Background
April 27, 1975: Greenpeace launched the worlds first anti-whaling campaign from the docks in Vancouver. This became known as the "Save The Whales" movement.
Bob Hunter: Greenpeace founder and first president of the environmental movement.
Paul Spong (expedition leader): scientist who got the Greenpeace movement involved in the whaling issue in 1975
Founding/ Founders
● Ohana Kai (Hawaiian for “family of the Sea”): -biggest vessel GreenPeace had to confront other ships-the first fully-owned environmental confrontation ship in history- target: any ship that was harvesting whales of any kind
● Every confrontation was documented ● Every document was released to the public causing a global stir that fed
the growing international call for an end to whaling
Confrontation on Sea
● 1982 International Whaling Commission placed indefinite moratorium on commercial whaling
● Countries that didn’t participate in commercial whaling started joining commission in 1970’s
● Some countries continue commercial whaling● After a successful tour of campaigning, the Ohana Kai finally became a
floating anti-whaling museum in San Francisco Harbor and was retired in the mid 80’s.
