NewsNameless Jardunmunha FestivalThis year the 2016 Nameless Jardunmunha Festival celebrated its 45th year in Tom Price. The theme was our “Ore-some” Pilbara. Kicking off with an art exhibition and awards night, the festival continued with two days of entertainment, live music, market stalls, family activities and carnival rides. The festival concluded in a big bang of colourful fireworks for the delighted crowd.

The community float parade was a highlight of the festival. Tom Price schools, sporting clubs and community groups featured in the colourful parade through the main street of Tom Price. Winning school group was Tom Price Primary School and runner-up was North Tom Price Primary School. Community group winner was Nameless Playgroup with Tom Price BMX Club as runner-up. The local business winner was Westpac.

Olympic Day in PannawonicaPannawonica Primary School hosted an Olympics Day to celebrate the commencement of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The children participated in a range a different sporting and educational activities related to the Olympic theme and the spirit of the Games. The day finished with a Great Olympic Moments and Movie Night at the community hall.

Maggie Dent TourParents and educators were delighted to have Maggie Dent ‘The Queen of common-sense’ come to the Pilbara to share her wisdom in early August. Tom Price Community Resource Centre organised a Personal Development session for teachers with Maggie on Tuesday 2 August. ‘Dare to be exceptional as a teacher’ was well attended by 45 educators from Tom Price schools and Paraburdoo Primary School.

Over the following 2 days, more than 100 Tom Price and Paraburdoo residents joined Maggie’s popular sessions, devouring her insight into raising and understanding children.

In Tom Price Maggie delivered her popular topic ‘Boys, Boys, Boys’ coordinated by Nintirri Centre. In Paraburdoo Maggie presented ‘Real kids in an unreal world’, themed around resilience, held at Ashburton Hall. Her ‘Back to Basics’ session was held at Karingal Function Centre. Karingal staff provided a crèche for the session which allowed parents with children under five years an opportunity to attend.

On Friday Maggie conducted two ‘Dare to be exceptional’ sessions in Pannawonica. A morning community session was attended by 54 local residents and a PD session with Pannawonica Primary School was attended by 19 teachers.

The tour was made possible by local organisations Nintirri Centre, Tom Price Community Resource Centre, Karingal Neighbourhood Centre, Paraburdoo Primary School P&C and Pannawonica Primary School who contributed financially and assisted in the coordination to bring Maggie to the Shire. This enabled the leveraging of Rio Tinto and Shire of Ashburton partnership funding.

of the Month nomination form by emailing: [email protected]

Mick SmithMick has been committed to the Tom Price Softball Association for many years, holding the President’s role for the past few seasons. Most recently, Mick took on the role of President for the Fortescue National FootballLeague(FNFL).UnderMick’sleadershipthecompetition has grown to see bigger crowds, more competitive teams and the return of a game between Newman and FNFL. This season Mick has taken on the role of secretary for the Fortescue Cricket Association and plays vital roles in local Tom Price sporting clubs - Tigers Football Club, Scorchers Football Club, and UnitedSoftballClub.

Thank you Mick for supporting our local clubs and inspiring volunteers!

Name: Mick Smith

Occupation: Production Supervisor.

Number of years in your town? 16 years.

What is your favourite thing about your town? The community spirit of a small town where most people are willing to chip in to help someone out.

How would you describe your personality? Strong minded, honest, loyal and always willing to help out.

What hobbies and activities do you like? Quality time with my family and anything sport (watching or playing).

Who or what inspires you? My wife, Stephanie and my two girls Mia and Brooklyn.

What volunteer work do you currently do? President for the football league, secretary for men’s softball and cricket. I also manage my softball team as well as helping out with the cricket and football teams. Statistician for women’s softball.

What motivates you to volunteer? I volunteer because I enjoy it and I understand that without volunteers we don’t have the sports or the community events in this town. I take my hat off to the Nameless Committee who every year give us a great event which involves a lot of work behind the scenes.

Why do you think people don’t volunteer? It’s not for everyone. Some people just don’t want to, other people couldthinkthereistoomuchwork/timeinvolvedwhenthere isn’t, or they just don’t know where to start.

How can we encourage more people to volunteer? Just start! There are no special skills, just experience. Volunteering for a community group is not hard if you manageyourtime/roleadequately.
