“BEFIRE!”By Graham N. Smith

It’ll beEaster be-fore mostfolks readthis, alwaysa time fornew be-g i n n i n g s .Good thing,too,becauseLent oftenleads me to

a fresh perspective on where Ineedanewbeginning.Here’sone:I’vebeenwaytoobusy.

There’s a wonderful oldhymn, “In the Garden”, abouttime alone with Jesus. Thechorus goes, “And He walkswithme, andHetalkswithme, andHetellsmeIamHisown. And the joy we share as wetarrythere, noneotherhaseverknown.”

That’s thekindof sweet fel-lowshipthattheLordwantsbutI’moftentoobusytoseek.Notgood. Time for a new begin-ning.

The Holy Spirit speaks in a

lotofways.I’vementionedthegift of prophecy, which is not“beingaprophet.”It’soneofthegiftsoftheHolySpiritthatweallreceived at baptism. That of-tenhappensinapiercinglyclearthought that cuts through the“backgroundnoise”ofmymind, orperhapsacitationtoaspecificBiblepassagecomes.Atprayermeetings, afteratimeofsingingand praising the Lord we taketime to listen for those thoughtsand we speak them aloud, be-causethey’reoftenmeant toen-couragetheentiregrouporsome-one in particular who’s there (1Cor. 14:3-4). That’s called a“prophetic word.” When thathappens, we “test” it (1 Thess.5:20-21) in a number of ways, including whether someone hasanother “word” that’s consistentwithit,orisdrawntoaBiblepas-sagethatlinesupwithit.That’s“confirming”the“word.”(ItalsohastolineupwithScriptureandtheteachingsofourChurch.)

Here’spartofa“word”thatIspoke when it came to mind ata recent prayer meeting: “Do Ihaveaseatatyourtable?DoIhaveapart inyourdiscussions?

Can I sharea jokewithyou,andyouwithme? Can I shareyourburdens?”

No one else at that meetinghadanythinglikethistoshare, oranyBibleverse thatsupported it.However,Ididn’tjusttossitasideascomingfrommyownmind,be-causetheHolySpiritoftenspeaksthroughothers.This“word”was“confirmed”formebysomethingapriestfriendhadtoldmeacou-pleofweeksearlier. So,thatprayermeeting“word”andthepriest’sstorylinedup,andIhavetotakethemseriously–toprayer.That“word”wasforme.

There’ve been other confirma-tionssincethen.Afriendremind-edmethatifIwanttoknowmoreabouttheLord’sdirectionformylife, I need to spend more timeinprayerlistening. Andtoday,I

There’s a pattern here thateven I can see: I’m too busy!ThatraisesarealdangerthatI’llbe doing things out of my ownstrengthandgifts, andnot lean-ingonJesus!

Timeforanewbeginning. The Lord has a sense of hu-

mor, too, that can really disarmme and get me back on track.Sometimes, He’ll give me theideatopickupaparticularbookandgotoaspecificpage.Today,I was trying to have some timeprayingbeforewritingthis, andIwasgettingdistractedbyalotofthingsthatwerecomingtomind.I wasn’t getting much done. Then, I felt I should pick up abookaboutJeremiah,“RunWiththe Horses.” Turned out therewasapieceofpaperstuckinit.Iopenedthebookthereandsawthisbold-facedheading:“GETASCROLLANDWRITE.”

With the launch of an improved diocesan website in early 2011, many were able to access special programs produced by the Lafayette Diocese’s Office of Radio/TV Min-istry. These programs include seasonal videos such as The Stations of the Cross, the recitation of the rosary in both English and French, and annual events such as the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass & Awards ceremony. File photo

This photo of the interior of St. Anthony Church in Krotz Springs was taken on Easter Sunday morning, 2011. St. Anthony’s suffered damage when Hurricane Gustav hit the area in September 2008, creating the need for repairs and remodeling that was thank-fully possible through insurance coverage and the continued support of St. Anthony’s dedicated parishioners throughout the renovation process. The implementation of the New Roman Missal went into effect with the start of the Ad-vent season in 2011, but diocesan preparations for the implementaion were underway well before that time. The Lafayette Diocese’s Office of Worship spearheaded many workshops for priests, deacons, and laity in order to help everyone prepare for this important transition. Photo by Deacon Tom Sommers

In June 2011, four new priests were ordained to serve the people of the Lafayette Dio-cese. Their journey up to this monumental day was made possible by the generous monetary contributions and outpouring of prayers and support from those very same people. Photo by P.C. Piazza

