• John wants his hearers, to have absolute assurance of their salvation

• The basis of their salvation is found only in Jesus and in what Jesus has done for them

A. Why is it so important for Christians to know that their sins are forgiven? I John 2:12, Act 5:31

• We overcome because Christ overcame

• His victory is our victory

B. What assurance has been given to us that we will be victorious against sin? I John 2: 13, 14

RENOUNCE THE LOVE OF THE WORLD

• Renounce the world of sin

• We need to stay away from the things of the world that keep us from having a saving relationship with God

A. How are we to love people and yet not love the world, when the world is primarily, people? I John 2:15

LOVE FOR THE WORLDLOVE FOR THE WORLD

• John mentions three things: (1) the lust of the flesh, (2) the lust of the eyes, (3) the pride of life

• The “pride of life” implies independence from God

B. What does it mean to love the world? I John 2:16
