Two years ago Elizabeth Philbin moved to Crested Butte looking to expand her skills working outdoors with people who have disabilities. Elizabeth participated in the Adaptive Sports Center intern program and is now a professional instructor for both the summer and winter seasons. She is a go-to guide for skiing, snowboarding, canoeing and kayak programs. What were you doing before you moved to Crested Butte? I went to Michigan State University and received my degree in kinesiology with a focus on adaptive physical activity. While I was in college I worked with Oakland County in Michigan for four years and was an instructor for adaptive golf, tennis and racquetball. I was also involved with the Michigan Victory Games, an annual athletic competition for people with cerebral palsy.

What makes Crested Butte a great summer destination? Crested Butte is magical in the summer. The weather is always nice and there is an amazing sense of community. Everyone is outside all the time and it feels like I’m in a postcard.

How do you guarantee a successful adventure as an instructor? I always think ahead. Safety and organization are critical and it is important to anticipate what is going to happen before it actually does. Having a complete understanding of the weather, terrain and the activity is a must.

I also have a real passion for where I work and creating the perfect environment for participants to challenge themselves so they can see the possibilities are endless.

Where do you see the adaptive sports industry in the future? I can’t wait to see where the adaptive industry is in just five or ten years and I plan on being a part of it. As people see the therapeutic benefits sport can have on people, I can see it becoming a more traditional therapy option. If more research could happen that shows its benefits, programs would be more affordable and there would be more options in rural communities.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT

SUP PILOT PROGRAMThe Adaptive Sports Center will be launching its stand up paddle (SUP) pilot program this summer. The program will be in partnership with Western State University in Gunnison, Colo., and a limited number of lessons will be available at Lake Irwin and the Blue Mesa Reservoir. SUP boards are similar to surf boards, and with a paddle, riders glide on calm water, touring the crystal clear lakes around Crested Butte. SUP isn’t a sport for participants looking for three second thrills, as our tours will range from being a few hours to full day trips.

ASC instructor Sara Burnett traveled to Texas in April to join long-time ASC participant Julie Maloukis for an afternoon of SUP.

“I had a blast. It was much easier to paddle than a kayak,” said Maloukis, an active bi-skier and downhill biker at the ASC. “We were out there for two hours and I can’t wait to do it again.”

DOWNTOWN FACILITY UPDATE

The Adaptive Sports Center is kicking off the summer with the launch of its new summer center at 325 Belleview Ave. in downtown Crested Butte. The building purchase was made possible through a significant donation by an anonymous donor that was matched with a challenge grant, and contributions by individual supporters.

The facility will be going through various structural improvements this summer and fall to make it fully wheelchair accessible, including the widening of doorways throughout the building, and the addition of an elevator. Its location on the town bus route makes getting to the facility easy. Summer programming and participant outfitting out of the new center will begin

in June. The building will also serve as the organization’s new hub for intern housing

and equipment and vehicle storage.

The center at the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort will continue to be the winter headquarters and office for administrative staff.

Five accessible lodging options in Crested Butte

After Scott Pruett sustained a spinal cord injury in 1999, he was disappointed to see that accessible lodging options were extremely limited when he would travel. Small towns like Crested Butte appeared to have even fewer options without any major hotel chains. When visiting Crested Butte, Scott and his wife Sarah realized there were many accessible lodging options, they just weren’t easy to find while preparing for their trip 2,000 miles away. During the past year, the Pruett’s worked with the Adaptive Sports Center to identify dozens of high-quality, accessible hotels, condos and homes in Crested Butte. Photos, videos, measurements and booking info were compiled and are now

available at cbaccessibility.com for Adaptive Sports Center participants. The new website also lists accessible dining and shopping options. In an effort to make local establishments more accessible, low-cost ideas are provided for business owners to help create more opportunities for people with disabilities. After completing the project with the Adaptive Sports Center, the Pruett’s launched Universal Design Partners, a business that promotes the natural integration of accessible characteristics into the design of places, products, and programs to make things user-friendly, or “welcoming” for the greatest number of people.

This fully accessible house has an elevator servicing all three floors. There is plenty of room for multiple wheelchair users to stay throughout this home and it has a large gathering area downstairs for people to make meals and relax.

Beds/Baths: 3/3.5

THE FEEDBACKThe Nuke is built for everyone and provides a steady ride that inspires confidence. Steering is easy as riders use both the crankset and handlebars. The recumbent style seating makes this rig comfortable for long rides and sets it apart from the rest of the bike fleet. Riders can also adjust the seat multiple ways, making this an ideal bike for riders of any size. Bottom Line: The Nuke will climb like a mountain goat and also takes the punishment of an epic downhill track on Mt. Crested Butte. “The Nuke provides a more universal option for adaptive mountain biking.” - Chris Read, ASC Program Director

THE FEEDBACK

In collaboration with the Active Force Foundation, the Adaptive Sports Center is the premiere program in

the country with 4cross downhill bikes in its fleet. Athletes ride the chairlift on Mt. Crested Butte

and then transfer onto the gravity propelled rig, no pedaling needed. Riders can rip through rolling terrain and charge rocks and roots with confidence. Each of the four wheels has its own suspension and disc brake, making the bike the gold standard for bumps, handling and a sweet ride.

Bottom Line: The closest thing to skiing Crested Butte in the summer.

“The go-to bike for anyone over the age of ten who has a TBI, SCI or amputation.”

Jeff Perambo, ASC Equipment and Vehicles Manager

THE FEEDBACK The Bomber is an advanced bike for the advanced rider. The bike is best for strong participants with a mid to lower level spinal cord injury, or similar ability who can operate the chest-steering system. Twenty-four inch wheels give ample clearance for the gnarliest terrain and stream crossings, and the addition of rear suspension has greatly improved the overall comfort and downhill capability. Bottom Line: Riders who are able to control the Bomber will find it a challenging but rewarding experience.

“A great way to explore previously inaccessible terrain and even conquer some trails that leave stand-up riders pushing their bikes.” Pat Addabbo, ASC Program Supervisor
