Burning Questions
Introduction to Toolboxes
Today’s Agenda• Toolbox overview• Blended Delivery• Training principles underpinning Toolbox
development• Using the Toolbox repository• Integration of Toolbox into a LMS• Customisation options• Applications of Toolboxes in training
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Overview• Interactive e-learning and assessment resources
featuring scenarios, images and activities. • Composed of Multimedia elements (audio,
presentation, demonstration, video)• Designed for use by training providers, industry and
business • Support various models of online delivery of
recognised training packages for VET sector• Licensed to make copies for distribution to trainees• Designed to be customised
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Structure - Managing• Web based file system• Teacher’s Guide (Delivery)• Technical Guide (Implementation)• Read me or Install document• Orientation, Induction or Tour
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Structure - Delivery• Most Toolboxes have been designed around a
metaphor for the learning environment, for example a virtual hair salon, a virtual child care centre or a virtual office.
• Generally, there are two distinctly separate components of a Toolbox:
• content (the actual teaching and learning material, generally web pages)
• resources (a range of documents and/or multimedia resources that support the content )
Introduction to Toolboxes
Purchasing Toolboxes• Toolboxes cost approximately AUD$400. Each
Toolbox comes with a teacher guide and installation booklet, and can be customised to suit different learner or workplace training needs.
• Toolboxes can be copied and distributed within a RTO or workplace free of charge, provided they are not on-sold for commercial gain or made publicly available

Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolboxes – Licensing issues
• Can reproduce materials contained in the Toolbox including CD ROM copies to learners
• Can be loaded on a secure website/Intranet and offered them to students worldwide.
• Enhanced Toolbox material cannot be sold to others without permission from the copyright owner, DEST
Introduction to Toolboxes
Using the Toolbox Repository• Bank of “Learning Objects”
(small ‘chunks’ of e-learning content for easy download and delivery)
• Free to download and use with trainees• Support whole units or performance criteria• Can be delivered from CD-ROMs, Intranets and
Learning Management Systems

Introduction to Toolboxes
Models of Delivery• Fully Online Delivery• Blended (Mix of online with face to face)• Integrated into Face to Face within a
computer lab or training room
• How will you distribute the Toolbox?• How will you support/ communicate with trainees?• How will you assess trainees?• How does the trainers role change?
Introduction to Toolboxes
Training – Support Material• Use Toolbox collection of resources to support learning
rather than to do the training• Use the Multimedia elements off the CD or Toolbox
repository• Install a copy on your local intranet, training computers
or domain
Introduction to Toolboxes
Training – Blended LearningMix of online and face to face delivery• Utilise Toolbox activities to support face to face delivery
so that skills can be reinforced and demonstrated• Move knowledge based learning to online to reduce face
to face training but still deliver generic units (communication, theory, use of tools and equipment, OHS)
• Provide learners with Toolbox CD ROM /Hang off Server/ Use an LMS
• Ensure learners understand how to use Toolbox to complete training objectives
• Involve trainers in PD and training model
Introduction to Toolboxes
Training – Fully Online DeliveryMaterials and Communication accessed by learner from
any computer connected to the Internet.• Use a Learning Management System (LMS) to track and
communicate with learners and to retrieve assessment tasks
• Determine delivery mode – Self Paced, Structured Group Work, Collaboration. Establish communication tools to underpin this (Discussion forums, virtual classrooms etc)
• Response time for support• Involve trainers in PD and training model• Induct Learners• Help Desk services and training support
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Implementation• Training online is different. Use a Mentor/Team Trainers• Immerse trainers in online learning methods via PD• Involve your training team in designing your delivery
(IT staff, Admin, Managers, Trainers, Students, Consultants)• Redo your training needs analysis to consider trainees
computer literacy as well as language skills• Redesign your delivery plan to reflect your current training
strengths and strategies for the online environment• Participate in the ACPET mentor program to build skills in
implementing e learning• Use less text, provide case studies, scenarios and problem
based learning when customising Toolboxes• Plan well in advance and immerse staff in customisation and
facilitation skills
Introduction to Toolboxes
Integrating Toolbox with LMS• Learning Objects can be uploaded and shared in real
time either using SCORM or by a link to your server, domain or intranet
• Customised Toolboxes can re “SCORMED” using free VET software to enable easy portability and deployment across your RTO
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Customisation• Toolboxes can be edited and enhanced:
– Content (text)– Documents (word, pdf, excel etc)– Images– Multimedia presentation (flash text, images)– Audio and Video
Introduction to Toolboxes
Toolbox Customisation• Replace word/pdf documents• Use HTML editor to alter, delete and add Toolbox
pages (html), amend text, replace images, add and delete links
• Alter javascript (to edit/alter glossary entries, page navigation)
• Alter Flash (images, text, interactions, quizzes)• Develop Video and Audio content/scenarios• Create Learning Object using Toolbox and RTO
sourced content (using ARED or other resources)
