ACT2 Elected Officers Rick Riordan, President Catherine Mitchell, Vice President JoAnn Hansz, Secretary Sheila Henderson, Treasurer Betty Mangum, Past President President’s Letter The ACT2 Board has had several discussions recently about the future of our organization, and more specifically the interest in membership stepping up and taking leadership roles. These have been difficult, but necessary discussions. As we move into the coming holiday season and Annual Membership meeting in February, I want to highlight where ACT2 stands when it comes to the Executive leadership changes. The Executive leadership of ACT2 consists of the President (usually 2 years as VP and then 2 years as President), the VP (usually 2 years in this role before assuming the President for 2 years), Treasurer (intended to be 2 years) and Secretary (intended to be 2 years). As of this moment the President (yours truly), Treasurer (Sheila Henderson) and Secretary (JoAnne Hansz) have all fulfilled the obligations of the office. ACT2 NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2019 www.act2.club

President’s Letter

The ACT2 Board has had several discussions recently about the future of our organization, and more specifically the interest in membership stepping up and taking leadership roles.

I will be stepping down as President in February. Sheila will be stepping down as Treasurer in December (actually after serving multiple years in multiple positions). JoAnne has expressed a desire to step down as Secretary (after more than 2 years). Sheila, who has held multiple positions over the years in ACT2, has agreed to continue to handle the website, and we are thankful for that. Catherine Mitchell stepped UP last year to become VP (after we had a 1-year vacancy in that position) and I/we are very thankful she did - she has been a wonderful addition to the team. In addition to those positions, Eleanor Chajkowski stepped down after a number of years in the role of Community Outreach, a critical role for an organization like ACT2. I/we have not stepped up and filled this role as of this date. This brings me to the point of this message. This is YOUR organization, and in order for it to be successful it requires YOUR participation, not only in attending events, but also in providing commitment to leadership for 2-4 years. At this point, a small number of individuals have served in multiple roles for a number of years. I could list them, but I believe you know who they are and where they have served because although the roles have changed the names are very familiar. Bottom line is this - we need candidates for VP, Treasurer and Secretary to step up and take on these roles within the next month or two, or ACT2 may have no choice but to consider whether we should continue as an organization. That is a difficult statement I am being asked to make, but a necessary one. Therefore, our intent is to solicit your inputs over the next 30-45 days, and IF we have the interest, build a new leadership under Catherine's guidance that can be presented at both the holiday event on December 12, and then for voting at the Annual Meeting in February. Please consider this and let me, Catherine Mitchell, Sheila Henderson, and/or JoAnne Hansz know if you are willing to step up to any of these roles for 2020 (VP, Treasurer, Secretary). I thank you in advance. Regards,

Rick Rick Riordan President [email protected]

Original Book Club

We will meet on Monday, November 25, at 12:30 at Susan Newsome’s home, 100 Sakonnet Trail, Pinehurst #6 to select the books we will read in 2020. Dot Greenwood is helping us to select books for 2020. Refreshments will be provided by Kim Marlin and Susan Newsome. Please call Susan Newsome with any questions 621-3322.

Satiating Stories We will meet Wednesday, November 20th at 11:30 a.m. at Table on the Green to dine and discuss the offbeat novel Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson. Reclusive literary legend M. M. "Mimi" Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style Ponzi scheme, she's flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies - with a few stipulations: no Ivy Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane.

When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she's put to work right away - as a full-time companion to Frank, the writer's eccentric nine-year-old, a boy with the wit of Noel Coward, the wardrobe of a 1930s movie star, and very little in common with his fellow fourth graders.

As she slowly gets to know Frank, Alice becomes consumed with finding out who Frank's father is, how his gorgeous "piano teacher and itinerant male role model", Xander, fits in to the Banning family equation - and whether Mimi will ever finish that book.

Full of heart and countless "only in Hollywood" moments, Be Frank with Me is a captivating and unconventional story of an unusual mother and son and the intrepid young woman who finds herself irresistibly pulled into their unforgettable world.

If you would like to attend, please contact Jeanie Riordan at [email protected] assuring

an accurate restaurant reservation.
