Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Filtering

MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE PROBLEM

In recent years, substantial growth in the number of electronic devices designed to equip our installations has resulted in significant changes in the types of loads connected to the power distribution system.

These devices are currently equipped with electronics that in one way or another increase the efficiency of the tasks, production processes and activities we perform. Everyone uses computers for personal use or for processing and

controlling production systems with speed drives, air-conditioning units, lifts that slow down when approaching their destination floor, etc. These devices are equipped with rectifiers, modulators, etc., which distort the wave shape of the current to achieve their correct operation.

All in all, these devices and units have definitely improved our quality of life; however, they also lead to greater contamination of our electric system and thus to high levels of harmonics.

Ideal wave shape and distorted wave shape

How are harmonics generated?Harmonics are produced by non-linear loads that absorb non-sinusoidal current. The most common loads, in both industrial and domestic environments, are the following:

—Speed / frequency drives —Discharge lamps (mercury vapour, sodium, energy-saving, etc.) —Rectifiers —AC/DC transducers —Arc welding —Induction furnaces —UPS —Computers

What anomalies do they generate?

—Errors in electronic units —Heating of conductors —Neutral overloading —Circuit breaker tripping —Capacitor overloading —Transformer vibrations —Heating of transformers —Heating of motors

MORE THAN JUST A SIMPLE PROBLEM A SINGLE SOLUTION

The range of AFQ active parallel multi-function filters offers the most complete solution for solving quality-related problems in industrial, commercial or service installations, caused not only by harmonics but also by current offsets (depending on the model) and even by the consumption of reactive power (usually of the capacitive type).AFQ filters are equipped with an intuitive touch-screen display, allowing all the necessary programming actions to be performed.

With AFQ

Harmonics without AFQ

They also display the network status upstream and downstream from the filter connection point, providing a "before and after" comparison which can be used to assess the effectiveness of the filter. If greater filtering capacity is required, up to eight filters can be connected in parallel (the same model of filters should be used). AFQ active filters are multi-function 3-in-1 units, with cutting edge technology to perform three different functions with a single unit:

1. Harmonic filtering 2. Power factor correction 3. Phase balancing

Reduction of harmonic currents up to

the 50th harmonic (2,500 Hz). Optional

selection of the harmonic frequencies

to be filtered in order to achieve higher

efficiency.

Power factor correction. Both inductive

and capacitive currents.

Current balancing correction, improving

the phase-to-phase consumption of an

installation. The 4-wire model reduces

the neutral current.

Touch-screen display

AFQ filters feature an advanced system that enable quick start-up with three simple steps:

AFQ filters have been designed for easy installation and management, offering top performance from day one. The following functions greatly improve the start-up process:

» Three-step start-up: Connect, Configure, Start.

» Touch-screen display for quick management of all parameters: quick, self-explanatory menus.

» Alarms: polarity, temperatures, resonance, voltages, overload, contactors, etc.

Touch-screen HMI display, for quickmanagement and configuration of the unit.

It can also displaythe "in situ" filter data.

ConnectivityCheck the data of your active filters in real time, process the data via the screens and generate reports by remote connection using PowerStudio SCADA.

AFQ active filters are very versatile, since they can be configured with different configurations and operating modes. Therefore, they can be used in any type of installation and for any type of situation:

» vailable for 3- or 4-wire installations. » Available voltages: 230, 400 and 480 V (AFQ-3W). » They adapt to the complexity of each installation,

since they are connected to the load or network side » Adjustable priority to power factor correction,

phase balancing and harmonic filtering

Expandable

Multi-function

The installation can be expanded with up to eight active filters in parallel, which can have different nominal values.

AFQ active filters can work in 12 different modes, with a series of simple combinations, prioritising their three main functions: Harmonic filtering, Power factor correction and Phase balancing.

Standard installation Active filtering units should be installed on the main line (Level 2), according to the filtering needs, for example in an electric vehicle charging station or an industrial

unit with various sources of harmonics; or else they should be installed close to the loads (Level 3), such as in the case of a Data Processing Centre (DPC).

AFQ filters are the best solution in installations where wave shape quality and electrical service continuity are of utmost importance. They are also one of the best solutions when compliance with the harmonic emission standard is required. Examples of installations where AFQ filters are installed:

AFQ-3W Active Parallel Multi-function Filter

AFQ multi-function parallel active filters offer the most complete solution for solving quality-related problems in three-phase industrial, commercial or service installations, caused not only by harmonics but also by the consumption of reactive power (usually of the capacitive type). The functions implemented in all the models are listed below:

— Multi-range voltage (230* - 400 - 480 VAC) and dual frequency (50/60 Hz). — Reduction of harmonic currents up to the 50th harmonic (2,500 Hz). — The user can select the harmonic frequencies to be filtered

in order to achieve greater filter efficiency. — Power factor correction. Both inductive and capacitive currents. — Balancing of phase currents.

If larger filtering capabilities are required, it is possible to connect up to 8 filters in parallel, which can be of different nominal current (filters must be the same model AFQ-3W or AFQ-4W).
