Steering committee: Jenny Burrell, Brittany Campbell, Lisa Gendreau, Robin Grenz, Carolyn

Guzman, Diane Hasenbank , Susan Higley, Romina Jannotti, Melissa Nicholson, Dali Stires,

Marjanii Wilburn, Stephanie Young,

Rationale

1. Although the latest discipline data shows a small number of cheating incidents, many

teachers have expressed concern about the lack of academic integrity; and without involving

administration, they have also handled numerous academic dishonesty situations themselves.

2. Academic dishonesty affects student growth and progress. Because student achievement is

reflected in school grades, cheating has a negative impact on the high school itself and its

reputation.

3. Reinforcing academic integrity in a consistent manner insures that all students have a clear

understanding of the societal value, and helps students build a strong foundation for further

success.

Purpose

To foster an atmosphere of integrity by educating teachers, students, and parents about

performance expectations, and by generating consistency for consequences when academic

dishonesty occurs.

Composition

The Academic Integrity Steering Committee will consist of no more than 10 faculty volunteers

who will collaborate with administration and faculty to address academic integrity throughout

the school.

The Academic Integrity Team Review Board shall hear academic integrity violation appeals, and

shall consist of the appropriate dean, assistant principal, and three teachers who do not instruct

the student. Teachers who serve on the board to hear appeals shall earn compensatory time (60

minutes per appeal heard).

Functions

1. The Academic Integrity Team serves as an appellate body.

Page 2: Academic Integrity Team Plan and Procedures 2015 Steering ... · The administrator will schedule the Academic Integrity Team Review ... Provide an opportunity during preplan for teachers

2. The Honor Code policy and procedures outlined in the Student Code of Conduct will be

followed by administrators, teachers, coaches, and sponsors.

3. Appeals for the designated consequence will be made directly to the Academic Integrity

Team Review Board using the designated appeal process (attached).

4. Academic Integrity Team Review Board will review all evidence and make the final decision

regarding the academic integrity violation in accordance with the Honor Code matrix and the

SCPS Citizenship Standards for Participation (attached).

5. After hearing the student appeal, the Academic Integrity Review Board may conclude that a

violation has not occurred, and consequences are not necessary.

Administrative and Faculty Support

Faculty Support

1. Include definition of Academic Integrity on all syllabi, and conduct direct instruction on

cheating using the Academic Dishonesty Chart during the first week of school. Academic

Integrity poster and chart (with examples) will be posted in the classroom.

2. Hold all students accountable by always referring students for academic integrity violations.

3. Be specific with regard to expectations on the completion of assignments (i.e. address

collaboration, use of internet, etc.).

4. Reiterate academic integrity expectations either verbally or in writing for every assessment.

5. Uphold the process by responding to questions from parents and/or students using such

language as, “ I understand your concern regarding this issue. However, all academic

integrity violations are handled through administration and the Academic Integrity Team

Review Board. Please contact administration.”

6. At the teacher discretion, provide grade recovery opportunities for students for the first

offense of academic integrity; recovery opportunities for subsequent offenses are not given.

Administrative Support

Page 3: Academic Integrity Team Plan and Procedures 2015 Steering ... · The administrator will schedule the Academic Integrity Team Review ... Provide an opportunity during preplan for teachers

1. At the onset of the school year, provide at a faculty meeting a summary of the Academic

Integrity Plan and Procedures and provide a synopsis of previous referrals that include

examples of well documented incidents and outcomes.

2. Obtain Academic Integrity definition posters (attached) for each classroom.

3. During the first week of school, provide and collect a uniform Academic Integrity

acknowledgement (attached) for each student and respective parent to sign and return with

the emergency card via a selected class period.

4. Require academic integrity statement on each syllabi, and require direct instruction regarding

examples of violations in each class during the first week of school.

5. When students are referred for academic integrity violations, administration will follow the

code of conduct matrix for honor code violations including contacting parents, coaches, and

club sponsors.

If the violation and/or consequence is questioned, administration will explain the

appeal process (attached).

If a student initiates the appeal process by completing the appeal form within the

allotted time,

i. the administrator will send an email to the house assistant principal and

the Academic Integrity Team to elicit three members who will hear the

appeal.

ii. The administrator will schedule the Academic Integrity Team Review

Board meeting within one week of receiving the completed appeal form.

While attending Saturday School, as a consequence for academic integrity

violations, administration will require students to complete the integrity plan

(attached) and submit it with a parent signature no later than three days after

serving Saturday School.

6. Assist Academic Integrity Team in developing communication about academic integrity

and dishonesty for students and faculty (i.e. website, newsletter, student planner, open

house, and PTSA meetings).

7. Provide an opportunity during preplan for teachers to meet in departments to discuss the

ways in which students cheat and how to eliminate those opportunities (i.e. homework

audits, special marks on graded papers, etc.).

8. Provide a brief review of referrals received, including the type of academic violation and

grade level, at faculty meetings so that teachers can see the impact and follow-through.

according to the honor code matrix.

4. The student may appeal the consequence within 48 hours by completing and submitting the

appeal form with the required parent signature and documentation to administration.

5. Administration will assemble the Academic Integrity Team Review Board to include the

administrator who processed the referral, and three teachers who do not instruct the student.

a. Teachers who agree to serve on the appeals will earn compensatory time (60 minutes

per appeal).

6. Within one week of the submission of the completed appeal form, the student and parent will

appear before the board.

7. The administrative dean will conduct the meeting using the following procedure.

a. The administrative dean will state the purpose of the meeting.

b. The student will be given five minutes to present their explanation or case including any

has not violated academic integrity, and as a result will not be given consequences.

Will be provided a recovery assignment at the discretion of the teacher. Recovery assignments are assignments provided to students to alleviate the detrimental impact of a zero. The type of assignment and due date are decided by the teacher and communicated to the student in a timely fashion. Recovery assignments are available for the first offense only. A first offense shall be considered the initial referral of a student for an academic violation of any sort for any class.

Because the student has violated academic integrity more than once, a recovery assignment will not be provided.
