Today’s modern computing environment is in constant flux. Cloud adoption is accelerating as organizations increasingly utilize off-premise services to reduce operating costs and meet business demands of their business. Digital transformation and evolving security requirements are forcing companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft to update and patch their operating systems at a pace never seen before. Device manufacturers ranging from Samsung and Lenovo to smaller boutique vendors like Zebra and Sonim are constantly updating firmware and releasing new versions of their hardware. MobileIron allows organizations to secure, scale, and simplify the management of these modern operating systems and mobile devices. MobileIron customers utilize our products and solutions to secure and manage their modern computing environment as the industry goes through rapid evolution, and MobileIron is committed to providing customers deployment options which meet their needs.

Many MobileIron customers initially purchased our unified endpoint management (UEM) solution for on-premise deployment. They rely on their internal IT, security, and infrastructure teams to manage their MobileIron Core and Sentry infrastructure servers. These deployments carry additional overhead costs such as hardware management, datacenter costs, IT management, and support. As a result, IT admins spend most of their time trying to keep an on-premises infrastructure current and available, as opposed to investing in new features and capabilities to drive value inside their organizations. Without a reliable infrastructure, the customer experience may also suffer.

Introduction: UEM and the Cloud

This whitepaper will detail the benefits, cost, and ROI associated with moving from on-premises Core to MobileIron Cloud, and to help customers understand if the move is right for them.

MobileIron Cloud, the cloud services version of MobileIron’s UEM , which serves as the baseline for MobileIron’s mobile-centric zero trust platform, was launched in 2011 specifically to address the SaaS deployment model. Unlike other solutions that “forklifted” on-prem solutions to the cloud, MobileIron’s ground-up approach created a solution that was designed and built to optimize the cloud. This approach gave MobileIron the advantage of a robust, scalable, and easy to update infrastructure that is unparalleled in the industry. Since our launch, thousands of customers have increasingly taken advantage of MobileIron Cloud, and MobileIron currently manages millions of devices on our cloud services platform.

MobileIron is committed to providing software to customers in the manner and deployment style they wish to consume, whether in the cloud or on-prem. For customers who are able to leverage SaaS technology, the various business and technical benefits to MobileIron Cloud are detailed below.

Feature Velocity

On average, MobileIron launches a new release of MobileIron Cloud on average every six weeks, resulting in approximately nine version releases every year. MobileIron does extensive testing of releases and has a facility for customers to preview releases. In this sandbox environment, customers can test and validate new releases and features before upgrades are rolled out. Since millions of end-user devices simultaneously depend on the MobileIron Cloud infrastructure, significant care is taken to ensure smooth release deployment and consistent upgrades.

Automated Patching

Patching software, and keeping up with the latest releases, is one of the most difficult things for most enterprises to do. In 2018, the operating systems supported by MobileIron experienced frequent releases. Apple’s iOS had 12 releases, and the six6 primary versions of Android each were frequently customized and upgraded by OEMs including Samsung, Nokia, Sony, LG,. HTC, Motorola, Sonim, and Zebra frequently. Windows 10 had over 120 releases in 2018, and macOS also delivered 10 releases. As MobileIron manages all of the devices in this constantly changing industryinfrastructure, including releasing new capabilities of ourits own, frequent software updates to the software are required. In 2018, MobileIron released three3 major versions of our Core on-prem platform and 15 separate patches. When new vulnerabilities emerge, or if we face a mission-critical issue which needs to be corrected, MobileIron has processes to patch the production infrastructure. The patch process is highly supervised, controlled, and frequently tested for quality assurance, highly supervised, and controlled. In the rare case where a severity one security issue or defect is found, the issue is quickly addressed for all impacted customers.

Note: Due to the mission-critical nature of MobileIron’s technology, it is MobileIron’s policy to avoid patching unless absolutely necessary. Updates and corrections typically happen as part of the standard release process.

There are currently millions, if not billions, of mobile devices used in business globally. MobileIron built its cloud infrastructure from the ground up with this type of capacity in mind. Millions of end-user devices currently rely on MobileIron’s cloud infrastructure for management and security, and the systems are designed to easily handle thousands of additional devices daily.

