EPN also sets a long-term plan not only to take on the electricity provider role, but also to be the driving force of economic growth of an area through electricity infrastructure investment. EPN hopes that the government can help the company reach the goal by simplifying regulations on electricity governance for private companies.

As one of the biggest conglomerates in Indonesia, Astra International holds firmly to its principles, named the Catur Dharma. As an implementation of the first article of the philosophy, “To be an Asset to the Nation”, Astra established PT Energia Prima Nusantara (EPN), which produces energy and alternative energy that enrich people’s lives.

Founded by PT Pamapersada Nusantara on February 28, 2014, EPN was set up to complete the value chain of PAMA Group as a mine owner and mining contractor. It was intended to improve the efficiency of PAMA Group operations by opting for coal use in the effort of minimizing the fuel consumption and to foster the local area’s potential.

During the relatively short period, EPN and PAMA have successfully commenced the construction of the first power plant in Central Kalimantan (PLTU PAMA-1 thermal power plant project) with the capacity of 2x18 Mega Watt (gross). After obtaining Temporary Electric Power Supply Business License (IUPTL) at the end of 2015, EPN plays a role of holding business areas in parts of Central Kalimantan – equivalent to the position of State Electricity Company – and plans to supply 2x18 MW (gross) power which is scheduled to commence in September 2017.

EPN also formed a recent partnership with PT United Tractors Tbk for JAWA-4 (2x1,000 MW) Project, in which the company is involved as a project development support. The power purchase agreement with PLN was signed in December 2015 with the commercial operation date (COD) planned for 2020.

Until January 1, 60% of 44 employees hired by EPN are engineers of different specializations. For the next 10-year plan, EPN as individual power producer forecasts production capacity of 2,000 MW and maintains its support for the government’s 35,000 MW program. In line with the company’s vision of becoming a reliable, efficient and eco-friendly regional energy producer, EPN strives to comprehend design and operation aspects in mechanism (boiler, gassifier), civil (foundation, structure) and electrification (transmission network, distribution, instrumentation and control). The company is also expected to be able to manage engineering- procurement-construction (EPC) contract, permit and licensing as well as project management.

To cultivate the development of renewable green energy sources, EPN also conducts technical studies on efficient coal use using Integrated Gassification Combined Cycle (IGCC),

Bringing Up the Next Landscape is about preparing Astra to face the

challenges in 2016

PT Astra International Tbk has arranged another communication forum to prepare Astra Group executives as individuals for challenges ahead in 2016. Themed ‘Bringing Up The Next Landscape’, the event had in attendance Chief Corporate Communications, Social Responsibility & Security of PT Astra International Tbk Pongki Pamungkas, Republic of Indonesia’s Minister of Health Nila Farid Moeloek and Secretary of the Indonesian cabinet (2014-2015) Andi Widjajanto.

Executives of Astra Group had the privilege of sitting at the same table with the important figures and talking with them before they came up front to deliver their presentations. In his opening speech, Pongki Pamungkas said he hoped for a better performance in 2016. He also stressed the importance of Astra’s 2016 - 2020 plan for the company to successfully become the Pride of the Nation.

Pongki Pamungkas also took the opportunity to unveil new 2016

policies in several fields. The first policy was about information, including positive news of Astra Group activities on media, the usage of Astra International and Astra Group logo, internal human resources optimization, the preparation for Astra’s 60th anniversary and the enhancement of quality and intensity of the group’s relationship with the government and media.

Another policy was about environment, health and security, such as implementing Astra Green Company (AGC) with minimal rank of green and blue for manufacturing, mining and plantation category, and also about the efforts to reach Zero Workplace Accident.

unit product from 2015, as well as striving to become an AGC to reach sustainable consumption and production. On the responsibility field, Astra Group would apply Astra Friendly Company with the target to reach a 4-Star rating, CSR Programs to have national impact, and also the strengthen of Astra’s 4 Pillars.

Last but not least is the policy on security, such as the application of security operation excellence, Security Technical Competence, and building security information network in regency/city.

The Health in Business

Nila Moeloek also gave her view on the wide impact of health, including its impact on business sector due to the goal of business and health to boost the country’s dignity.

As a minister and a doctor, Nila Moeloek emphasized on the changing trends of severe diseases. In 1990, the severe diseases were caused by infectious diseases. However, since 2010, the trend had been dominated by non-infectious diseases, such as stroke, heart attack, cancer and diabetes. Ironically, this trend is quite

preventable by applying healthy lifestyle.

Another thing was about people’s low awareness on making the best use of Puskesmas/Community Clinic for preventive action, yet rather choosing to go to the hospitals when getting worse. “We want to build people’s awareness to go to Puskesmas so that all early signs of diseases can have proper treatment before they get worse,” said Nila Moeloek.

