Incredibly, for over 12 years the accountancy profession has been void of its own national event; nowhere for accountants to grow, learn, and develop – and with accountancy being such a fast-moving profession, we didn’t think that was right. So we put our heads together, rounded up some of the biggest names in accountancy, brought in world-renowned speakers, and created Accountex – The National Accountancy Exhibition and Conference.

Attracting more than 3,000 Accountants, Financial Directors and other professionals from the accountancy and finance world, the show offers an unparalleled opportunity for financial professionals like you to gain expert insight and education in a dynamic, live environment. With over 80 seminars across 8 theatres and 80 leading exhibiting companies, Accountex is an unmissable event for any leading

professional in the accounting profession.

Accountex is committed to adding value to your practice, improving you as an accountant, and ensuring you’re on top of the very latest developments in your profession. Helping us to achieve that are the UK’s most important Accountancy Professional Bodies and Associations, and we would like to thank them for supporting Accountex.

This show guide will give you information of what to expect over the two-day event. You’ll find details of the comprehensive seminar schedule, information about the speakers and details of the exhibitors who are presenting the latest products and services within the profession.

Enjoy the show.

Whether you are here for just one day, or for both, you will not be bored. Indeed you probably need two days to ensure you can attend all of the presentations and exhibits that will be of interest and benefit to you, your practice and your career.

The changing face of the profession

Much has changed within the accountancy profession in the decade since the last time there was a national exhibition. Over the last year alone we have seen significantly increased interest in:

• Cloud computing;• Social Media; and• The distinction between overly aggressive and

acceptable tax avoidance

Looking back a little further accountants have faced the implications of, inter alia:

• Mobile phones and hand held devices

• Anti Money Laundering obligations

• Revenue focus on Transfer Pricing around the globe

• Keen use of promotional videos accessible through Youtube

• Losing the exclusivity of tax investigations work

• Economic recession in the UK and around the globe

• Ever increasing offshore-based outsourcing opportunities

• Moving to a Current Year Basis of assessment

• The introduction of personal self assessment

• Corporate tax self assessment

• Online research and reference resources

• International Financial Reporting Standards

• The proliferation of email as a communication tool

• Increase in the audit threshold to £6.5m turnover

• The merger of Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise

• Online filing of accounts and of tax returns

• The promotion of accountancy services across the web

• The use of Google as a key search tool across the web

• Continued tweaking and changes to the business tax system

• The availability of a range of social media websites

• The collapse of Arthur Anderson and the aggregation of what were the

Big 8 firms to form what are now the ‘final’ four

• Increased polarisation within the profession (the biggest firms and the

smaller niche ones)

• A new Penalty regime being just one example of HMRC’s new powers

• The new tribunal system replacing the Commissioners

• The introduction of Limited Liability Partnerships as a new option for UK

business structures

• More home based part-time and full-time accountant workers

• The Disclosure of Tax Avoidance Scheme (DOTAS) rules

• The facility to check the online profiles and activities of current and

prospective staff, partners, clients and business connections

• The start of e-commerce as a new way to facilitate business transactions

• Becoming ‘customers’ of HMRC

And that’s just the few changes I could remember off the top of my head. Clearly the list could go on and on.

Simply by attending the 2012 National Accountancy exhibition and conference you are aligning yourself with many of the top experts, advisers, brands and accountants operating in and with the UK accountancy profession.

WELCOME TO ACCOUNTEX

NOVEMBER 2012 ACCOUNTEX | 5ACCOUNTEX2012

The time may well be coming when accountants will find themselves on the archetype ‘burning platform’ from which they must jump if they are to survive. Looking back though, accountants, whether in business or in practice, have repeatedly shown that they can adapt as and when circumstances force them to do so.

Your attendance at Accountex will help you to adapt faster and with more knowledge, confidence and ideas than most of your competitors.

Perhaps you already know which speakers you want to hear and which events you want to attend.

If not, take a few minutes to check out what’s on today and where you will need to be for those sessions that are on your ‘must see’ list.

Remember to leave time to wander around the exhibition especially if there are there any

specific exhibitors you want to visit. These might include existing suppliers, their competitors or simply those promoting services and facilities you have yet to explore. Check out where their stands are and mark them on your copy of this guide. Then check them off as you visit or when you stop for a drink later.

