AccelerAting BiBle trAnslAtion through technology

Dear Coworker in Christ,Newspapers and broadcasts emit a daily supply of gloom. But God in his Word has prescribed an antidote—praise and thanks-giving. And we have a cupful of praise-worthy items to share with you,“pressed down, shaken together, and running over.”

This year’s progress report overflows with more good news than could fit within these pages. So we have included links to online video clips and stories. If you have a Smartphone or similar handheld device you can even scan the code and view these items directly.

We relish the news that the pace of Bible translation is increasing. Statistics released by Wycliffe International reveal that, in the last year, the number of languages still waiting for a Bible translation to begin has dropped from 2,252 to 2,078!

How sweet is the realization that you and I have had a part in this movement. Together with our partners, JAARS has been engaged in accelerating Bible translation for more than sixty years. And now God is giving us a taste of the ripening harvest.

Technology at the Ends of the EarthGod is giving us a taste of the

ripening harvest.With appropriate technology tools mtts can reach

translation consultants much more easily. And each consultant can assist many more language projects.

Four initial pilot projects were successful, a number of new deployments were accomplished in 2010, and at least 68 more are planned. With the right technology many language groups around the world could have God’s Word much sooner.

And that’s very good news indeed!

10/40The company helps local teams create resource-

packed websites that are uniquely tailored to each community’s language and culture. And every site will be accessible by computers, mo bile phones, and other communication devices.

JAARS is supporting this growing media com pany by providing funds for equipment, software development, and communica tion needs.

As a result, the team will better under stand the intricacies and impact of digital publishing in the 10/40 Window—and be poised to provide Scripture to millions who, otherwise, may never hear God’s Word in their own language.

Some countries in Asia, particularly in the “10/40 Window,” prohibit the sale and distribution of Scripture-based materials. But now, almost everywhere in the region, people are buying and using cell phones and other handheld communication devices. These popular items and the ever-expanding Internet enable Scripture materials to be shared easily and discreetly.

To use this swiftly growing avenue, a digital publishing service has been formed with the goal of making Scripture and related materials available online or for downloading to mobile phones, mp3 and mp4 players, and pdas. God’s Word can now go where access has been almost impossible.

We thank God that because of advances in communication tools, translation is now possible in remote locations where, previously, it was neither feasible nor sustainable.

For just over a year the JAARS it global engineering group has been part of a collaborative partnership with The Seed Company and Wycliffe Associates to provide technology solutions for mother-tongue translators (mtts).

The goal is to provide mtts with low-powered computers, translation software (such as OurWord and paratext), a power source, and Internet connectivity. Then, from his home in the village, the translator can upload drafts via e-mail over the Internet, communicate with consultants, and get computer help via remote control or text chat methods.

Like bookends to the fiscal year, these two Kodiak airplanes were provided for Papua New Guinea; Kodiak #008 arrived there in September 2009, and #038 in November 2010.

KodiaksThe first Kodiak, #008, has already proven its value in supporting Bible translation. It recently transported people to and from several New Testament dedications, including the Yopno celebration. At that location the people had spent years carving a runway out of the mountainside to facilitate their connection with the outside world. Now they have connected with God’s transforming Word, too!

Kodiak #038 arrived at Ukarumpa, papua New Guinea, on November 19, 2010. people across the world followed its flight there through the JAARS website. Onboard were dozens of “passengers,” each named “Flat Stanley.” These travelers were made of paper, decorated, and sent by children in America to encourage Bible translators. Students plotted Flat Stanley’s travels on a map and wrote about his adventures, in a journal, as a school project.

survey for the Australian Society of Indigenous Languages (AuSIL) in Northern Australia and the Timor region.

Surveys resulted in the recommendation of a boat service for Scripture distribution and promotion among the islands of the Torres Strait in northern Queensland. Further recommendations were for two new aviation programs. One in Darwin, Australia would support translation and Scripture promotion in the vast northern region of the continent. The second program would support a cooperative relationship between YAJASI and the national evangelical church.

yAJAsiOur aviation partner continues to expand its ability to support Bible translation in Southeast Asia, building a new hangar in partnership with Wycliffe Associates. Through JAARS training, another Indonesian will soon be serving as a YAJASI pilot. And a third pilatus pC6 airplane joined two other pC6s and a pC12 already in service.

These four aircraft have flown more than 8,000 hours without incident in one of the world’s most challenging flying environments. They have flown to 162 different locations and carried 40,000 passengers and 3,140,000 kilograms of cargo, including freshly completed New Testament translations for five people groups. The pilots performed over 200 medivacs, saving the lives of critically ill members of isolated communities.

Beyond providing flight service for Bible translators and other Scripture engagement workers, YAJASI has been able to use these highly efficient new aircraft to generate income to help subsidize the travel needs of these ministries.

PNg ViSiON tRiPIn August 2010, JAARS hosted its first vision trip for people interested in pursuing mission aviation. Four young men from LeTourneau University, two of their wives, and one recent high school graduate participated in the two-week adventure in Ukarumpa, papua New Guinea.

After fifty-two years of operations, the need for aviation services in Nasuli and Bagabag has ended. Over the years, thirty-two pilot-mechanics, eleven

expatriate maintenance specialists, and sixteen aviation program directors served there.

Nine different aircraft were flown, and the department received

twenty-five aviation safety plaques from JAARS, beginning in 1975.

Al and Barbara Shannon served forty-seven years in Peru, the last ten years training Peruvians in the production of media in local languages. Al returns periodi-cally to encourage those who carry on this work.

