The Series “The User and the GEOSS Architecture”

• Objectives– Focus on broad range of users and regional issues– Educate about GEOSS – user approach and architecture

(structure)– Through interaction with users, get feedback on their needs –

for data, information and infrastructure– Create continuing interactions/follow-ons including training

and case studies

• Status– Two workshops have been completed– Follow-on ideas are being developed and tested– Additional workshop are in planning

Workshop Format Overview

• The workshops have a regional focus• Typical duration is 1-2 days – 1.5 days works well• Three core GEOSS presentations include a GEO

overview, architecture and user interface• User presentations focus on two topics of regional

importance – selected by local organizers• Workshops are sponsored by GEO participating

organizations and members; fees are minimized to encourage participation

• Attendance, typically 60 participants, includes users, GEO representatives and members of the Earth Observation community

A&D meeting, Paris 2-3 March 2006

Recommendations - workshop I

• Open, organic, flexible architecture incorporating the need for long term planning

• continuity and comparability of data and information• Data rescue – long term archive with a common standard of

historical data – • Shared resources (e.g., super computers) – coalesce regional

interests into shared systems • risk management through redundancy • Ability to integrate different sources of data, temporally,

spatially and spectrally• common terminology and definitions• interoperability rules compatible with existing systems• knowledge of control and data quality including metrics and

standards for quality

A&D meeting, Paris 2-3 March 2006

Recommendations - workshop II

Similar to previous workshop plus:

• Taylor to regional needs and skill levels

• Data delivery: The distribution architecture must account for the difficulty associated with communication networks in Africa. Three components of data delivery require consideration: 1) Data distribution (mechanisms) 2) Packaging (standards) 3) Dissemination

• In Situ data is a pivotal component of the GEOSS architecture.

• Metadata is important but not always available, especially in the African context

• Architecture must allow outreach and capacity building