Remember to leave time to take in those exhibitors that offer something new and different.

There really is so much to see and do that you

will want to get full value from every minute.

Some exhibitors will be happy to let you pick up their promotional literature, others will want to find out something about you first. Many stands will also have simple promotional giveaways that they will be happy to give you – some of these gifts may even be genuinely useful! And there are always plenty of sweets and other items to eat – all intended to give you a reason to check out the specific exhibition stand. Think of them as a reward!

HOW TO GET THE MAXIMUM VALUE FROM YOUR TIME HERE

WHAT ARE YOUR OBJECTIVES?

NETWORKING

THE RANGE OF EXHIBITORS

I must admit I tend to go for a fair bit of serendipity when I attend exhibitions.

I will generally know which are the key seminars and keynotes I want to hear. All too often though I find that these are the most

popular ones and that I should have arrived at the specific lecture theatre a few minutes earlier. But I was side-tracked by something that caught my eye on one of the exhibition stands. When that happens I sometimes find that I am too late to be allowed to enter the lecture theatre or, at best, I have to stand at the back where it is less easy to make notes.

You need to decide whether you ‘need’ to attend any specific lectures that have drawn you to the conference or whether you intend just to slip in to hear those that grab your attention on the day. Remember it is often a case of first-come, first served.

One of my objectives is invariably to benefit from the networking opportunities at an exhibition like Accountex.

I know it makes sense to focus my day around the keynotes and other talks that drew me to attend the exhibition. But sometimes that serendipitous chat with someone I have just met could be even more valuable.

It would be foolhardy to expect to ‘do’ any business while I’m wandering around. The best I can realistically expect is to initiate conversations that will only really be of value if I follow up promptly within the next week. I would encourage you to do the same.

Some exhibitors are already well known brands across much of the profession.

This is true, for example, of the larger professional bodies, software providers, publishers and various suppliers who have been around for many years.

You will also find plenty of names with which you are less familiar. These include some of the practice support providers, tax support providers and practice growth advisers. Some have been around for many years, some are newer entrants to the profession and one is celebrating its 5th birthday at Accountex.

In amongst the more conventional exhibits you will also find a handful of one-off exhibitors

including a franchise opportunity, a practice start-up consultancy, on online business database provider, a film financing company, professional fee funding, speedier bank reconciliations, R&D tax credit specialists, practice merger and acquisition brokers, online marketing experts and a global business giving initiative.

Have a great time!

marketing genius behind the company growing globally to a $23 Million enterprise.

In 1980 he decided that his real love was marketing and

speaking, so he formed The Results Corporation (TRC). He grew that to a $20 million company serving 23,000 businesses.

In 1992 Paul formed Results Accountants’ Systems (RAS) teaching Accountants in Public Practice how to leverage their skills to create far better businesses for their clients. By the year 2000, the company was serving over 3500 practices and their clients worldwide — it became the largest network of leading-edge Accountants yet seen in the world.

Steve Pipe is a Chartered Accountant who is passionate about helping accountants to become more successful by serving their clients better.

His second book, ‘The Firm of the Future’, launched in the US market in April 2003 and is now regarded as a standard text for professional service firms.

Now Paul helps create successful businesses around the world and is passionate about giving back to Social Causes to increase the level of joy in our world. He now serves as Chairman of the revolutionary Buy1GIVE1 organisation, making giving an effortless habit and making a huge impact in our world in a totally new way.

Paul Dunn is the marketing guru behind the success of many ground-breaking business ventures. People call him ‘Wizard of WOW’ because Paul is about turning normal into abnormal - ordinary into extraordinary.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Before setting up Remarkable Prac-tice Paul was with AVN (one of the largest associations of independent accountants in the UK), for 5 years (2 of them as MD).

Paul helped guide AVN profitably through a time of highly focussed competitive attack. He was also instrumental in amalgamating two offices into one and creating an enthusiastic culture of achievement. He even managed the doubling of prices at AVN and all the customer challenges this entailed.

Prior to AVN Paul grew a £300,000 turnover manufac-turing business into a highly profitable £1m affair. He bought custom premises, opened a London showroom and expanded into Europe. On the eve of selling the business to a committed buyer the team walked out to set up their own business making the sale worthless. Paul considers this a wonderful business education with some harsh but invaluable lessons!

