We focus upon things like growth mind-set, listening skills, empathy and being willing to participate and try, even if something is difficult. Your Aims Please describe your aims for this residential course and any specific objectives. Some objectives you may choose are; confidence, growth mind-set, self –esteem, personal responsibility, teamwork, listening, communication, skill development, getting to know new people, fun. We would also like to know any topics you covering at school which might link into the outdoors, for example are you running a topic on mountains or rivers? Explorer’s Journal This beautifully designed book is available to all groups and schools in key stages 2 – 3, encouraging reflection and recording learning. Instructors will incorporate use of the journals into sessions, and encourage use of them in free time. The children will automatically receive journals on arrival. There is no additional cost for the journals. We can, by special arrangement (at your cost) post the journals out to you before your visit. We would not like journals for each child/ young person Programme Design We will be pleased to design a programme for you, based on our experience of what works well. Activity Choices

Please indicate the activities you would like to include in your programme, insert a number if you would like more than one session.

Activity Details/Information , 2-4

Core Activities

Rock Climbing

(1-2 Sessions)

Real rock, everyone is active. A good personal and team challenge, with technical skills (will include a small amount bouldering)

BoulderingLow level rock-climbing. Works well as a half session or a good intro to rock-climbing. Very active, some teamwork

Abseiling Not a good choice during the winter, only one person active at a time

Rock Scrambling(Harrisons)

Team adventure at the local Harrisons rocks, squirming through tunnels, exploring small caves and scaling boulders. Great fun, very active with a teamwork element too.

Skiing (1-3 Sessions) Huge progress possible, some groups come just for skiing, very active

Although Bowles has its own ski awards within our journals, there is a UK wide award called UK Snowsports. Please indicate if you would like students to take the UK Snow Sport awards for £3 per person.

Pool KayakingGood preparation for a day out kayaking on open water. Also good as a stand-alone session. Very active, lots of fun and learning.

Kayaking Trip

A great trip to a lake or journey along a river. Can be a full day or half a day.

Only recommended in the warmer months Apr – Sept. Venues will change dependent on weather and water conditions.

Water sports Day

This is a great activity at a local private lake. We run Kayaking, canoeing and Raft building. This is a very active day with a huge amount of time on the water. The lake is very local meaning a large amount of time to experience the three activities. Highly recommended for May, June and July

Low Ropes Course Very active, good for developing risk awareness, responsibility & building confidence

Zip WireGood individual thrill. Can build confidence. Teamwork needed. Same limitations as abseiling

Leap Of FaithScale the telegraph pole and leap for the trapeze a unique challenge. Groups are encourage to goal set, work together and support each other.

Orienteering at Centre Classic outdoor skill, ties in with curriculum, map reading, some teamwork, very active

Orienteering In Local Woods

As above, builds independence as groups go off on their own (Centre Orienteering will be included if not chosen separately)

Orienteering Competition

Adds a competitive element - motivates competitive groups (must have a centre training session first)

Night walkIn the local countryside, we play games as well as walking. Remember, in summer it won't be dark! Very memorable.

Earth walk Environmental awareness games. Can be linked with problem-solving or bouldering

Archery

A great summer evening session or a split daytime session. Genuinely achievable new skill which is accessible to all.

Bushcraft SkillsA fun practical session which looks at the fundamentals of survival; shelter, water, fire. May involve some fire lighting and campfire cookery!

Mountain BikingGreat activity if the budget stretches to it. Extra cost £10.00 per participant - invoiced after the course when exact numbers are known. Participants must be able to ride a bike.

Core Activities with a Team Focus

Team workLots of activity, everyone involved. Lots of challenges requiring many skills, all to improve cohesion

Team ChallengeTen challenges set around Bowles woods. Multi-group competition with leader/teacher involvement. A great last evening or end-of trip activity.

Pool Raft Building Teamwork in a heated pool! Very active, kids love it

Raft Building on a lake Very popular, teamwork and fun - Not recommended Nov-Feb. Some travel involved.

Expeditions and Overnight Activities

Brilliant for developing a host of skills and qualities, including self-reliance, teamwork and perseverance in the beautiful Sussex countryside

Walking Expedition Any duration from half a day

Overnight Camp On its own or with a walking expedition

Overnight Bivvy On its own or with a walking expedition

Activities For Older Age Groups

High Ropes CourseNegotiate the aerial ropes course. Risk management in the trees! Buddy system develops teamwork. Ages 14 plus

Jacobs LadderScale the giant swinging ladder with rungs like telegraph poles. A serious team challenge for up to 4 climbers Ages 14 plus

Creative/Fun Evening Sessions

All done with one instructor for multiple groups

Treasure Hunt Very active, kids work together, tires them out before bedtime

Talent Show We provide the venue; the young people provide the talent (hopefully!)

Camp Fire What better way to end the day - marshmallows and hot chocolate optional

DVD Session Feel free to bring your own DVD

Part of a structured long term program . We are able to bring all our teambuilding events to your school. This can be done before your trip as part of long term development plan. Our in-school teambuilding is very cost effective and will free up some time when you are here at Bowles.

Course Coordinator. Each school is assigned a Bowles coordinator who will oversee your residential. If you have any messages for them which will aid your visit, let us know.
