5. Symposium on breast disorders - 4th June 2017

The optimal care of patients with breast cancer is rapidly changing as a result of advances in all aspects of patient care, including prevention, screening, and detection, as well as in the primary treatment modalities of surgery, radiation therapy, endocrine therapy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and novel biologic therapies. There is an increasing focus on providing multidisciplinary care for patients with complex diseases such as breast cancer through the use of integrated teams of professionals representing the relevant treatment modalities, including surgery, radiation therapy, and systemic medical interventions.

In our country the first stop for most of the patients with breast disorder are Gynecologists, Family physicians. They are then referred to the concerned specialist- Surgeon or an Oncologist.

KSC AGOI had organized a ‘Symposium on Breast Disorders’ on June 4th 2017 in association with BSOG and supported by Lalpath Labs, bringing together gynecologists, general surgeons, family physicians, surgical, medical, and radiation oncologists and scientists with the aim of fostering awareness of the treatment options in each therapeutic area and encouraging multimodality treatment.

It was a well-attended and well appreciated event. 130 doctors from Bangalore, Bellary, Hasan and Kolar attended it. The topics included basics of breast disorders, prevention and screening, diagnostics, overview of current treatment of breast cancer and what is in future of breast cancer.

The speakers chosen were experts in their respective fields and did a wonderful job of conveying the subject precisely and to the point.

All the delegates found it very useful, got some practical tips which they could use in their day to day practice.

KSC AGOI plan to organize such events and more on a regular basis in the future.

May 13 2017, 0:02 IST

The incidence of breast cancer is on rise in India. With advancements in its treatment, the number of women surviving this disease is also increasing. The end of treatment can be both stressful and exciting. One would be relieved to finish the treatment, yet it’s hard not to worry about cancer coming back.

It’s important to know that normal life is possible after the treatment. It is only a matter of time before one gets back the initial energy levels. Hair starts growing once the last chemotherapy is completed. Within two to three months, the colour of the skin, its texture and nail colour get back to normal. While the focus should be on getting back to a full life slowly, few precautions also need to be taken for general well-being.

After the treatment for breast cancer, follow-up care is very important. This helps maintain the good health and manage any side effects from the treatment. It also helps you look out for signs of cancer coming back, and screen yourself for other types of cancer. Almost any kind of cancer treatment can have side effects. Some might only last for a few days or weeks, but others might last for a long time. Some side effects might not even show up until years after finishing the treatment.

Here are some follow-up tips after the breast cancer treatment:

Follow-up visits: These visits should be once in three months for the first three years, and once in six months for the next two years, and subsequently once a year. Mammograms: After the breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy, mammogram is recommended once a year. Pelvic exams & bone density tests: These tests are for women who are advised hormone therapy. Other tests: Other tests such as blood tests and imaging tests (like bone scans, ultrasound scan and chest X-rays) may be done if required. Apart from these, there are some general recommendations for women recovering from breast cancer. They include indulging in lots of fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, maintaining an optimal BMI, cutting out smoking and drinking. Consult a doctor if you notice a lump under the arm or along the chest wall, rash or skin changes, change in the size, shape of the breast or chest wall, or experience constant pain, headache, chronic cough, abdominal pain, excessive tiredness, loss of weight and unusual vaginal bleeding. Regularly scheduled follow-up care helps increase the likelihood of finding a treatable recurrence and of managing any long-term side effects.

Life after breast cancer treatment can be as beautiful and normal as before. It’s an opportunity for the woman to reinvent herself. Each survivor could be a role model for newer patients and brand ambassadors for courage and hope. She can be someone who meets cancer in her chest, humbles it and moves on to be known as a cancer survivor.
