• Sumerians settled at the mouths of rivers

• Other people traded with the Sumarians along the water route

P

• People who learned to write were called scribes.

• Ordinary people worked on dikes and farms

T

• Tablets, made of clay were used for writing

A

• Artisans made cloth, pottery and jewellery

M

• Most houses were made of bricks and mudmixed with straw

I

• Irrigation brought water to the soil

• And the Sumerians were able to grow barley