Africasharing technologyYears ago in Brazil, pilot mike Navratil often flew in support of Kayapo Bible conferences, led bi-annually by Earl Trapp, a CrossWorld missionary and co-translator of the Kayapo New Testament.

Recently Earl wrote, “One of our former JAARS pilots, mike Navratil, found an apparatus that would transform our cassette tape messages into digital form so they might be played on a computer or burned to a cd. We spent much time on the phone [arranging this].

“Since then I have prepared 160 cds and 300 tapes containing teaching. Included are nearly 80 new Scripture songs composed by the Kayapo themselves.

“Two thirds of the student body have access to cd players and almost all Kayapo ‘men’s houses’ have tvs with cd-dvd players. This is the most public place of the communities. pray that many will be saved, others restored, and the believers edified.”

partnership in AsiaThe JAARS and Asia Area information technology (it) teams have been rolling out it in the form of a help desk and local hands-on training. A JAARS it specialist is leading the development of the Asia it team, sharing solutions to the it challenges faced in Asia.

A JAARS wireless engineering specialist recently traveled to the philippines to help the Ayta translation team install satellite-based Internet connection equipment. As part of a much larger program, this technology is hoped to provide connectedness to many more locations in Asia.

AsiaAmericasWith non-print media expanding rapidly, we are

happy to have two new media hubs being developed in Chaing mai, Thailand, and Davao, philippines. JAARS and Asia Area media services are working closely together; one person serves both in a leadership role.

partnership with Faith Comes By Hearing has resulted in several New Testament audio recordings. The Winter 2010 issue of Rev. 7 shows how hearing God’s Word opens hearts to Christ and inspires local people to develop their own biblical media.

aCCElERatiON iN tHE amERiCaSIn Latin America many functioning partnerships exist and mother-tongue translators have formed new organizations to further their own translation needs. The first Brazilian Forum on the Use of Scripture in Indigenous Languages took place in Anápolis, Brazil, August 29– September 3, 2010. The 218 participants included representatives of 59 ethnic groups and 32 mission organizations.

A RepoRt fRom the fieldour visit to Ayacucho was to see about airing Quechua recorded Scriptures on the radio. Renting radio time had been too expensive in the past.

this time a friend introduced me to the administrator of a new Christian radio station, who told me he lacked program material, especially in Quechua. thrilled to learn the New testament has been recorded in dramatized format, the man promised to air Quechua programming daily—free of charge.

i told him we had trained Quechua Christians all over peru to produce professional programs that would impact their people for Christ—except here in Ayacucho. he then said, “i can get some men; when can you train them?” during the last three days of our stay, we trained twelve Quechua pastors and church leaders. God in his timing works everything for good.

meanwhile, we attended the opening of a new Quechua Bible institute at a church about two hours over the mountains, in an area where we had helped start a bilingual school and an agricultural project some forty years ago. What a joy to find that one of the institute’s leaders was the first believer in that area; we had worked together in his village. he told us that now most of the people are Christians! God has been doing great things in Ayacucho, and it was a thrill to see it.

it connect in AfricaTo sustain Bible translation projects, local people must be involved–people who are part of the culture, who aren’t going to leave. Toward this end, it Connect was established as an ongoing training program.

The first session, held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2010, was a two-week

course attended by eleven students and five teachers. Students came from Ethiopia,

Kenya, mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. In

2011, it Connect will be held in Cameroon

and Burkina Faso.This information

and apply these concepts in their work, with a mentor to hold them

accountable to goals set during the conference.Aviation highlights• In may 2010, the Helio float plane program in porto

Velho, Brazil, was turned over to Asas de Socorro, an aviation partner. An Asas pilot will now head the float plane program.

• A second Cessna replaced an aging Helio that had flown many years in peru.

• In August, aviation safety personnel from JAARS and mission Safety International converged in Brazil for safety audits and seminars. personnel from SIL aviation and Asas de Socorro benefitted.

• JAARS provided pilots and maintenance personnel to assist earthquake relief operations in Haiti, in cooperation with Samaritan’s purse.

Mission KoreaIn August 2010, some 3,000 students from several Asian countries attended the mission Korea conference. Chuck Daly and Dan Zachary represented JAARS, talking with students about the need for technical support workers.

Business As Mission (BAM)The bam team held its first-ever workshop in October 2009, at the JAARS Center. more than 20 participants attended from ten countries.

A bam solution is being considered to create a sustainable water transportation system in the Solomon Islands. The proposed boats will serve translators in the area while creating jobs for local people and income for the local Bible translation movement.

Last year the bam team performed an assessment for both the Bible Translation Association (bta) and Bougainville Bible Translators Fellowship in papua New Guinea, to help them seek new avenues for income. Early in 2011 bam plans to aid bta, through training, to create a business that will help them achieve greater sustainability of their programs.

global Programs FundAll JAARS-sponsored field projects were fully funded for the 2010 fiscal year! Generous giving by our partners enabled JAARS to meet this year’s commitment to fund field projects providing computers, software, Internet access, technical support, aircraft, vehicles, water safety training and equipment, media production, and more.

trainingJAARS also provided personnel, both short-term and long-term, for information technology, transportation, and training in leadership development. Training took place on location, as well as at the JAARS Center, for those who will serve Bible translation through avionics, transportation, it, leadership, and business as mission.

WordsignIn 2009 JAARS launched the WordSign project to help develop high-quality, cost-effective media in signed languages. Development and testing of the sign language video-motion-capture software is underway, and the first trial version of this computer-aided animation technology will soon undergo initial field testing in Spain.
