Cloud computing is a computing paradigm, where a large pool of systems are connected in

private or public networks,to provide dynamically scalable infrastructure for application, data

and file storage. With the advent of this technology, the cost of computation, application

hosting, content storage and delivery is reduced significantly. Cloud computing is a practical

approach to experience direct cost benefits and it has the potential to transform a data centre

from a capital-intensive set up to a variable priced environment. The idea of cloud computing

is based on a very fundamental principal of , reusability of IT capabilities'. The difference

that cloud computing brings compared to traditional concepts of “grid computing”,

“distributed computing”, “utility computing”, or “autonomic computing” is to broaden

horizons across organizational boundaries. The entire presentation was very interesting and

Dr. Das delivered a talk on applications of Bioinformatics in genomics. Bioinformatics is both

an umbrella term for the body of biological studies that use computer programming as part of

their methodology, as well as a reference to specific analysis "pipelines" that are repeatedly

used, particularly in the fields of genetics and genomics. Common uses of bioinformatics

include the identification of candidate genes and nucleotides (SNPs). Often, such identification

is made with the aim of better understanding the genetic basis of disease, unique adaptations,

desirable properties (esp. in agricultural species), or differences between populations. In a less

formal way, bioinformatics also tries to understand the organisational principles within nucleic

acid and protein sequences. It has proved to be quite beneficial for our 5th semester students

of biotechnology and Microbiology.

8. DOCUMENTARY SCREENING BY STUDENTS

Date: 25/3/2015

A Documentary Screening was held in the Department of Mass Communication, AIMT on 25

1. SEMINAR ON “GENE: ITS STRUCTURE AND EXPRESSION”

Date: 5/2/2016 Speaker: Mr. Sanjib Kumar Das JRF of Biotech Hub, Department of Botany,

B.P. Chaliha College, Nagarbera

Molecular biology and biotechnology is having an increasing impact in many other areas of

biology including bioremediation, environmental clean-up, animal husbandry and aquaculture.

Mr. Das delivered a talk on applications of molecular biology in engineering of organisms to

break down and detoxify pollutants, in commercial fisheries salmon have been engineered to

express growth hormone – as a result, these transgenic fish grow faster than wild-type fish, and

can therefore come to market faster, cattle and sheep have been engineered to express valuable

pharmaceuticals in their milk and could be engineered to have a greater muscle to fat ratio.

The specific techniques used in molecular biology are native to the field but may also be

combined with methods and concepts concerning genetics and biochemistry, so there is no

big distinction made between these disciplines.

2. SEMINAR ON “AN INSIGHT INTO THE MECHANISMS OF T-CELL

MATURATION, ACTIVATION AND DIFFERENTIATION”

Date: 8/03/2016 Speaker: Dr. Anusree Mahanta, Department of Molecular Biology and

Biotechnology, Tezpur University

Immunology is the branch of biomedical science that deals with the response of an organism

to antigenic challenge and its recognition of what is self and what is not. Dr. Mahanta dealt

with the subject of defence mechanisms including all physical, chemical and biological

properties of the organism that help it to combat its susceptibility to foreign organisms,

material, etc. The speaker described how understanding the immune system also gives us the

potential to develop therapies that control infectious disease (this includes vaccines, of which

a great many have now been developed), cancer, and other diseases resulting from the

malfunction of the immune system.

3. SEMINAR ON “CHANGING TRENDS IN MODERN BIOLOGY: GENE TO

GENOMICS”

Date: 31/03/2016 Speaker: Miss Lipika Lahkar, Department of Botany, Handique Girls

College,

Miss Lahkar delivered an insightful talk on how genetics and genomics are different. Genetics

is the study of heredity, or how the characteristics of living organisms are transmitted from one

generation to the next via DNA, the substance that comprises genes, the basic unit of heredity.

Genetics dates back to Augustinian friar and scientist Gregor Mendel, whose studies of pea

plants in the mid-1800s established many of the rules of heredity. Genetics involves the study

of specific and limited numbers of genes, or parts of genes, that have a known function. In

biomedical research, scientists try to understand how genes guide the body’s development,

cause disease or affect response to drugs.

Genomics, in contrast, is the study of the entirety of an organism’s genes – called the genome.

Using high-performance computing and math techniques known as bioinformatics, genomics

researchers analyze enormous amounts of DNA-sequence data to find variations that affect

health, disease or drug response. Traditionally, public health applications of genomics have

focused on rare diseases, such as those identified through newborn screening programs. Much

of the future promise of genomics rests on its application to common diseases.
