Question: Why does myhearing aid whistle?

Answer: If the hearing aidis in your ear and not turnedon, it is normal to hear awhistle sound. Sound escapesfrom the ear canal around theear piece, is picked up by thehearing aid microphone, andcauses the hearing aid tosqueal or whi stle. This iscommonly c alled feedback.

If the hearing aid is in yourear this is not normal. The feedback or whistle maybe caused by several reasons.

1. There may be wax build-up in your ear ca-nal. The wax then becomes like a wall that soundhits and feedbacks into the microphone.

2. The hearing aid may be defective. This couldbe due to a mechanical defect and should be re-paired.

3. The hearing aid fits poorly. The hearing aidmust be snug in your ear in order for the soundnot to feedback into the microphone.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

Treat Injuries to Teeth, Mouth, Jaws

and Facial Structures

At the hospital, the injured patient will

be seen by several medical personnel,

one of whom will probably be an oral

and maxillofacial surgeon. Some smallertraumatic events can be taken care of in

the office. Oral and maxillofacial sur-

geons are specifically trained to repair

injuries to the mouth, face and jaws.

Treating Facial Injury

Common types of serious facial injuries

treated by oral and maxillofacial surgeons

are fractures of the lower jaw, upper jaw,

teeth, palate, cheekbones, or eye sock-

ets. Because these injuries can affect

your sight and the ability to breathe,

speak and swallow, treatment often re-

quires hospitalization.

The oral and maxillofacial surgeon treats

facial fractures in much the same way an

orthopedic surgeon treats a broken arm

or leg. The broken parts of the bone

must be lined up (reduced) and held in

position long enough to allow them time

to heal. This may require six or more

weeks of healing depending on the

patients age and the fractures complex-

ity.

When maxillofacial fractures are com-

plex or extensive, the oral and maxillo-

facial surgeon will surgically expose the

bones and using a combination of wiringor plating techniques, reposition the frac-

tured portions. The type of technique

used by the surgeon depends on the lo-

cation and severity of the fracture.

Where a break has occurred in the up-

per or lower jaw, for example, metal

braces may be fastened to the teeth with

rubber bands or wires used to hold the

jaws together.

Patients with few or no teeth may need

dentures or specially constructed splints

to align and secure the fracture. During

facial injuries are caused by a sports mishap, motor vehicle accident,

on-the-job accident, an act of violence or an accident in the home.

with other doctors or specialists as

needed.

Dont Treat a Facial Injury Lightly

While not all facial injuries require hos-

pitalization, a good rule of thumb is not

to take a facial injury lightly. Every fa-

cial injury affects an area of the body

that is critical to breathing, eating, speak-

ing and seeing. Even in the case of a

moderately cut lip, the expertise of the

oral and maxillofacial surgeon is indis-

pensable. If sutures are needed, place-

ment must be precise to avoid scarring

and to bring about the desired cosmetic

result.

Prevention the Best Policy

Because avoiding injury is always the

best policy, oral and maxillofacial sur-

geons advocate the use of automobile

seat belts, protective mouth guards, and

appropriate masks and helmets for ev-

eryone who participates in sports or ath-

letic pursuits. You dont have to play atthe professional level to sustain a seri-

ous head injury.
