Background  Information   This section includes background information on the statistical data contained in this report and on how they were obtained.

Categories  of  Foreign  Visitors     Foreign visitors to Laos are grouped into two categories: international tourists and regional tour-ists (day trippers).

International tourists are those tourists who enter Laos with a valid passport and visa obtained from a Lao embassy or consulate abroad, or a visa obtained on arrival at an international border checkpoint.

Regional tourists are tourists from neighboring countries such as: Thailand, China, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia, which share borders with Laos. They enter Laos with valid border passes or passports. Although some of them are called “day trippers,” they may make overnight stays. From 1991 to 2002, there was a type of tourists called Tourists for visa extension. They are tem-porary workers in Thailand who cross over the border into Laos in order to extend their three-month visas before reentering Thailand. These tourists are mainly from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh. However, from 2003 this type of tourist has been reclassified as "interna-tional tourists".

Data  Collection

From 1990 to 1994, statistical data on international tourists were collected from embarka-tion/disembarkation cards of the immigration department and from documents received by the LNTA from local travel companies. These documents contain the following information:

Name of Travel Company Name of tourist Sex Passport number Nationality Carrier Duration of stay Port of entry Place of stay Since 1995, data on international tourists have been collected only from embarkation/ disembar-kation cards of the immigration department.

Data on regional tourists were collected from tabulations sent to the LNTA by immigration of-ficers at each border checkpoint.

Data on tourists for visa extension were obtained from information received by the LNTA from local travel companies responsible for processing the documents of tourists for visa extension.

Data on tourist profiles, length of stay, and average expenditure per person per day were all calcu-lated using statistical surveys conducted periodically through sampling survey methods.

Luang Prabang Airport is now an international entry point, and regular flights are available from Luang Prabang to Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Hanoi on Lao Airlines, Bangkok Airways and Vietnam Airlines. In general, the number of tourist arrivals to Laos increased constantly from 1993-2011 with an av-erage growth rate of 20,36% even though it increased only 8% from 2010 to 2011. However, as can be seen from Table 1 the number of visitor arrivals decreased slightly from 737,208 in 2000 to 673,823 in 2001, and declined from 735,662 in 2002 to 636,361 in 2003.The main factors which influenced the decrease were the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the United States and the spread of the SARS epidemic in Asia in the first quarter of 2003. Nevertheless, tourism recov-ered again in 2004 to 2010. In addition the number of tourist arrivals to Laos continued increasing in 2011 which reached over 2,700,000 tourist arrivals and generating total of revenue of 406 mil-lion US dollars, despite natural disaster occurred in a neighboring country in the last quarter of the year. Of the total number of tourist arrivals to Laos in 2011, 36,040 used the services of Lao travel agents (128,798 in 2010).

Market  Situation

The year 2011 is not a remarkable year for tourism in Laos because overall number of tourist arrival increased only 8% over 2010 (25% from 2009 to 2010). Visitors from neighboring countries (ASEAN) represented the largest number of tourists in 2011 (2,191,224 or about 80% of the total tourist arrivals), an increase of 9% over 2010. In the same way, international tourists, considered the most important market for Lao tourism, grew from 394,539 in 2010 to 421,919 in 2011, or about 8% of increase, despite of some decrease in number of important markets.

1.  Asia  and  Pacific     Tourists from Asia and Pacific represented the largest portion of visitors in 2011 about 91% of the total tourist arrivals, however it recorded only 9% increase over 2010. The most remarkable change was the increase in number of visitors from Thai-land, Vietnam, Japan and Korea which represented a share of 58%, 21%, 140% and 125% respectively. The priority markets for tourism in Laos from Asia and Pacific are Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. It is interesting to notice that two important mar-kets from Asia experienced a decrease (China -7% and India -3%).

2.  Europe     Overall, the market share for Europe in 2011 maintained almost the same level of 2010. However, this market increased only 2% over 2010. This is caused by the de-crease of several important markets (8 of 16) such as: France -1%, Germany -6%, Sweden -5% and UK -4%. Hopefully next year, it will be getting better.

3.  The  Americas     In general, the American market had also a modest increase (only 4%). The most re-markable increase is in “other countries” which recorded 41% over 2010, followed by Canada (6%) and USA (only 1%). The market share for the Americas in 2011 was about 3%, with a total of 69,990 tourists. The most important markets from this re-gion were the United States with 50,092 tourists and Canada with 14,422 tourists.