Additionally, MobileIron Cloud leverages the Amazon AWS CloudFront CDN for App Distribution and delivery for in-house apps. The MobileIron Cloud infrastructure leverages the CloudFront Content Delivery Network to securely replicate assets like applications across multiple global data centers and MobileIron Cloud will deliver the application from a data center closest to the end user. It's also streams the app from one of the world’s fastest networks. The result is dramatically faster app-downloads for all customers using MobileIron Cloud.

Scalability and Capacity

In on-prem scenarios, integrations between platforms often depend on connectivity between platforms, authentication, version control, and custom code. In a SaaS environment, many of these components are owned and managed by the service provider, which significantly reduces the effort required to get value out of these integrations.

Details of integrations available on MobileIron Cloud can be found in the MobileIron Marketplace.

Integrations

6

High Availability and Redundancy

MobileIron has been hosting MobileIron Cloud in AWS for several years and has consistently demonstrated our ability to host the environment in a high-uptime and secure manner.

MobileIron Cloud leverages Amazon's Availability Zones to replicate the Cloud infrastructure (in a secure, GDPR-compliant way) across multiple data centers. In the event of an outage at the primary data center where your MobileIron Cloud tenant is hosted, services that are replicated across multiple Amazon data centers can support the request without the cluster incurring any downtime.

Customers replicating this level of redundancy with an on-prem UEM deployment have to invest significant time, effort, and resources in building the infrastructure and maintaining it during upgrades and data center changes. By switching to MobileIron Cloud, customers save considerable time and effort by eliminating these maintenance requirements. For customers who want more detail about the history of the service, availability, and any past issues please visit: https://status.mobileiron.com.

Support Experience

Customer support is much simpler in a cloud environment than in an on-premises

environment. This is because the state of the environment and configuration is always known to MobileIron. Issues are easier to reproduce, and test, and fixes can be validated before deploying them in a release.

IT Staffing

A cloud model helps customers reduce the risks associated with IT staffing and turnover because fewer IT resources are needed to maintain the system. Additionally, external consultants or contractors can quickly supplement changes to your IT organization.

MobileIron Cloud ROI Tool

For many customers, especially those who are security-conscious and prompt about updating their on-premises software, migrating from Core to MobileIron Cloud can save significant hosting expense and internal IT time. MobileIron has found that in many cases, the internal costs associated with hosting and upgrading can be up to two times the annual cost of software licenses.

MobileIron has developed an ROI calculator to help customers quantify their current total cost of ownership associated with their on-prem deployments. This tool can also quantify the return on investment associated with a move to MobileIron Cloud. Customers should contact their MobileIron account rep for more details.

Migration Options

Customers who want to move from MobileIron Core to MobileIron Cloud have three primary ways to execute a transition.

1. Organic Migration

2. Third Party Migration Service which automates device re-registration

3. MobileIron’s Low User Impact migration service

While each option has certain advantages, for most customers speed and minimal end-user impact are critical for a successful initiative.

Organic Migration:This involves setting up MobileIron Core and MobileIron Cloud in parallel and moving devices over either through manual re-registration, or following the organization's natural device refresh cycle.

Pro: Relatively easy to setup and execute. Con: Involves running parallel environments for an extended period of time. Typically too slow, or too labor intensive, for larger organizations.

Third Party Migration Tools:Tools which automate key steps of device un-enrollment and re-enrollment.

Pro: Relatively easy to setup and execute. Con: Requires significant interaction by end users who have to un-enroll and re-enroll their devices and accept new MDM certificates. Also has significant limitations for devices enrolled in Apple’s Device Enrollment Program.

MobileIron Low User Impact Migration:This service is offered by MobileIron Professional Services and enables devices to be moved from MobileIron Core to MobileIron Cloud without re-registration and with minimal end-user impact.

Pro: Almost zero end-user impact enables full business continuity during a migration. Con: Requires a professional services engagement and a bit more IT time to align systems and setup the migration tools.