Nila Moeloek summed up her view by stating that health was the initial factor of the process to reach well-being. “Only by having a healthy environment and good education then we will be able to reach the well-being,” said Nila Moeloek.

This phenomenon was hoped to bring a new perspective for Astra Group in developing education and health related CSR programs.

New Economy Way

As the final speaker, Andi Widjajanto (Secretary of Indonesian Cabinet 2014-2015) explained the importance of paradigm breakthrough to boost Indonesian economy.

Indonesian government was now actively connecting areas by building strategic infrastructure and making connections for many production centers in Indonesia.

The trend was predicted to be continued to innovation on digital-based creative economy as Indonesia’s future economy pillar. The world economy was also projected to be positive by 2020, and the issue on Laborers’ welfare and Masyarakat Ekonomi Asean (MEA/Asean Economic Community) would keep on dominating the dynamics of 2016 economy.

The session was finished by discussion with Astra People on many predictions and success tips for 2016.

New Hope on 2016Having many insights from the speakers, Astra had many strategies to face 2016, especially on CSR optimization to be Pride of The Nation.

The event was concluded by giving appreciation for Astra Group internal media and also giving the awards for the winners of Anugerah Pewarta Astra, both for their articles on Astra Group’s CSR programs, taking group pictures and having a nice lunch.

Six journalists were announced as the recipients of 2015 Anugerah Pewarta Astra

After a long judging process, on January 29, Anugerah Pewarta Astra judges announced 6 best articles out of 192 submitted by 83 journalists. Anugerah Pewarta Astra (APA) 2015 was held to honor Indonesian journalists for their writings about social contributions of PT Astra International Tbk and Astra Group for Indonesia.

These award-winning articles covered Astra and Astra Group’s CSR programs in four categories: education, environment, small-medium sized enterprises and health.

The three judges (Risa Bhinekawati PhD – CSR expert and Australian National University alumnus; Arif Zulkifli – Editor in Chief of Tempo Magazine; and Mohamad Teguh – Editor in Chief of SCTV and Indosiar) admitted that almost all articles in the competition shared the same good quality that made it even harder for them to decide. They eventually managed to pick the final six based on several key factors.

Akbar, who prefers to be called Jay, said that his decision to write an article about the slums in Sungai Bambu village was a pure coincidence. It all started from the great admiration the journalist of Republika publication felt for Linggar whose amazing efforts in turning the densely populated slum into a beautiful and clean haven paid off.

“I have to admit, this program is inspiring and great. The area finally garners many awards after consistently being a laughing stock in the past. It changed the community for the better. What was fascinating to me was the type of plants they chose to fill in their new

Joining Derap Desa publication three years ago, Ulviyatun said that she first found out about the Anugerah Pewarta Astra writing competition online. She came up with the topic on an Astra Green Village (Kampung Berseri Astra in Bahasa, shortened to KBA) in Keputih, Sukolilo, Surabaya also from the internet.

“Maybe it was destined to happen. I almost had a hard time finding the Tegal Baru kampong. I was so thirsty at that time that I made a quick stop to the nearest sugarcane juice vendor. Surprisingly, the seller lives in the exact location I was looking for. As soon as I got the directions, I made my way there and met Tri Priyanto (Head of KBA Development Team),” the journalist explained.

Ulvi gushed over the KBA program, “Astra not only gave the residents of KBA Tegal Baru, Keputih what they needed, but also changed the

green space,” he said to Astra Magz. The kampong residents picked rare medicinal plants to grow and have regularly taken care of them. Akbar hopes for the continuation of this program in the future. “Hopefully Astra can give more substantial support to the community by providing a plant market where the residents can sell what they grow in their garden.”

Ahmad Baidhowi, known by his close friends and family as Owi, had his own reasons why he wrote a story on Astra’s restoration in Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java. Owi said that the activity was not only a mere restoration effort, but also a community empowerment program.

“Many companies have done the same CSR initiative in the past, but all they did was merely planting trees. Astra did it differently as the project was also aimed at empowering the locals. No one has done it before,” said Owi of the tree-adopting program.

Unlike other winners, Hafil picked a unique topic that reminded him of certain basic needs that many Indonesians still cannot fulfill.

Adi was so impressed by Micro-Hydro Plants program initiated by PT Astra Honda Motor that it inspired him to write about it for his entry in the Anugerah Pewarta Astra competition.

“I could not believe that AHM would do such large-scale CSR activity. I thought they did it in one location only, but as it turns out, they built 4 micro-hydro power houses already. I knew that it was not an easy plan for AHM to execute, so I was impressed,” he said.