In October 2011, the diocese’s Office of Justice & Peace sponsored the 11th Annual Campaign Against Poverty workshop to help educate and encourage local individuals to become involved in efforts to help others in need. Photo submitted by the Office of Justice & Peace

Father Gandara offers thoughts on Pope’s trip to Mexico/Cuba:

St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Church in Abbeville is also home to a large con-centration of Hispanic Catholics. Re-cently, Father Gándara administered the sacrament of First Communion and the sacrament of Confirmation to two brothers in the González family. Pic-tured above from left to right are Kevin González, who received his First Com-munion; Father Juan Luis Gándara; and Uidemar González, who was confirmed. It was a happy day for the González family as their sons were able to receive the sac-raments of the Catholic Church. Pictured above from left to right are Alicia González (mother), Kevin González (who received his First Communion), Father Juan Luis-Gándara, Uidemar González (who was confirmed), and Enrique González (father). Visita de S.S. Benedicto XVI a México

Although Pope Benedict XVI did not visit the to United States during his recent trip, his visit to Mexico and Cuba meant a great deal to many in the Hispanic communities established throughout this country. Here in the Lafayette Diocese, Father Juan Luis Gándara, a native of Mexico, lends a hand in several church parishes where the His-panic population is concentrated. He assists these members of the Catholic Church in practicing their faith and preserving their native culture. The above picture was taken at St. Jules Church in Lafayette during a baptism. From left to right are Dora Ruiz (mother), Jaden Alexander Pu (child), Esteban Pu (father), Father Juan Luis Gándara, Fanny Rodríguez (godmother), and Ivan Mejía (godfather). Diocesan representatives continue efforts to repeal death penalty

This billboard, erected across from a graveyard in the city of New Iberia, expresses a strong stance on three very important life issues that are often at the center of much debate in today’s society. The billboard is sponsored by St. Peter Church in New Iberia and serves as a constant visual reminder of the Catholic Church’s moral teachings on each of these issues. Photo submitted by the Office of Pro-Life Apostolate

Prayer to end the use of the death penaltyMerciful Father, we ask your blessing on all we do to build a culture of life. Hear

our prayers for those impacted by the death penalty. We pray for all people, that their lives and dignity as children of a loving God may

be respected and protected in all stages and circumstances. We pray for victims of violence and their families, that they may experience our love

and support and find comfort in your compassion and in the promise of eternal life.We pray for those on death row, that their lives may be spared, that the innocent may

be freed and that the guilty may come to acknowledge their faults and seek reconcili-ation with you.

We pray for the families of those who are facing execution, that they may be com-forted by your love and compassion.

We pray for civic leaders, that they may commit themselves to respecting every hu-man life and ending the use of the death penalty in our land.

Compassionate Father, give us wisdom and hearts filled with your love. Guide us as we work to end the use of the death penalty and to build a society that truly chooses life in all situations.

We ask this Father through your Son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

The authenticity of ancientBiblical texts was discussed byFatherPaulLaFleurattheMarch6programofFoodfor theJour-ney. Father LaFleur, Pastor ofSt. Bernard Church in BreauxBridge, reviewed a number ofscripture texts and the contribu-tionsoftheearlyChurchfathers.He cited the difficulties deter-mining the authenticity of suchtextsastheGospelofJudas(thetraitor),or theGospel accordingto Mary Magdalen. They haveknownabouttheGospelofJudassincethesecondcentury,butthetextwasnotdiscovereduntilthe1970’sinEgypt.

TheGospelofJudasdoesnotspeak of the divinity of Christ;it ends with Judas’ betrayal. Many of these early “Gospels”werewrittenbygnostics,whosestrangecoreofbeliefsweresin-ful; to preserve oneself, for in-stance, suicide was suggested.Theearlybishopsof theChurchhadtocontendwiththis.Amongthese was St. Iraeneus of Lyon

Father LaFleur talks about ancient textswho defended traditional teach-ings.AnotherwasSt.IgnatiusofAntioch,whowrotesevenletterstothesevenmajorchurchesofthetime.Inthem,heusedtheword“Catholic” for the first time; St.Paulhaddescribed earlybeliev-ersas“Christians.”

Four hundred years afterChrist, the books of the Biblewere decided by the bishops atoneof theearlycouncils. EarlyChristians looked to thepope inRome for guidance in the truefaith. Read about the “ChurchFathers” before 300 and simi-lar bookswhich are available atCatholicbookstores.St.Justininthe second century wrote abouttheEucharist, describingitastheBodyandBloodofChrist.

In conclusion, Father LaFleurnoted it is useful to become ac-quainted with early church his-
