Unit 505 Board of DirectorsUnit 505 Board of Directors

As I write this, the Sacramento Regional is just about to begin but by the time this gets published, Saturday and Sunday is all that's left. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't participate - call your friends, come down to the Double Tree and join us for some fun.

I confess I especially enjoy Sunday Swiss events - maybe because I earned my first gold points in a Sunday Swiss several years ago in Monterey. We took some lumps in the first three days we played - won a couple red points but no gold. But learning in bridge is usually the hard way so my partner, Al Farrar, and I discussed and fixed a couple problems. Because I was down there with only Al and you need four to play Swiss, we headed to the partnership desk and found a charming, elderly couple who had over 1600 points each - vastly more than me and Al. But they played lights out and Al & I had learned from our mistakes so we finished second out of thirty five teams. In closing I would like to add a little plug for Gerry Fox. Gerry teaches about once a month at Folsom Bridge Club as a favor because he plays there when his schedule permits on Saturdays. Gerry has been teaching for over 35 years mostly in the Bay Area and on cruise ships. He is an Emerald Life Master. The marvelous thing about Gerry is that he helps you understand WHY you should do what he recommends. To me, just following the rules leaves you a mechanical bridge player but understanding WHY helps you understand the thought process behind the game and makes you an overall better player. Recently, Gerry taught the Rule of 7 (holdups in No Trump) which I had seen before so I knew the rule... But I didn't know why I should do it - now I do. Susan Haynie, who is the club manager at Folsom, always sends an email when Gerry teaches. So please come see Gerry when he teaches, he is so worth the time!!
