    Acquisitions Dankmar Adler (1844-1900) Gift of the Newberry Library, Chicago, 1976 Papers, 1865-1900, 38 items, including a brief autobiographical sketch, xerox copies of 2 letters received, and 29 let- ters written by Adler mostly to his fam- ily during a trip to Europe in 1888 and from the Institute of Architects' conven- tion that he attended in Boston in 1891. In addition, there are a few clippings, copies of a funeral oration by Emil Hirsch and of Army discharge papers and an oath of identity.

    Correspondence and papers, 1944-1972, c. 50 items, including papers on art edu- cation and the philosophy of art written while Ashby was at New York Univer- sity, and photographs, catalogs, clip- pings, and announcements.

    Xavier J. Barile (b. 1891) Gift of Mrs. Camilla Tortorella, 1976 Papers, 1901-1965, c. 460 items, includ- ing biographical data; correspondence, some from John Sloan and Leo Lentelli; notes and personal documents; original prints, sketchbooks, and scrapbooks; personal photographs, photographs of Barile with his art classes and of Barile's paintings; pictures of the 1927 and 1929 Kit Kat Ball; slides and reproductions of Barile's cartoons and paintings; catalogs, invitations, announcements, publicity material, clippings, and printed miscel- lany. Most of the papers are about Max Cohn's activities in the WPA, the Delaware Valley Artists Association, and the National Serigraph Society.

    Joseph Comell (1903-1973) Gift of Betty Comell Benton, 1974-1976 Twenty-one boxes including corre- spondence, 1916-1973; an extensive diary, 1930-1972; c. 100 photographs;

    and files kept by Cornell consisting of clippings, notes, and miscellany. Many of the files are on other artists, dancers, and friends; others contain source ma- terial for Comell's collages. In his diary entries Cornell writes of dreams, his im- pressions of music, art, and ballet, his personal relationships, and his daily activities. Much of the correspondence is with his family; other correspondents include Hans Namuth, George Brecht, Tamara Toumanova, Eudora Welty, Julie Beckman, Ray Johnson, Anne and Hu- bert Kappel, Piero Dorazio, and Tilly Losch.

    Natalie Curtis (Mrs. Paul Burlin) (d. 1921) Gift of Margaret T. Burlin, 1974-1975 In the Paul Burlin Papers there is a folder of Natalie Curtis Burlin's manuscripts containing copies of "The Deer Dance: A Pueblo Indian Legend-Dance." In the correspondence, there is a copy of the contract between Curtis and Adolph Bolm about the rights to produce "The Deer Dance" as a ballet and a series of letters about the production of the ballet from members of the Curtis family, Paul Burlin, and Adolph Bolm, following Curtis' death.

    Edith Emerson Lent for filming by Edith Emerson, 1977 Scrapbooks, 1912-1976, 4 vols., contain- ing correspondence, clippings, exhibition catalogs and announcements, memora- bilia, and miscellany concerning Emer- son's artistic career, her curatorship of the Woodmere Art Gallery, Chestnut Hill, Pa., her friendship with Violet Oakley, and her presidency of the Violet Oakley Memorial Foundation.

    Richard E. Fuller (1897-1976) Gift of Betty Bowen, 1972

    Correspondence and papers, 1898-1972, c. 100 items, including photographs of Fuller and his family, articles and anec- dotes about Fuller and his career as a geologist and as director of the Seattle Art Museum, clippings, a catalog, and other printed material. There are also letters from friends and associates to Betty Bowen, Publicity Department, Seattle Art Museum, answering her re- quest for information about Fuller to be used in a book to celebrate the mu- seum's fortieth anniversary.

    Frank Greco (b. 1903) Gift of Frank Greco, 1977 Papers, 1922-1977, 130 items, including correspondence, slides, bibliographic material, exhibition brochures, and sketches and photographs of posters Greco designed while in the WPA. Also included are xerox copies of WPA cor- respondence and clippings related to Greco's recent work.

