In cambio però Pechino vuo-

Ma dal 1 novembre afargli concorrenza scende incampo «Top of the Rock» (La
ne c'è una vista spettacolareproprio dell'Empire State Buil-ding».

ket has one. Be specific andknow who you want to targetand where they travel from.
Chris Szalay, director, mar-keting and tourism for NorthPark Management Company inDallas, takes a methodicalapproach. “As soon as I accept-ed this position I researched allthe leisure travel into Dallas, looking at the feeder marketsand which segments generatedthe most business,” she said. “I then looked at the percentageof business travel as well as thebreakdown of group versus FIT(foreign independent traveler)business.” Szalay develops abalanced tourism marketingplan with short, medium andlong-term programs. Tourism isa long-term commitment, butas she points out, “Senior man-agement does not alwaysunderstand that, so I balancemy programs with some three-to six-month group travel pro-grams from “pre-formedgroups” such as church groups, organizations, bank travelgroups, etc.”
Kathy Anderson, presidentof AZ Travel Marketing andtourism consultant to TheRouse Company and FashionShow in Las Vegas, also ana-lyzes arrival trends and fore-casts of domestic andinternational inbound marketsto a destination one year inadvance. “This year-out analy-sis helps us focus on how bestto maximize ROI with limitedtrade show budgets so we canbuild the trade show costs intothe following year’s budget. Yetwe still maintain flexibility incase of unexpected industrychanges and opportunities,” sheexplained.
TOURISM MARKETING
Because HurricaneFrances pounded Florida justdays before La Cumbre andHurricane Ivan was on its way, many delegates were uncertainif the show would still takeplace. The La Cumbre websitekept delegates informed, pro-viding alternative contact num-bers since widespread powerand phone outages disruptedservice throughout Florida. Byopening night everything wasback to normal.
According to Rick Still, industry VP/the Americas,Reed Travel Exhibitions andmanaging director, La Cumbre,“It was critical that this showhappen at this time because theLatin market is coming back.”He said the tour operators wereanxious to participate, even if itmeant sending an alternativedelegate from an office closer toOrlando.
The 15th Annual La Cum-bre was three days of scheduledbusiness appointments, semi-nars and networking opportuni-ties for buyers/planners andsuppliers/exhibitors throughoutthe Americas. Each year theshow typically hosts 400 sup-plier companies (hotels, attrac-tions, airlines and shoppingcenters) and 350 buyers (tour
operators) representing 27countries.
The Latin market is finallycoming back to the US after9/11. In 2002, Latin Americaand the Caribbean representedover 13 million arrivals andcontributed over $20 billiondollars to the US economy. LaCumbre 2004 delegates wereexpected to conduct nearly $1.5billion in business during theshow. The US Department ofCommerce says the LatinAmerican region accounts for32% of international arrivals tothe US, with Mexico represent-ing 75% of the business, or 10million visitors.
Prior to 9/11 the Latin mar-kets were huge for the shoppingcenter industry in specific mar-kets because these shoppersspend four to five times asmuch as the domestic market.
Still’s advice to shoppingcenters participating in hisshow: “First, analyze the ethnicpopulation in your market, because so much of LatinAmerican travel is VFR (visit-ing friends and relatives). Next, have a vision and commitmentfrom senior management andthe staff and resources to pursuethe market.”
The shopping center
industry’s participation in tradeshows is a recent phenomenoncompared to the hotel, attrac-tions and airline industries.Credit for participation should,in part, be given to Shop Amer-ica Alliance. Because theycould share a booth with ShopAmerica, for the first timeshopping centers were able toparticipate and receive the ben-efits without having to designand staff their own booth. Thisgave them first-hand experi-ence in how to work and maxi-mize trade show attendance.
Selecting the Appropriate ShowsSo how can you best take
advantage of trade show oppor-tunities? Select only the mostappropriate shows for your cen-ter or company. Start by findingout what shows your DMO(destination marketing organi-zation, such as your CVB)attends. Do your research. What are your top markets?Focus on shows that target justthose. As La Cumbre is for theLatin markets, Pow Wow is forall the international markets,World Travel Market is for theUK market, and the list goeson.
Next, what type of visitordo you see at your center? Is itmostly group travel? Then con-sider NTA, National Tour Asso-ciation (see article fromJONESREPORT January2004) or ABA, American BusAssociation. The meetings andconventions groups have theirown trade shows.

Are you visiting the top of the Rockefeller?
Are you going to the "Top of
the Rock"?
One of the best views in New
York City - at the top of the
Rockefeller Center in
Manhattan - reopened to the
public on Tuesday after almost
20 years.
The unveiling of the
observation deck has
generated excitement among
New Yorkers and tourists alike
as it is the first major tourist
attraction - at such a high
altitude at least - to be
unveiled in the city since the
9/11 attacks.
Are you visiting the
observation deck? If so, we would like to hear what you
thought of it and see your still and moving images of the
view. Send us your details and experiences using the

Your comments:
I returned back from New York on Sunday the 30th October
after an amazing trip to the states. One of the highlights was
the trip to the Rockefeller centre as it was free and showed
amazing views of New York City. The best place in the world
is New York, simply amazing!
Paul Aldridge, Birmingham, UK
I'm glad to hear that the Rockefeller Center is open to the
public again. A great place to see the "Big Apple" from, as I
had the opportunity to do so 20 years ago. A must see for
any tourists.
Tariro Mkondo, Marimba Park, Zimbabwe
For years, this was where I took out of town friends when
they wanted to see New York from above. By far the best
view, especially to the North. I was saddened when they
closed it, but am very happy now that it has re-opened. In
the 70's I could point out the Empire State Building and the
Chrysler Building, and then point to the twin towers and say
"and there are the boxes they came in".
H Shears, New York City, UK
