PROJECT DEFINITIONUnder the deregulated Turkish electricity supply arrangements, Intergen, a partnership of Bechtel and Shell joined forces with the Turkish ENKA Group to bid for three power plants to be managed on a Build Own Operate base with all power produced to be sold to TEAS, the Turkish Electricity Authority for the first 20 years. Adapazari located at about 150 km southwest of Istanbul has a 770 MW block with two GE Type 9FA gas turbines, a tri-pressure reheat steam cycle using HRSG’s designed by CMI and supplying a 260 MW steam turbine. It was constructed alongside a 1540 MW combined cycle being built by the same Group on a neighboring site with which it shares certain common facilities. Design of both plants pays strict attention to environmental conditions regarding gas, liquid emissions and noise; the hyperbolic dry cooling towers are a prominent feature of each site.

THE CONTRACTIn 1997, the Intergen/Enka Group was awarded the right to develop power plants at three sites and awarded a contract to GE for two gas turbines at Adapazari. The two HRSG’s were awarded to CMI in June 1999 and two steam turbines to Alstom. CMI HRSG’s are of modular design with all pressure parts fabricated in Europe; the erection was realized by local companies under CMI supervision.

PLANT OPERATIONCycling load operation dispatched by TEAS to whom all the power is sold.

GAS TURBINE• GE Type PG9351FA• ISO rated 255.6 MW on natural gas• Site rated at 220 MW on gas at 30°C • Fuel: Natural Gas

HEAT RECOVERY STEAM GENERATOR• CMI Vertical, Assisted-circulation design, unfired• Full flow bypass to condenser at each pressure level • Three output pressures with reheat to steam turbine• Stack 80 meters high• High seismic UBC zone 1
