AIN1501 E-tutor: H Carrim Accounting Information Systems (AIN1501) Part 1 - Topic 1 Study Unit 1 – Information In this study unit, we looked at Information, the characteristics of information and the uses and users of information. What is information? Information is a set of facts or data organised and processed in such a way that it provides additional value beyond that of the facts themselves. Information is derived from data or raw facts that represent real-world elements as illustrated in Figure 1.1 and 1.2 on page 5 of your study guide. In other words, information is data that have been processed in such a way as to be meaningful to the person who receives it. This information provides knowledge that leads the user to make decisions. **Data are the raw material available for processing into information. Data consist of numbers, letters, audio and video data and relate to facts, events and transactions.