    Mark Green (b. 1932) Gift of Mark Green, 1974-1976

    Papers, 1974-1976, 297 items, mostly relating to Green's exhibition A Kind of

    Beatness: Photographs of a North Beach Era, 1950-1965. Included are the exhibi- tion catalog; announcements from the Nanny Hill Gallery; approximately 100 letters sent and 30 received; and 100 photographs (several self-portraits and photographs by Green) among them pic- tures of Richard Brautigan, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, David Melt- zer, Eric Nord, Paddy O'Sullivan, and Edward Silverston Taylor.

    James Hamilton (1819-1878) Transfer from the National Collection of Fine Arts, 1977 Papers, c. 1870-1967, 20 items, including a biography of Hamilton by Charles S. Keyser; a letter from Grace Greenwood with 2 photographs of herself and a letter from Greenwood's hu3band, L. K. Lip- pincott, with his photograph; an illus- trated manuscript titled "The Subject of Clouds"; 4 snapshots of Hamilton's paintings; several letters to his grand- daughters, Katherine Reed and Mrs. Walter Sonneberg; and printed matter.

    Serge Hollerbach (b. 1923) Gift of Serge Hollerbach, 1976 Correspondence, dating from 1969, and papers, 1946-1975, 216 items. Included are adiary, in Russian, 1966-1976; photo- graphs of Hollerbach and of his work; 3

    Isabella Howland (1895-1974) Gift of Barbara C. Summer, 1976 Papers, 1895-1973, c. 800 items, includ- ing biographical data; correspondence, writings, and notes; manuscript and typescript of '"Willy Nilly," written and illustrated by Howland; business rec- ords; address book; childhood drawings and memorabilia; sketchbook, sketches, and Christmas cards designed by How- land; photographs; invitations, catalogs, clippings, and miscellany. A member of the Woodstock, N.Y., art community, Howland's correspondence contains let- ters from the following: Eugenie Ger- shoy, Henry Strater, Edith Halpert, Peggy Bacon, Forbes Watson, Jerry By- waters, Adolph Dehn, and Dorothea Greenbaum.

    Robert Bruce Inverarity (b. 1909) Gift of Robert Bruce Inverarity, 1976 Papers and photographs, c. 1938-1941, 298 items, including 8 art booklets pub- lished by or relating to the WPA-FAP; 23 display panels exhibiting airbrush sten- cil prints, with 3 photographs showing how the stencils are made; 21 mounted photographs illustrating mosaic proce- dures; 245 photographs, many of them mounted on display panels, relating to the Washington WPA-FAP; and a display panel of 3 photographs of the mosaic at the Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, Calif.

    Morris Kantor (1896-1974) Gift of Mrs. Morris Kantor, 1976 Papers, 1941-1975 and undated, 380 items, including correspondence, exhi- bition announcements, catalogs, and invitations, notes by Kantor, a transcript of the Conference on Art in Higher Edu- cation, 1959, and miscellany.

    Nikolai M. Kasak (b. 1917) Gift of Nikolai Kasak, 1977 Papers, c. 1944-1977, c. 300 items, con- taining correspondence (most of it is not in English), including 32 letters from Professor Silvio Conforto, 1 letter from Alexander Archipenko, and a postcard from Alexander Calder; writings on physical art by Kasak; a copy of The Art of Kasak, along with a paste-up proof of the book; 2 unpublished manuscripts about Kasak; photographs of works of art; and clippings. An inventory, pro- vided by Kasak, is at the beginning of the collection.

    Henry G.     Greta Kempton (b. 1903) Gift of Greta Kempton, 1977 Papers, c. 1948-1977, c. 250 items, in- cluding correspondence, mostly with the families of prominent people whose por- traits Kempton painted; photographs, exhibition announcements, and printed matter.

    Jules Langsner (1911-1967) Gift of fune Harwood Langsner, 1973- 1974 Papers, 1938-1968, c. 3020 items, in- cluding correspondence, 1948-1968, with artists, art magazine editors, mu- seums, galleries, and others, and many letters from Langsner to June Harwood written while traveling in Japan, Hong Kong, and India, 1964-1967; extensive notes on the Orient, European art, art and technology, art and philosophy, and other subjects; drafts and typescripts of articles and lectures; Langsner's articles for Art News, 1949-1967; clippings of his articles from newspapers and maga- zines; photographs of him and of artists and exhibitions; and an address book, travel itineraries, and reports of various meetings.
