mouth a rose slipped and leaved argent.
This device is a resubmission of the February 2014 Laurel return "Azure, a fleur-de-lis and in base two
rapiers in saltire argent." This device was returned for redraw, for violating SENA A2C1 which requires
that Elements must be drawn in their period forms and in a period armorial style. The rapiers here are
depicted as modern cup-hilted fencing foils, not period rapiers. While cup-hilts did exist in period, they
were always paired with quillions and a knucklebow."
Pippo del Monte - New Name & New Device
Or, a stag statant at gaze contourny and in base a tree blasted sable within a bordure sable semy of
Latin crosses clechy Or.
Rat le Bastard – Resub Name
This is a resubmission of the February 2014 Laurel return of the name Rat Bastard This name is returned for obtrusive modernity. SENA PN.2.E states:
No name will be registered that either in whole or in part is obtrusively modern. Something is said to be obtrusively modern when it makes a modern joke or reference that destroys medieval ambience and drags the average person mentally back to the present day. Obtrusiveness can be either in the written form or when spoken. A period name that has a modern referent will not generally be considered obtrusively modern. Only extreme examples will be returned. The majority of commenters and attendees of the decision meeting thought that this name reaches this standard because the term rat bastard is a modern epithet, associated, for example with gangster movies. We are inclined to agree, and are returning this name. We note that a name like Rat le Bastard would not sound as jarringly modern and would be probably be registerable.
Santiago Xavier - New Name & New Device
Vert, a bull's head cabossed and on a chief argent two cocks close respectant gules.
Seamus de Mantel - New Name (See Returns for Device)
Séamus Fletcher - New Device
Per pale indented sable and Or, three skulls in pale Or and a snake erect, tail knowed, sable maintaining
in its mouth an arrow gules.
The device is a resubmission of the same blazon; first from an in-kingdom return in December 2013
because the name was listed as being returned for reworking by Atlantia in May, 2013. "For lack of a
registerable name, the device was returned, but it would have had to been returned in any case for
violation of our `slot machine' rule. The blazon has the snake and arrow co-primary. The arrow was big
enough to be primary if the snake is not present, and likewise the snake, so along with the arrangement
of the skulls we had a charge group with more than two types of a "charge." Reducing the size of the
snake or of the arrow to a `maintained' size would alleviate this." The next submission was returned by
Atlantia in March, 2014 so the posture of the snake could be changed to something blazonable.
Sigurðr Roðreksson - New Name
Sinn Larensdotter - New Device
Per fess sable and argent, a sun within six mullets in annulo counterchanged.
This is a resubmission after the January 2014 Atlantia return of "Per fess argent and sable, a sun
between six mullets of eight points counterchanged", "It is with true regret that we must return this
distinctive and lovely device as being unregisterable. By current precedent there is no distinct change
between a sun and a mullet of eight points so this falls under the "sword and dagger" rubrics."

Returns
Antonius Renaldo da Castello – New Device
Gules, a chevron sable fimbriated and in base three arrows palewise inverted Or.
Unfortunately, this device must be returned for conflict. It is in conflict with Amaranth Wolfsbane,
registered through the Middle in September, 1996 ("Gules, on a chevron between two Latin crosses
bottony and a demi-sun issuant from base Or, a chevron sable."). There is only one distinct change for
changing a sun to arrows. There isn’t a second distinct change for arrangement because the arrows are
in a non-standard arrangement. In order for a device to be registered it must have two distinct changes
from any other registered device. It was suggested that the submitted could clear the conflict by putting
the arrows in a sheaf.
Ciarán Meictire - New Name & New Device
Sable, in pale a wolf rampant and a sword and arrow in saltire, argent.
Name and Device was withdrawn by the submitter.
Francisco de Espinosa New Device
Per bend sinister sable and Or, a boot and a wolf's head erased counterchanged.
Sadly, this device must be returned because the erasure on the wolf's head which does not match
standard forms of erasing in real world armory or Society precedent:
"Erased necks were marked by prominent jags. By far the most common number of jags found in the
sources, regardless of national origin, was three. However, as many as eight jags were found with some
frequency by the end of period. It should be noted that the number of jags does not appear to be the
critical factor, but rather the prominence of the jags. The jags generally appear to be approximately one-
sixth to one-third of the height of the entire erased head, and the jags were consistently wavy like the
rays of an estoile or a rayonny line of division (refs. 8, 9, 10 and 11). In no cases did the erasing appear to
resemble an indented line, neither large scale nor in a smaller pinking-shear depiction.
Therefore, for purposes of recreating period armorial style for erasing, the erasing should (1) have
between three and eight jags; (2) have jags that are approximately one-sixth to one-third the total
height of the charge being erased; and (3) have jags that are not straight but rather are wavy or curved.
The predominance of the three-jag erasing is such that it can be recommended throughout our period
and across Europe." [Cover Letter for LoAR of November, 2001]
Kanamori no Tatsume - New Device
Sable, three ginkgo leaves in pall inverted and a bordure Or.
This device is being returned because the documentation provided does not prove that Ginkgo leaves
were known to Europeans before 1650. In order to overturn the previous precedent, the submitter must
have solid documentation proving that Europeans would have known about Ginkgo trees in period.
Ginko Leaves were previously ruled unregisterable:
Elena Bengrych verch Rhys. Device. Vert, a shakefork between three ginkgo leaves Or.
This device is returned for lack of documentation for European knowledge of ginkgo before 1650. This is
a violation of section VII.4 of the Rules for Submissions, which states "The use of flora and fauna native
to the New World, Africa, Asia, and other non-European locales will be registrable if it is reasonable to
believe that Europeans knew them in period." No such documentation was provided and none was
found by commenters.
Marion Nic Galen - New Name & New Device
Or, a cat sejant erect in dexter chief a compass star and a chief enarched sable.
This name is being returned because the documentation provided does not sufficiently prove that Nic
was used with Anglicized Irish. In the articles cited, Nic was only used with Gaelic Names. The submitter
could register Marion Galen, as unmarked patronymics were allowed in English. Also the submitter
could registered Marion ny Galen because ny can be used with English names.
Unfortunately, the device must also be returned because the device cannot forwarded with a name to
attach it to and only Laurel can assign holding names for devices to be registered. Once the name
problem is resolved, the device can be resubmitted without any changes. The device currently appears
conflict free.
Robert Shockley - New Device
Or estencely azure, a ford proper and on a chief gules three roses Or.
This submission is being returned will due to the name not being registered or in our submission
process. <Robert Schockley of Avensford> was returned by Atlantia in June, 2014 for reworking when
the placename "Avonsford" was found to be undocumentable. If the submitter fixes the issue with his
name, it was noted in in-kingdom commentary that this device is currently free of conflict.
Rúnfríðr Hofmanzdotter - New Name Change
Name withdrawn by submitter.
Seamus de Mantel - New Device
Per bend sinister sable and Or, a bend sinister counterchanged and in chief a dragon rampant to sinister
Or and in base overall a crescent gules.
Unfortunately, this device must be returned because the crescent is considered an overall charge
According to SENA Appendix I: the overall charge group must cross the center of the field. Since overall
charges must cross the center of the field, overall charges cannot be put in base. During in-kingdom
commentary it was suggested that if submitter drew the crescent small and put it in sinister base, that it
would probably be registable.
Tala az-Zahra - New Name & New Device
Gules, a falcon striking argent, a chief embattled grady argent.
This name must be returned because the submitter has not provided the promised documentation for
the name Tala.
The device must also be returned because Golden Dolphin cannot forward a device to laurel without a
name to register it to. Only Laurel can assign holding names for devices.
In Service,
Seraphina
