FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

Col leagues and Diversity Annually, it is appropriate to honor those who have provided signif icant service for our professional association and our f ield of endeavor. Please join us for our 3 rd Quarter Educational Session, August 4 th , when we will honor 10 of our colleagues for their service to the f ield and to our College. A special thank you to our colleague and friend, Adam Walmus, FACHE, immediate past Director of the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, as he announced his retirement this past May. Adam has served our Board well since 2010 and we take this opportunity to thank him for his service, support and friendship to his colleagues in the ACHE-SETC and the entire VA system.

Several months ago our chapter began the process of formally pursuing collaborative agreements with other diverse professional associations (Latino Healthcare Executives, Asian Healthcare Leaders Forum, Rainbow Healthcare Leaders, and the National Association of Health Service Executives) to expand leadership opportunities for minorit ies in health services management. We are looking forward to embracing the ideas and values these leaders will bring as we work towards further awareness and accepting dif ferences. In addition, the Chapter continues to enthusiastically support the efforts to eliminate healthcare disparit ies through supporting the annual HDEART program with our active engagement of providing educational programming each year.

To all those who participated in the ACHE Member Survey last month, thank you! ACHE will provide the results of the survey to all the chapters in September. We look forward to reviewing your suggestions and creating new opportunities for assisting each of you to help develop your roles more fully.

Warmest Regards,

Jack

SETC'SNEWEST ACHE FELLOW DESIGNATES

Page 8: ACHE-SETC SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2016

The session commenced with a welcome from Jack Buckley, President ACHE-SETC followed by the presentation of an ACHE-SETC Service Award to Mark Biscone. The ACHE-SETC Service Award is given to individuals that have had an extraordinary and positive impact on the ACHE-SETC Chapter. Next, Jack recognized Adam Walmus, who announced his retirement from the Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center early in April, for his 35 years working for the Department of Veteran Affairs. Adam also received the prestigious Donald B. Wagner Award during the ACHE Congress in March for his signif icant service to ACHE.

This session's keynote, Dr. Tom Atchison, delivered a presentation that directly par-alleled with this year?s educational theme: ?Emerging Issues and leadership Chal-lenges?. With transformation, proactive and translational being just some of the words used to describe the change processes that are occurring in today?s complex healthcare environment. Healthcare leaders are expected to lay the ground work for change and coach his or her team to drive performance and guarantee success-ful implementation. With all of that in mind, Dr. Tom Atchison shared insight on ?Leading and Managing Change?.

He began his presentation by engaging the audience and asked for their input on setbacks that impede their organizations? ability to effectively manage change. The exercise provided clarity on dif ferentiating leadership and management require-ments for sustaining successful organizational change.

EVENT RECA P: 2ND QUA RTER EDUCA TIONA L (BREA K FA ST) SESSION

After the exercise, Dr. Atchison continued with the tenets of his philosophy for leading and managing change: his Six Crit ical Factors for Sustainable Change. Those factors are: 1)Value, 2)Leadership, 3)Vision, 4)Strategy, 5)Talent, and 6)Management.

Following the overview of the Six Crit ical Factors, Dr. Atchison shared some proven coaching skills that are necessary in order drive performance and gain strategies for talent management as change processes are implemented. Dr. Atchison wrapped up his session, emphasizing the importance of solving problems proactively and stressed the importance of continuous staff development for the purpose of identi-fying and combating common pitfalls that get in the way of an organizations ability to lead and manage change.

A special thanks to the members and volunteers for their attendance and participation.
