LESSON OVERVIEW
In this lesson, learners will be introduced to Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is the
development of computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human
intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation
between languages. This lesson focuses on “teaching” through coding a computer inside a
robot. The robot with “learn” about visual perception and translation to aid the exploration of a
new planet. Students will complete a series of exercises with the robot to equip it with the skills
to differentiate among different life forms and independently explore.
This lesson has been design for learners between the ages of 8 and 14.
LESSON OBJECTIVES
Students will learn:
• The definition of artificial intelligence
• The techniques used to create artificial intelligence
• How artificial intelligence can be applied
PREPARATION
One Week Before Your Hour of Code
• Review the Hour of Code Educator Guide and Best Practices from Successful Educators to
plan your Hour of Code event.
• Register your Hour of Code event if you’d like to receive swag or classroom support.
• Complete tutorial before you ask your students to try it. Make sure your technology is
working and troubleshoot any issues.
One Day Before Your Hour of Code
• Each student who completes the activity should receive a certificate. Print one for everyone
so that you can hand it out at the end of your Hour of Code.
GETTING STARTED (5 MINUTES)
• Welcome students to class and briefly introduce the day’s activity.
• Ask students if they have heard of Artificial Intelligence and what it means. Students might
mention that a “Artificial Intelligence” is a smart robot.
• Explain that Artificial Intelligence means that we can make a computer behave in smart
ways. Teaching a computer is like how people learn. For instance, when you hit your head
against a wall, you feel pain so you will avoid hitting the wall again. You learn language by
listening to a lot of people speak. That means you often need examples to learn. This is
similar for the computers. Today students will learn how to teach computers to make them
intelligent like humans. As we teach the computer, we are creating code that supports this
intelligence.
• You’ll want to spend very little time introducing your Hour of Code, it’s best to start the
tutorial as quickly as possible. Too much talking at the beginning tends to spoil the fun, and
fun is the whole point!
ACTIVITY (30-45 MINUTES)
• Challenge your students to complete the artificial intelligence tutorial.
• For younger students, we suggest you break your class into pairs and ask each group to
work together to complete the tutorial. Make sure they know to look for the HINT buttons to
help them through the tutorial.
• For learners in the middle grades, we find that working independently on tutorials works
well. Sometimes it helps to allow students to choose their own tutorial. If students aren’t
interested in artificial intelligence, they can get a more computer science-focused
experience with the Code with Anna and Elsa or Star Wars tutorials.
• For older or adult learners, the artificial intelligence tutorial works well as an independent
activity.
• If a group or individual finishes early, they can attempt another tutorial by visiting
code.org/learn.
• Helpful hints:
o Click on the HINT button if you get stuck or don’t know what to do next.
o You may need to scroll your screen down or to the right to see more of the planet to
navigate to. The entire “playing field” may not be visible at the beginning of each
level.
o If you get a question wrong, read and click the other option.
o Look for the red arrow to navigate to in order to complete each stage.
WRAP UP (5 MINUTES)
• Ask students to reflect on the day’s activities. What did they learn about Artificial Intelligent?
How do they feel about teaching their computers to be smart?
• Explain that you are spending one hour learning to build Intelligent machines today,
because this week is CS Education Week, and millions of other students across the globe
have also been learning one Hour of Code this week. Congratulate students on being part of
this world-wide movement.
• Give each student a certificate with his or her name on it.
• Let students know that if they enjoyed today’s activity, they have many options for
continuing to learn more about teaching computers. Encourage students to visit
code.org/learn for a list of options, or, if you’re planning any of the extension activities that
follow, tell students what’s coming next in your classroom.
• Give students a piece of paper and ask them to summarize what they learned today, how
they felt, or what they experienced. Students can draw, write or express themselves in any
way they feel comfortable. Collect these papers from each student on their way out of the
room. If you like, you can post them on a bulletin board or someplace prominent in the
school as a reminder of your Hour of Code.
EXTENDED LEARNING
After your Hour of Code ends, there are many ways to learn more about how to learn computer
science. Here are some ideas:
• Teach the Code Studio Computer Science Fundamentals courses. These four courses are
designed for young learners. Students work their way through a series of puzzles that teach
them to code, and educators have access to engaging lesson plans that help make the
learning coming alive. Code.org offers free professional development for these courses,
online or in-person.
• Invite a computer science expert to talk to your class about his or her work. Don’t know any
local computer scientists? Reach out to a volunteer on our volunteer map
VOCABULARY
• Data Preparation (Level 1): Data preparation is the first step to creating many artificial
intelligence techniques. Machine learning algorithms learn from data and the data must be
ready for the machine to understand. It is critical that you feed them the right data for the
problem you want to solve. Even if you have good data, you need to make sure that there is
enough data, the format is correct and meaningful features are included.
• Unsupervised Learning (Level 2 & 3): Unsupervised learning is a way that computers can
get smarter by analyzing and detecting patterns from a data set. When no prior pattern or
structure of the dataset is known, we call this process ‘unsupervised’. For example, an
algorithm can learn to distinguish cats from dogs by grouping images based on shared
features. By asking the algorithm to divide the pictures into two groups, it will hopefully learn
to ignore the background and focus on the differences between the animals in the pictures.
