Dear Student,

ACE (Adult Continuing Education) at University College Cork is the longest established dedicated centre for adult and lifelong learning in the Irish university system. Coming back to education can be a daunting experience, but our experience is in helping people make that leap—we’ve been doing it for 65 years—so always see us as your partner. “Our lives succeed or fail gradually, then suddenly, one conversation at a time” (Scott, 2002)

In a fast moving, changing and uncertain world, people are increasingly challenged to explore and maximise their own potential and increase their own resilience in the face of such change and uncertainty.

Coaching is about a conversation with ourselves and others. It is also about relationships. Psychology and positive psychology in particular is about the evidence based scientific study of what potentially works best in our personal and working lives. This programme affords the student the opportunity to explore and study these various levels from an academic and reflective perspective.

From the moment of conception an individual is in a relationship. The nature of the relationship a person has with self determines how they interact with another. What is often not recognised is that conflict between individuals arises from unresolved conflicts within and unless attention and resolution of inner turmoil is resolved conflict between individuals tends to escalate. Aspects of relationships that needs to be known is the powerful role the unconscious plays in how individuals relate – within and without. No matter where conflict occurs – examination of relationship is critical.

The programme provides the opportunity for participants to explore these different viewpoints and is based on a co-creative understanding of humans.

Disability Studies is a vibrant and diverse interdisciplinary field of inquiry which examines the concept of disability as a social, cultural, and political phenomenon. In contrast to clinical, medical, or therapeutic perspectives, Disability Studies focuses on how disability is defined and represented in society. From this perspective, disability is not a characteristic that exists in the person. ACE offers the Diploma in Disability Studies each year UCC and in different outreach locations throughout Munster. It presents an opportunity for people who have a personal interest in disability issues and for those who are working, caring or volunteering in this area to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Parenting is rocket science and needs to be seen as the most important profession in society. Parents have responsibility for the physical, emotional, sexual, social, intellectual, behavioural, creative and spiritual lives of their children. Inevitably, parents – albeit unconsciously – carry unresolved hurts, doubts and insecurities from their own childhood years into their parenting role. This reality is not only true for parents; it is also true for each adult who interacts with a child.

The aims of this programme are to train participants to become parent mentors so that they can provide parents who are struggling with the understanding, support and skills to become more effective in the care of themselves and their children.

In our efforts to make sense of the world around us, and our place in this world, philosophy provides us with a unique tool. Philosophy is not a ‘Way of Life’, nor is it simply a theory about something. Instead, Philosophy is first and foremost an activity of thought: a quest after wisdom.

Philosophy is a pursuit, a form of thinking meant to guide action or to prescribe a way of life. Philosophy is good to study because of its breadth and has a bearing on just about every subject and profession. In this programme, we are committed to exposing our students to the most important philosophical ideas, thinkers and frameworks in order to enable them to deal with contemporary problems in a globalized context.

Short Courses

Since 2005, Adult Continuing Education has been offering an extensive programme of short courses. The number of courses on offer has increased steadily since this time, as has the number of participants that are attracted to our programmes. We are now one of the leading providers of short courses in an Irish university context. The short course programme is an integral part of ACE’s identity and our reputation for offering high quality, relevant and topic-diverse courses has gained in the public awareness. The success of our programme can, in part, rest with the fact that each year we strive to add new course subjects to our existing portfolio. This brings a sense of vibrancy and freshness to our programme and encourages, amongst potential participants, a sense of anticipation for what the new academic year might bring.

Our short courses cover a diverse spectrum from Food History to Creative Writing; Digital Photography to Family and Child law; Genealogy and Life Coaching to Ulysses and Vienna: a city of dreams. We hope that from the courses on offer, participants will fi nd one, if not more, that either serve to strengthen your knowledge in an area of existing interest or perhaps introduce you to

a new area of learning or perhaps facilitate your professional development.

Furthermore, these courses showcase the work and interests of the University in a public forum. We would like to thank and acknowledge our many internal and external partners whose participation brings success and energy to our courses.

While our courses are non-assessed, we see them as a means of engaging you in the rewards of lifelong learning; your participation may be the fi rst step towards committing yourself to a more dedicated programme of education and self-discovery in the future.

This year again we will broadened our availability of courses in terms of subject, time and location. Besides the usual evening programmes in UCC, courses are now located in many city libraries and the Crawford Art Gallery. If you wish to receive information on our short course programme for 2012 and 2013, please visit our website http://study.ucc.ie/ace and complete a request information form. We will contact you when course information is available.