How accountants in practice can change the worldAny accountant can change the world. One business at a time. In this short seminar Steve Pipe will not only show you how, but also give you all the software, tools, resources, training and guidance you need to actually do it.

This article has been written for people that are either working in practice or industry but are now considering establishing their own practice…

It’s amazing how we interact with a franchise on an almost daily basis often without even realising it – from getting your morning coffee on the way to work, grabbing the lunchtime sandwich, even

saying goodnight to the office cleaners as you leave work.

Franchising in the UK is big business. According to the latest British Franchise Association (www.thebfa.org) and NatWest Bank survey, the UK Franchise Industry generated £12.4 billion revenue in 2010 and 90% of franchisees claimed their business traded profitably.

THE PROS

• A tried and tested business model• Training• Access to funding• Ongoing support• Strength in numbers• Recognised brand

THE CONS

• Restricted to the business model• Can be a higher investment• Territory based• Locked in for a fixed term• Not a guarantee of success

So, if you are looking to set up in practice then why not look at one of the accountancy or bookkeeping franchises that are available today? The below will give you some food for thought, but for more information, and to find out if buying a franchise is right for you, come and see us on stand A344.

ENHANCING YOURREPUTATION WITH TAX CLIENTS

Modern tax professionals have to be equipped to communicate effectively, deliver out-of-the-box strategic thinking, and big-picture perspective, in order to compete in an exceptionally competitive market. In a dynamic and fast paced industry, working with tax clients requires not only analytical ability, but also excellent problem solving, and commercial skills.

The UK has one of the longest and most complicated tax codes in the world. And as professional services as a whole, including tax advisers,

accountants and lawyers, are estimated to contribute over 25% of UK GDP, tax professionals are an essential part of the economic system.

Businesses and individuals need tax specialists to guide them through the complexity and ensure they pay the correct amount of tax. After staffing costs, tax is often the second largest cost to an organisation.

HM Revenue and Customs acknowledge that without tax specialists, businesses and individuals would struggle to calculate their liabilities correctly,

NOVEMBER 2012 ACCOUNTEX | 43ACCOUNTEX2012

compliance rates would tumble and the system would risk collapse.

And where can these tax specialists come together in the UK?

The two professional tax bodies in the UK are the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT).

The Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) is the oldest and largest professional body for UK tax compliance services and related activities.

The primary objective is to promote education and the study of the administration and practice of taxation for public benefit and to provide an appropriate qualification for tax compliance work.

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) is the leading body in the UK for tax professionals concerned solely with taxation. It is committed to the advancement of tax practice, high professional standards, training and technical knowledge, increasing public understanding of tax matters and engaging with legislators and tax authorities.

How does this help you as a tax professional? Being part of a professional tax body provides:

A MARK OF EXCELLENCE

The ATT and CTA are recognised across the business world as the highest standards for the tax profession, marking out someone who can be relied upon to provide the highest quality tax com-pliance service or tax advice to their clients.

THE ELECTRONIC AND LEGALLY ADMISSIBLE SIGN-OFF OF DOCUMENTS THROUGH THE CLOUD

Most people aren’t aware that it’s illegal to email data between an accountant and a client and a new raft of regulations is set to add yet another layer of complexity that will make it essential for privacy policies and data storage/document manage-ment processes to be EU compliant.

The answer lies in a fiendishly clever piece of technology - Virtual Cabinet – that provides a real and tangible solution to growing concerns about the control and security of digital information. It simplifies document authorisation with a secure and legally admissible end-to-end automated delivery process through an integrated portal. Each document is given a Global Unique Identifier (GUID) and users can prove that the published document is the correct and agreed version.

This is how it works. Once an accountant has produced his client’s Tax Return, rather than print and post it, to the client for their approval, they simply publish it to the Portal in the “cloud” for the customer to digitally sign. No paper, no hassle, lots of time and money saved for all concerned. The process is fast and efficient and allows users to securely upload their documents to a hosted portal environment by a click of a button.

Developed by Lindenhouse Software, who has over fifteen years of experience in document management, Virtual Cabinet enables letters, emails and other documents all to be stored on computer in a safe, secure, easily retrievable form.