It might pick up on the fact that cats have longer whiskers than dogs, or it might find some
other defining features. The goal of unsupervised learning is to discover groups in data.
Once you have identified a group, the algorithm can assign new images it sees to that
group. For instance, an online shopping algorithm can analyze your purchases and predict
products you may be interested in.
• Supervised Learning (Level 5 & 6): Supervised learning is a way computers can get smarter
by identifying groups within a data set based on training examples provided by a
“supervisor”. Because the algorithm already knows a pattern from the training examples, the
learning is steered in the right direction, hence the name ‘supervised’. Returning to the Dog
and Cat example above, if the images of cats and dogs that the algorithm was clustering
were tagged according to their respective species, then it would be an example of
‘supervised’ learning. The algorithm is trained by providing many cat or dog pictures with a
tag of the species. The goal of supervised learning is to analyze unstructured data based on
a predetermined pattern. This technology can be useful for instance to identify spam in
emails, faces in a picture, the topic of news articles and if a money transaction is suspicious
and should be blocked.
• Reinforcement Learning (Level 4): Reinforcement learning is a type of learning where
algorithms learn the optimal behavior through trial and error, influenced by programmed risk
and reward. Reinforcement Learning is very like how humans learn. If you bump into a wall,
it hurts (reinforcement), so you avoid that situation. If you do well on a test and your
parents/teachers reward you, you will strive to repeat that behavior in the future. Initially the
algorithm has no idea which patterns are good or bad, but it can learn the difference by
trying out different moves until it learns which moves lead to a win. Reinforcement
algorithms can learn the optimal way to play a game and thereby outperform human players
by far.
• Optical Character Recognition (Level 7): Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a
technique that allows computers to read handwritten text from images or PDF documents.
OCR uses the pixel inputs of a picture as data for an algorithm that decides which word or
letter the picture corresponds to. This technique has been used for years by postal services
worldwide to automatically sort letters and packages by automatically reading the
handwritten address with a computer.
• Speech Recognition (Level 8): Speech recognition is the technology that records a spoken
sentence and translates that into digital text. It enables us to talk to our mobile and home
digital assistants, like Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. A speech recognition system consists
of two algorithms: a language model and an acoustic model. Both algorithms are trained on
a lot of example data, but the acoustic model learns how to differentiate the sounds we
make and the language model learns how these sounds should be interpreted to form a
grammatical piece of text.
• Natural Language Processing (grammar) (Level 9): Natural Language Processing (NLP) is
an area of research that teaches computers how to communicate in natural languages such
as English, French, or Chinese. This requires computers to understand incoming text or
speech, as well as being able to form grammatical sentences in return. An important aspect
of language is grammar (the structure of a language): how are words ordered within a
sentence and how do words change shape to provide meaning. Understanding the grammar
of a language is essential in learning how to speak fluently, but almost nobody speaks a
language exactly how it is described in the grammar guides. Therefore, it is important that
algorithms learn from real examples of language use instead of programming the grammar
rules directly into the computer.
• Automation and Robotics (Level 10): Robotics automations are a type of software that
replicates the actions of people controlling computer systems to run business processes.
The software copies people by doing activities like logging into a system, entering data,
clicking on ‘OK’, copying and pasting data between systems, etc. This software relies on
artificial intelligence methods such as computer vision and character recognition.

terminer chaque niveau.
CONCLUSION (5 MINUTES)
ESPLORAZIONE SPAZIALE INTELLIGENTE CON
ACCENTURE
ITALIANO
• La definizione di Intelligenza Artificiale;
• Le tecniche usate per creare Intelligenza Artificiale;
• Come l’Intelligenza Artificiale può essere applicata.
PREPARAZIONE
computer a comportarsi in maniera intelligente.
fondamentale!
sull’informatica con tutorial come Code with Anna and Elsa o Star Wars.
funziona ‘perfettamente come attività individuale.
tutorial visitando code.org/learn.
• Suggerimenti utili:
visibile all’inizio di ciascun livello.
WRAP UP (5 MINUTI)
esprimersi come preferiscono. Raccogli i fogli: se vuoi, puoi appenderli in classe come
ricordo di Hour of Code.
APPROFONDIMENTI
• Segui i corsi Code Studio Computer Science Fundamentals.
umano. Se vai a sbattere contro un muro, ti fai male (rinforzo), quindi eviterai in futuro quella
situazione.
regole grammaticali.
• Automatizzazione robotizzata (Livello 10): L’automatizzazione robotizzata comprende quei

slimme robot is.
over Kunstmatige Intelligentie.
nu schrijven, tekenen of iets anders is. Verzamel de papieren van elke leerling. Indien gewenst
In eerste instantie
grammaticaal correct stuk tekst.
Hiervoor moeten computers zowel
binnenkomende teksten kunnen interpreteren alswel kloppende antwoorden kunnen
formuleren.
