As a teacher of Social Studies Grade
7 and 9, and English Grade 9 at St.
Michael School in Calgary, Shannon
Boyle strives to provide meaningful,
experiential learning opportunities
for her students, helping them to
create connections
between the curriculum
and the world around
them.
Shannon is the leader
of St. Michael Water
Warriors, which is
affiliated with the
Centre for
Affordable Water
and Sanitation
Technology (CAWST)
Youth Wavemakers program.
Youth Wavemakers is a unique
water education program that
informs, engages, encourages action,
and celebrates the impact that youth
are having on local and global water
and sanitation issues. Through this
program, the students have been
engaged in a number of projects,
from creating weekly educational
announcements, to completing a
retrofit of urinals and water
fountains in their school in order to
conserve water. The Water
Warriors have been so successful
with their action projects, they were
invited to create a water awareness
public service announcement video
for the City of Calgary.
“If teachers want to construct a
more equitable, more meaningful
and livelier environmental
experience for their students, they
must concern themselves with
environmental and social issues
beyond the classroom walls,” states
Shannon. To do this, Shannon will
guide her students on a Water Walk
on May 8th, which will engage
students to apply their
environmental knowledge and skills
to real world issues, and to interact
with, develop compassion for, and
take action in the places where
students learn, create, and play.
Shannon was a participant in
ACGC’s 2014 Global Citizenship
Summer
Institute
(GCSI),
where she
had an
opportunity
to share her
own
experience
with other
educators,
and enhance
her own
teaching practice through learning
new ways to engage her students
about their school community,
global concepts and issues around
world. She feels strongly that
“experiencing new opportunities
and collaborating with like-minded
teachers will create a caring and
progressive professional community,
which enhances all students'
success.”

Introducing the Change Your World team!
2015 is a very important and strategic year for Canada and the world.
The new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that will replace the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will challenge the world to do
better on urgent global issues.
World leaders will forge a universal, legally-binding climate deal that
must be strong enough to avert global environmental catastrophe.
On its 20th birthday, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on Women’s Rights will be reviewed and
governments will be called upon to recommit to its full implementation.
Canadians will go to the polls in a crucial federal election. Visit the ACGC website to read the report,
‘Canadian Perspectives on International Development’ released in April 2015!
Join ACGC in advocating that Canada can and must provide stronger leadership toward a more sustainable & peaceful
world. Follow the #DoBetter2015 campaign, and visit www.wecandobetter2015.ca to learn more and take action!

Flood of Change shares the story of three youth in Nepal and their movement to take
action around water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) issues. The story is told by
Nepalese youth who filmed 70% of the final footage and found the words and images
to share this story.
The documentary is a simplified version of the chain of events that led to the creation
of Paschim Paaila, a youth network created by the Environment and Public Health
Organization (ENPHO) to take action on a diarrhea outbreak that happened in the
Western Region of Nepal in 2009. The outbreak affected over 5,000 individuals and
caused more than 464 deaths in 18 districts.
In July 2012, the Centre of Affordable Water, and Sanitation Technology (CAWST),
supported members of ENPHO and Paschim Paaila to film Flood of Change, with the
support of CAWST’s Education Program Developer and a videographer.
Access the film and an accompanying educator’s
guide with three lesson plans on CAWST’s