For the duration of the show Lindenhouse will be demonstrating how the Virtual Cabinet can be used for the

MOST PEOPLE AREN’T AWARE THAT IT’S ILLEGAL TO EMAIL DATA BETWEEN AN ACCOUNTANT AND A CLIENT AND A NEW RAFT OF REGULATIONS IS SET TO ADD YET ANOTHER LAYER OF COMPLEXITY THAT WILL MAKE IT ESSENTIAL FOR PRIVACY POLICIES AND DATA STORAGE/DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT PROCESSES TO BE EU COMPLIANT.

electronic sign-off of documents to meet proposed EU Directives covering secure information transmission. We think you will be surprised just how fast, efficient and cost effective the Virtual Cabinet can be.

And you won’t be alone. More than 2,000 UK organisations, including accountancy practices large and small, already use the Virtual Cabinet as their preferred document management system for accurately processing all correspondence, legal and accounting files, emails, in fact, virtually everything that used to get lost in traditional cabinets.

“Today, every firm has to deal with increasing levels of documentation. It’s been worked out that it costs £16,000, in paper and staff time to fill up a four-drawer filing cabinet – so why have one?” asks Alison Jackson, co-founder of Lindenhouse.

A strategically developed docu-ment management system, that incorporates portal technology, is the new backbone of successful organisations and cloud-based solutions are the way ahead.Users can file, record, scan, ac-cess, digitally sign, and exchange documents in a secure environ-ment via a standard browser.

Accept it or resist it, the world is experiencing a technological revolution where advances in information management and customer communication are returning ever higher levels of productivity, cost savings and efficiency. Portal technology is not smoke and mirrors – it is here now and hundreds of firms are already using portals to transform secure communication with their clients. What is there not to be excited about?

We are very happy to discuss whether particular types or size of company are relevant. Dr Mike Sweeting will be explaining the Partner Referral Programme during his seminar in the ‘How To’ room at 12pm on Thursday.

We are also happy to respond to emails at [email protected] if, for instance, you wish to book a short consultation with him or a colleague.

The Programme does not fit for every practice, but it does fit for most. ‘Pay aways’ are substantial. The work for you is absolutely minimal. Our marketing support can also have strategic benefit for smaller practices, whilst providing a real boost for mid-sized multi-site ones. See you soon!

W hat do we know about finance directors and group financial officers? We know that they have reached their position

within the organisation because the board feels that they demonstrate the vital ingredients to ensure their business is managed through poor macro conditions as well as boom times.

Ultimately, that requires strong financial foundations, absolute technical integrity, commercial insight and the ability to build and lead a team so that the finance function works fluently with the rest of the business. The person filling the role also needs the personality and confidence to have a voice at the board table (which keeps the chairman and NEDs happy) and the skill to act as the face of the company with third parties such as banks, investors, auditors and the media on all issues related to financial performance.

And then there is the relationship with the chief executive, which is where what we know is less clear-cut. By title, says Les Clifford, senior partner at Ernst & Young and leader of its CFO programme, “the chief financial officer is traditionally the strongest number two to the CEO”. But the function has morphed and evolved to such a great extent that “there’s a difference between the title that people carry against the role they do”.

As Ernst & Young’s 2010 report The DNA of the CFO announced, “The CFO’s unique optic across the

Beyond numbers

business, their rare positioning as a purveyor of the truth and their fact-based discipline has raised their profile to an unprecedented degree.” What’s more, CFOs are embracing a more strategic remit within their organisations to the extent that the 700 interviewed by Ernst & Young placed the ability to design business strategy and to innovate as second only to “deep technical skills” as the most important capabilities they would expect to have in three years’ time.

The role has diversified in such breadth and depth over the past few decades that there is more potential than ever for finance executives to exert significant influence over setting and executing strategy. Combined with their exposure as the front face to the market, especially during difficult economic times, and their capacity to ensure that business decisions are grounded in sound financial rules, it is no wonder the theory that finance people are the real power behind the throne has been reignited.

When Deloitte examined the evolving role of the FD in 2006, it spoke to 250 CFOs and FDs from large organisations about how the skills required for their job had changed. “Massively” was the consensus. “There’s far more dependence on analysis, communication and leadership than on number crunching and accounting issues; a more business strategic view,” said one. “It’s less technical than it used to be; it’s more about getting others to do things and
