Safegard Smart Cost Effective Intelligent Damper

Control and Monitoring System

Introduction

Consultants in the field of fire engineeringhave long recognised the damage anddanger to human life that can be causedby smoke spreading through buildings, even when the fire is confined to a smallarea.

Smoke/fire protection can save humanlives as well as keeping damage toproperty and contents to an absoluteminimum.

Control measures for smoke/fireprotection, in old and new buildings, comprise a wide variety of systems anditems of equipment that must be

carefully integrated in order to ensuremaximum safety.

One of the most important tasks isperformed by the automatic smoke andfire dampers that are incorporated intoHVAC systems. In an emergency theymust close immediately to contain thesmoke and fire and prevent their spreadthrough the ducting or open immediatelyto allow smoke extraction to take place.

The Safegard Smart system represents anew generation of cost effectivesmoke/fire damper control.

The system has been designed with theuser in mind, simplifying installation andcommissioning of smoke/fire dampers. The Panel PC operates on anembedded platform and utilises solidstate technology for optimum reliability.

Specification

Control PanelThe Safegard Smart System consists of aPanel PC, UPS and pre-loaded software. The system communicates with damperinterfaces to provide intelligent controland monitoring of motorised dampersand monitoring of manual fire dampers. The data network cabling enablessubstantial reduction in costs whencompared with conventional systems. Thedigital input and output device (DI804) isaccommodated within the panelenclosure.

The Panel PC is supplied with SafegardSmart software and operates on anembedded platform, which is extremelyuser friendly.

Digital Input / Output Device (DI804)This device accepts eight volt free contactinputs into the Safegard Smart System.Typical inputs would be from fire alarmpanels, fireman’s override switches, manual call points and smoke detectors.

This device also provides four relayoutputs to be driven from the SafegardSmart System. Typical outputs would beto fans and BMS systems.

Building strategy (cause and effect) can

be driven from this input / output devicewhich is located within the Panel PCenclosure. Network Digital Input / Output Device(NDI404) is also available.

Smoke Fire Damper Interface (SFDI-E1)This device, which is a registered LonMark® FSDAC product, is required foreach smoke fire damper used with theSafegard Smart System. The SFDI-E1 controls and monitorsmotorised smoke/fire dampers. Thedevice ensures correct operation andmonitors the status of the damper, providing an alarm at the PC Panel in theevent of local power supply failure.

24V AC or DCConnect 24V via a safety isolatingtransformer.

230V AC 50 / 60Hz1 amp fused spur to be provided. ENwiring regulations to be observed.

Cable Specifications1. The maximum number of devices onthe network is 36. If >500m a networkextender is required.

2. If wired as a loop, the network ispolarity sensitive. In all other instances, the network is polarity insensitive.

3. Networked devices are wired in asimple ‘daisy chain ’, (in and out). Nocable stubs permitted.

Power Consumption24V AC or DC230V ACMaximum power consumption forcombined SFDI-E1 plus 24V or 230Vactuator is <17W.

These cable specifications arefundamental to the stable and reliableoperation of your smoke/fire control andmonitoring system.

Failure to adhere to these specificationswill result in unstable and unreliablenetwork communications and will voidall warranties.
