Acids and Bases!
• Acids and Bases are liquids with either acidic or basic traits, meaning that inside the liquid there are either more negative ions or more positive ions.
• Whether ions become are negative or positive depends on whether there are more positively charged protons or negatively charged electrons inside of the atom.
ACIDS!• A solution that has an
excess of H+ (hydrogen) ions. It comes from the Latin word acidus that means "sharp" or "sour".
• Acids are compounds that, when placed in an aqueous solution, break into hydrogen (H+) ions and another compound.
• Acids are considered electron acceptors or proton donors.
BASES!
• A solution that has an excess of OH- (hydroxide) ions. Another word for base is alkali.
• Bases are compounds that break up into hydroxide (OH-) ions and another compound when placed in an aqueous solution.
• Bases are proton acceptors
The pH scale• The pH scale is used to decide
whether a liquid is acidic or basic, if the liquid has a small pH level it is acidic, and if it has a large pH level it is basic.
• Liquids with a level of seven, directly in between 0 and 14,are considered neutral.
• Some examples of different acids and bases and their pH levels are:
Strengths
• Acids and Bases vary in strength according to the pH scale.
- Strong Acid (Near pH 1)- Weak Acid (Near pH 7)- Strong Base (Near pH 14)- Weak Base (Near pH 7)
