2.2 Cell Review – Organelle AnalogiesAC T I v I T y

Student MaterialsPencilInternet access

DirectionsUtilize the Internet or other resources to research the organelles listed below. your task is to create an analogy image for each organelle and an explanation of why the chosen analogy fits. An analogy is a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based. For example, the cytoplasm is like soil in a planter because it holds all of the plants in place and transports the water to the plants. Complete an analogy for each of the organelles below.

2.3 Cell Division – Model the ProcessAC T I v I T y

Student MaterialsPlain paperStaplesWriting utensilsTextbookBinding clips

IntroductionMitosis and Meiosis are important processes when discussing animal genetics and how genes are transmitted to other animals. This process is explained in your text and can also be found through a simple Internet search for mitosis and meiosis. Your task is to create a “flip book” which will model the process of mitosis and meiosis.

Directions 1. Cut 100 slips of paper so they match exactly. It is best to cut two-inch strips from 8.5 by 11 inch paper

creating long, two-inch wide strips. This will make for the best “flipping”. 2. Utilize a binding clip to hold the 100 pages together. 3. Leave 10 pages blank in the front and back of the book (helps the flipping work better). 4. Starting from the back, begin drawing each step of mitosis. The goal is to draw the small changes that

occur through the process so that when the book is flipped, a “movie” of mitosis is created. 5. Once mitosis is complete, create a title page for meiosis and continue the flipbook by adding meiosis. 6. Be creative! You can add all kinds of effects to the flipbook to add to the “movie”. 7. Share your flipbooks with each other.

Example:This is an example of what your flipbook would look like.

2.5 Spider SyndromeAC T I v I T y

Student MaterialsPencil

The Spider Lamb Syndrome (SLS) is an inherited genetic disorder that is typically deadly for sheep that express the disease. Spider Lamb Syndrome is also known as Hereditary Chondrodysplasia. It is a genetically acquired disorder that results in deformities of the skeleton in young lambs. This disorder is a recessive genetic disorder. This means that lambs that have this disorder receive one recessive gene from both parents. This disorder is found predominantly in blackface lambs. General figures show that 75% of the lambs that have it are of the Suffolk breed, and 25% are of the Hampshire breed.

Case StudyThe Davis family has just added 100 ewes to their flock. They were surprised by an odd disorder that a number of the lambs exhibited during the first lambing season after the addition of the new ewes. A veterinarian comes to look at the lambs and asks if the previous owner of the new ewes had worked to make sure the Spider Gene was not present in their flock. You know the previous owner uses only their own two bucks for breeding and has never had the Spider Gene show up in the flock. The Davis family is worried they have made a mistake.

Questions 1. How would you begin to figure out how SLS has entered the Davis’ flock?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Is it possible for the previous owner of the 100 new ewes to have SLS in their flock even though they have never seen SLS in their sheep?

Utilize the venn-Diagram below to compare and contrast genotypes and phenotypes. In the Genotype circle, write characteristics that are unique only to genotypes. In the Phenotype circle, write only characteristics unique to phenotype. In the middle, write characteristics that are common to both.

both sides of the issue. 2. Research both the arguments for genetic testing, and those against it. you will be debating both; so it

is important to be prepared to argue either case. 3. Prepare opening statements (one for and one against) to share at the beginning of the debate. 4. Prepare to respond to questions that are posed by the opposing debate team. 5. Utilize the rubric below to prepare. It will be used to calculate your grade. 6. Format of the debate: a. Teams randomly draw for their number and stance. b. Both teams present opening arguments. c. Teams are allowed to ask the other team three questions. d. Teams respond to each other’s questions. 7.