For Erik Purnama, water issues are still an interesting and hot topic to talk about. “Water is essential to humans. I am always trying to write a piece or two on the issues because water conservation is really important and has a big impact in people’s lives,” explained the journalist, who won numerous writing competitions prior to this.

Erik was inspired to write the story of Jumari, the eco-hero who has actively encouraged people to stop littering on the Ciliwung river under the banner of his Setop Nyampah campaign. “The reduced number of Water Quality Index on Ciliwung is an achievement for many parties involved, not only Jumari,” the Republika Online journalist added.

“There are many communities who have also contributed to the restoration of the river.

Government and private companies like Astra are also actively taking part in it as well. I hope such synergy is also reflected in many other CSR activities.”

“I think, early childhood experiences shape who we are today, starting from the education we received. Unfortunately, it was not the same case for Rukun whose visual impair denied him of learning in a normal way. In fact, many students in Indonesia also have the same problem,” said the Republika journalist.

He later on added, “I can see how important and impactful Astra’s role is through the glasses donation program. It makes a big change in the lives of many children who never knew what it felt like to see the world clearly before. This is why I wanted to do a piece on this incredible story.”

people’s mindset. I have never seen any corporate social responsibility (CSR) program like this before.”

The real challenge of the program is actually the maintenance part. Many companies have started the same initiative before, yet failed in doing the real housework.

“Astra overcame the problem by educating the local people and making them realize about their crucial role in the continuation of the program. I think this is the highlight of the project,” said the Petrominer employee.

The lives of students of SDN 01 elementary school in Sabang, Aceh on a fine Wednesday afternoon (December 16, 2015) were about to change. Wearing batik uniforms, these kids sat in silence waiting for the arrival of Ministry of Health, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and PT Astra International Tbk which embarked on a tour to donate 2.000 glasses to 34 selected schools across Indonesia and made its first stop in the country’s kilometer zero point.

Astra ran a donation campaign on social media where every #generAKSISEHATIndonesia collected for a certain time period would be converted into new glasses to help young generations see better and, eventually, achieve their dreams.

Nadif, an 8-year-old second grader whose dream is to spend holidays in Portugal, Papua New Guinea, and Nepal, was among the lucky ones who received the visual aids. Another one getting the perks of receiving the donation was Wardah (11), a top student who could still manage to win first place in the recent National Science Olympiad provincial-level despite her minus 4 eyesight.

Entikong DistrictAstra International dropped by at the Indonesia – Malaysia border in Entikong, West Kalimantan on January 11 to give free 1,500 eyeglasses to students with vision problems. April, a fourth grader of SDN 08 elementary school in Nekan, Entikong District, was among those who needed them. At first, April did not think that her

short-sightedness would be a big problem.

During class, she often came up front to get a better view of writings on the blackboard. “Now that I have finally got my own glasses, I hope I can achieve again the first rank in class,” she said as she envisioned her future self getting into medical school in Pontianak.

Because of such bright future leaders as Nadif, Wardah and April, Astra and its partners are inspired to give Indonesian children substantial support needed to help them achieve their dreams.

In 2015, 4.005 glasses donated to kids in North Jakarta, Atambua (East Nusa Tenggara) and Nunukan (North Kalimantan) were raised from #generAKSISEHATIndonesia campaign on social media. Through this hashtag, Astra has up to now distributed 9,005 pairs of glasses in total.

This contribution is an implementation of the first article of Astra’s philosophy Catur Dharma: “To be an Asset to the Nation”.

In the next session, the kids got themselves put to the test as they had to climb ropes. Some were frightened as they made their first walk while some others made it.

Braille DayBraille is a reading system designed specifically for the blinds. In celebration of International Braille Day on January 4, LPT arranged a study tour for 32 visually impaired kids with 17 adults to accompany them. They had a guided tour in the 10 November Museum where it houses collections related to the riot on the exact same date in 1945. They also passed out flyers to visitors there containing useful information about Braille.

In another effort LPT does in the education sector, the foundation is committed to looking for scholarship donors who can help underprivileged students pay for their schools. “We keep on trying to get the attention of Surabaya government to make a regulation on inclusive education forblind childrenin regular schools,”

Blood donation is actually a healthy habit to pick up. In addition to helping save lives, a donor will reap the health benefits. According to a study research, it will trigger spinal cord to produce new red blood cells and eventually result in the individual feeling fit and energized.

It also helps lower iron levels, prevent heart disease, detect early symptoms of a serious disease and lose weight.

Before donating, a donor is recommended to come with a full stomach, get a minimum of four hours of sleep and drink more water than usual.
