It’s 10pm in the studio and the deadline is barreling toward you.
You strain to turn your mind away from the small stuff, as you struggle to come up with the next big thing.
A miracle would be appreciated, but you know better.
Magic is what is required.
Alchemy.
That elusive sorcery of an idea, that whips into a frenzy all the parts of your experience.
A dose of humor. A dash of heart. A pinch of perseverance.
And a shit-ton of creativity.
AND WHEN SPUN JUST SO AND THE RIGHT PIECES FALL PRECARIOUSLY YET PRECISELY INTO PLACE THAT IS WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO MAKE SOMETHING TRULY AMAZING.
THAT IS WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO TURN AN IDEA INTO GOLD.

THESE ARE THE ELEMENTS OF ADVERTISING.
Elements of Advertising 1
On behalf of the Columbus AAF Board, we’d like to thank the entrants and supporters of this year’s local American Advertising Awards. Through this competition, we celebrate our vibrant advertising community and honor the year’s biggest ideas and brightest minds in Central Ohio.
A thousand thanks go out to the ADDY co-chairs (Scott Baldner, Ruth Payne, Jackie Robles and Dave Sonderman) and our club Executive Director, Kelly O’Brien. This team worked tirelessly over the last eight months to run the competition and design and execute tonight’s program. More thanks go to our sponsors who contributed their services, space and cash in support of AAF. None of this would be possible if not for the volunteers and board members who devoted countless hours to market, coordinate and plan this year’s competition.
Each year we look for ways to make the American Advertising Awards better, more engaging and more relevant. This year, in addition to a new venue, we are excited to debut a Local Only category—Pride of Columbus. Through this category, we seek to honor local clients and home-grown work in any medium, as well as encourage more student participation in the competition. 100% of the entry fees in the Pride of Columbus Category will fund a scholarship to underwrite the cost of student entries next year.
We should all be proud to be part of the Central Ohio creative community. So tonight, let’s celebrate our collective efforts. Grab a cocktail, catch up with friends and view the best of this year’s work.
Enjoy!

PAM LONGAZO ANDERSONPurdue University
After graduating from Purdue University, Pam began as an Art Director in Chicago. At Leo Burnett Worldwide, she worked on Kellogg’s, Max Factor, Marlboro and Miller—finding herself the only female creative on the Miller Lite account. As a Creative Director/Partner at J. Walter Thompson, she helped craft campaigns for Kraft, Nestle and the creative that won the pitch for Dell Computers—a spot with a remarkably realistic CGI elephant that hopped his way across London’s Westminster Bridge. Along the way she added McDonald’s, Home Depot and pharma brands. And now full circle: working in higher ed marketing for her alma mater.
GEORGE GOETZBona Fide Creative
George has had success at many highly respected advertising agencies. At MMB in Boston he helped Subway become the largest fast food chain in America. He also led teams on the Harvard Business School brand, join.me collaboration software, Ken’s Steakhouse Salad dressings, and more. Before MMB, George made a name for himself at Mullen, creating the LendingTree brand from scratch, now the undisputed online lending leader. At Hill Holliday, he created award-winning work for Lotus Software, Rolling Rock Beer and Dunkin’ Donuts. He’s lucky enough to have had his name called at Cannes, Clio and The One Show. Two of his commercials are in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in New York.
DOLLY VUDigitasLBi
Dolly is a Lead Experience and Interface Designer at DigitasLBi in Chicago, and has been with the company for more than four years. Prior to Digitas, Dolly worked in e-commerce designing sites and mobile apps. Under the Publicis Group connection, she is currently teaming up with Leo Burnett to help form a solid digital process by incorporating UI animation, prototyping and user testing. Outside of work she enjoys baking French Macarons and other pastries. And also has two adorable kittens.

THIS IS FOR THE FOUNDERS WHO USED THEIR VAST RESOURCES TO BUILD THRIVING INDUSTRIES AND VITAL INSTITUTIONS
ONE, AN INDUSTRIAL TITAN.ONE, A BANKING MAGNATE.BOTH, FOUNDERS. Andrew Carnegie, a self-made industrialist,
entrepreneur and philanthropist, believed profoundly in the value of learning in transforming human lives and communities. He founded Carnegie Technical Schools to bring educational opportunity to the children of working-class Pittsburgh residents.
Andrew Mellon was a Pittsburgh banker, venture investor and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury who, with his brother Richard, financed the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research based on his conviction that advances in knowledge were the true foundation of future prosperity.
These founders of institutions of higher learning fostered inventive thinking and advanced humanity—and 50 years ago, their legacies converged when Andrew’s son, Paul Mellon, proposed a merger to form what we now know as Carnegie Mellon University, setting the stage for the greatest minds in the world to become founders here, too.

