News RioTinto Groundbreakers ExhibitionRio Tinto acknowledges its partnership with the Shire of Ashburton in its 50 years of Iron Ore celebrations throughout Western Australia.

This year sees Rio Tinto celebrate 50 years of Iron Ore operations in Western Australia, with the Houn Maru departing Dampier for the Yawata Iron and Steel Company in Japan on the 22 August 1966.

To celebrate our Groundbreakers; the innovators and builders who began Rio Tinto’s five-decade legacy in the Pilbara, Rio Tinto have marked the milestone anniversary with a number of 50th events. The Groundbreaker Trail exhibition acknowledges the significant history, present and future of Rio Tinto. The exhibition also celebrates Rio Tinto’s partnerships within Western Australia, and has toured across the state, starting in Perth last year before travelling to five Pilbara towns; Pannawonica, Wickham, Tom Price, Dampier and Paraburdoo. The success of the trail has seen the extension of its tour. Rio Tinto currently have exhibitions in Geraldton, Busselton and the Perth Operations Centre, with a visit to Yandicoogina, and a second stop to Wickham scheduled this month.

The success of the Groundbreaker Trail is further highlighted through its attendance, as Chris Sailsbury noted last month; “the Groundbreaker Trail, has now been visited by more than 6000 people, of which 2500 were school children.” Following the close of the Wickham Trail, the number of visitors is expected to exceed 8000.

A key pillar of Rio Tinto’s community engagement strategy is working with local government. Rio Tinto’s partnership with the Shire of Ashburton continues to help grow healthy and strong local communities through projects that provide new facilities such as the Clem Thompson Memorial Oval and Sports Pavilion, Tom Price and Paraburdoo skate parks and the new Paraburdoo Childcare Centre. The partnership also brings communities together through programs and events such as Give It a Go Days, community welcome events, school holiday programmes, NAIDOC, Australia Day and ANZAC Day commemorations.

The partnership has leveraged $11.2 million of external funding to the region in addition to Rio Tinto contributions of $13.9 million, and has seen an increase in both town vibrancy and liveability.

The Groundbreaker Trail recognised the ongoing partnership between the Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto, and thanked the Shire for the provision of venues for the exhibition.

Pannawonica GalaPannawonica Gala is annual festival run by dedicated volunteers. As a not for profit organisation, the committee rely solely on fundraising and grants to host the event which aims to engage the community, foster relationships and boost community spirit. On 9 and 10 September a Back to the 50’s theme inspired a vintage diner with traditional booths crafted by some very talented residents. Families participated in some old fashioned fun with a bowling alley, hoola hooping, hotdogs and milkshakes provided by the Pannawonica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service. On Saturday evening Pannawonica’s Community Hall was transformed into a 1950's era Spring Dance and more than 60 residents dressed up in true 50’s style.

NewsShowcasing PannawonicaOn Saturday 17 September Pannawonica welcomed new residents by showcasing the town and surrounds through a photography competition. Hosted at the Panna Be In It Centre, over 50 photos were displayed in four categories. The Community Garden Group entertained the children with some creative play and planted an olive tree. Congratulations to the competition winners.

Youth Skills Clinics Children in Pannawonica have participated in a series of youth skills clinics throughout August and September. The aim of these sessions was to engage kids in active after school pursuits and develop their confidence in a range of physical activities. A total of 164 participants ranging from 5-11 year olds were involved in hockey, boxing, netball, and geocaching.

Fitness for TeensDue to an increasing number of teenagers who are living in Pannawonica to study via Schools of Isolated and Distance Education, a working group was formed to discuss issues for these individuals. Through this process it was identified that there was very little social, physical or creative opportunities in town for this age group. A number of proposals were discussed and will be implemented over the next 12 months. The first initiative was group fitness sessions. Over 6 weeks the small group of teenagers have tried outdoor hiking, yoga style stretch/strength classes, boot camp, a pool session and a circuit class.

Pannawonica Rodeo The annual Robe River Rodeo was held from 1 to 4 September with many competitors, visitors and vendors rolling into town to enjoy the iconic Pilbara event. After an atmospheric day of pounding hooves and red dust in the air, bands Hooligan and Renegade performed on Friday and Saturday nights to the enthusiastic crowd. Another electric rodeo experience accomplished successfully by the hardworking committee.