TheCreativeEgoA closer look.
Laser-Focused Vision The limited ocular system of most egos is capable of recognizing only shiny, new, custom-inscribed objects.
Praise ReceptorsThe ego’s highly selective audial apparatuses blocks negative feedback and locks onto positive sentiments.
Conveniently ADDY-shaped Nourishment ReceptacleThe ego’s voracity stems from an accelerated metabolism guided by an insatiable thirst for recognition at local, regional, and national levels.
Toe-Stepper-On-ErsThe ego will stop at nothing to achieve greatness in any form, using its unusually flat and scaly feet to eliminate adversaries.
Elephant-like EpidermisThe ego’s outer layer of skin can often resemble that of a pachyderm, providing a near-impenetrable barrier against both scorn and charm alike.
Balls (Male or Female) In its quest for constant approval and appreciation, the ego often knows no limits to its testicular/ovarian fortitude.
A smaller, more feral version of you. Some are well fed. Some are emaciated.
They all bruise easily and each requires constant care and feeding.
Most cannot be completely controlled and, at times, can be downright dangerous.
Egos think only of themselves and their rapacious hunger for accolades of all sizes and substrates. Needless to say, these wayward creatures of the soul think only of themselves and their insatiable hunger for accolades.
They are often found squirreled away under the desks of hard-working creatives, nesting in lost tissues and Jimmy John’s wrappers.
Caffeine Intake Valve Egos demand sources of near-constant energy in liquid form.
Digital Warning SystemAn outstretched middle finger is often the ego’s sole means of communication with others of its kind.

part of our CCAD Survival Guide.
SURVIVAL GUIDES
Want to crush it in the real world? You’ll want to take a variety of classes. Business classes are a must for any budding entrepreneur, photography comes in handy for project work — if you can take photos yourself, you don’t have to hire someone else to capture your vision — and graphic design offers you the tools needed to cultivate your personal brand. Plus, you can learn how to create a beautiful website and show yourself off to the professional world.
Thanks to an emphasis on real-world applications, the Interior Design curriculum prepares you for jobs and internships by arming you with the know-how to present your work professionally. You’ll learn AutoCAD, Photoshop, Revit, and SketchUp Pro for renderings and InDesign for project presentations. “As a student, it helps to understand what professionals are expecting and how to create work at that level,” says Tara Kursinsky (Class of 2019). “This is what the pros are using, so these computer skills are definitely a requirement if you want to be successful in the industry.”
The way we design our environments matters more than ever, and in the Interior Design program at Columbus College of Art & Design, you’ll find the facilities, tools, and faculty to make your design dreams reality.
Professor of Interior and Industrial DesignMS in Education, University of DaytonBFA in Industrial Design, Columbus College of
Art & Design
Joel Gundlach won the 2016 CCAD Outstanding Faculty Award. He has taught Industrial Design and Interior Design classes for almost three decades, and he enjoys helping students elevate
their craft. A freelance furniture designer, Gundlach’s clients include the Columbus Foundation and Columbus Museum of Art.
Much of my practice is designing and fabricating custom furniture and cabinetry.
As a maker, I love all the resources and shops that are available. You can get just about anything here.
I love being on the water in one of our old restored wooden boats.
Assistant Professor and Department Chair for Interior Design
MFA in Design Research with a specialization in University Teaching, The Ohio State University
BArch in Architecture, Iowa State UniversityWhen Kelly DeVore discovered smaller-scale projects encompassing interior design and branding, she found that the collaboration and social impact within those projects had special resonance with her. DeVore teaches upper-level interior design research courses, a course on Designing for Social Change, and a class for our MDes program. She believes that by understanding communities and having empathy toward people, designers can better impact the human experience.
I am passionate about social practice research and present at conferences as much as I can. I also design spaces for DEV Design and Development, which I own with my husband.
I love all the volunteer opportunities that are available in Columbus — the community really cares!
I love wandering around a farmers market or going down to Hocking Hills – both nature and delicious food really inspire me.@ccadedu

You’ll learn how — and why — to make the right design choices, which is key to creating user-friendly, sustainable, and human-centered design. And once you understand how things are assembled and constructed, you’ll make better decisions as a designer. From footer to roof and everything in between, hands-on building construction classes take away the mystery behind the drywall, while sustainability and user-experience courses ensure that you consider the human factor first. In short, you’ll have a direct impact on people.
Like an architect, you’ll learn how to identify what a client needs to create a comfortable, engaging, and appropriate space. Those skills are a priority. Design is all about making the world a better place, and by questioning how spaces, products, and buildings can serve a better function, or be more beautiful and useful, you’ll be solving problems — not just designing for design’s sake.
You’ll dive into design quickly your first year with projects like Intro to Design, which features an emphasis on professional presentation skills, and Collaboration in Design, which teaches you how to work together. (Designers rarely work alone. Squad goals.) From the beginning, you’ll learn how to ask the questions that might uncover solutions and solve big problems.
