RABBI'S MESSAGE

After a two-year stint at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Washington D.C., a college-mate of mine elected to attend law school instead of his alternative option, a research program in electrical engineering. In justifying the decision to his more scientifically-inclined associates, he was wont to quip: “Law school has a beginning, a middle, and an end” (emphasis his). At the risk of getting sued for trademark non-compliance – in case my friend registered his expression with his former employer – we might describe the month of Adar as being “a beginning, a middle, and an end.” If, as per the Torah and Talmud, Nisan is considered the first month, then Adar – the month just before Nisan – perforce must be the twelfth and last one. Indeed, four times in the Megilla that we will read on Purim do we explicitly encounter this characterization: “the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar” (Esther 3:7, 3:13, 8:12, 9:1). Adar, however, is also a middle. When we reckon the year as per the more common convention as starting with Rosh Hashana in Tishrei, it emerges that Adar is the midpoint. In a Jewish leap year like the present one, there is exactly the same number of weeks from the previous New Year to Purim as there is from Purim until the next one. Yet, perhaps most surprisingly, Adar is a beginning. Tractate Shekalim (1:1) delineates those activities conducted during the month of Adar: In addition to the de rigeur reading of the Megilla on Purim, there was collecting funds for the Temple, enforcing agricultural laws, maintaining the roads, preparing the mikvaot, marking previously unidentified graves, and more generally, osin kol tzorkhei rabim – “tending to all the communal needs”. After the winter season which at best was downtime - a distraction from meaningful advancement – and more often a cause for physical and even spiritual disrepair - Adar was the opportunity to make the necessary corrections, and then forge ahead with a new agenda of goals and targets for the upcoming year.

RABBI'S MESSAGE (CONTINUED)

At Young Israel at New Hyde Park, we can reflect on the past year - whether defined from Nisan or Tishrei - and take pride in our collective achievements: a magnificent renovation of our sanctuary; the ceremonial groundbreaking and progressing construction of our mikvah; a Siyum of Avoda Zara, following thirty months of study, and as part of Nach Yomi and Daf Yomi, also of Sifrei Neviim and Seder Nezikin. We have been fortunate to host scholars-in-residence, an outreach-training seminar, and several Yismichu and Yachad Shabbatons. YINHP publications now include a holiday Torah journal Bikurei Torah – with the articles written by our members - to complement our seasonal newsletter Hear YI, weekly bulletin The Park Page, and annual Book of Remembrance. Our ongoing adult and youth programming recently featured two special events in January, a Tu Bishvat workshop for the children and a challah-baking practicum for the ladies, as part of our series on “Enhancing the Shabbat experience.” We are also proud of our communal involvement, particularly our leadership role in the Yom Hashoah program and hosting the semi-annual Tri-Community Blood Drive. With the arrival of Adar, we also look forward to the upcoming holidays of redemption – Purim and Pesach – but also to our annual journal dinner honoring Rita and Selig Lenefsky and Paige and Eric Finkelstein, the opening of Mikveh Yisrael of New Hyde Park, and our eventual Siyum on Tanakh and the Talmud. May we merit the realization of the words of the Mishna, “With the onset of Adar, we proliferate our joy” … by experiencing Adar as an end, a middle, and especially as a beginning.

Happy Purim to you and your families!

Lawrence Teitelman

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FOOD CERTIFICATES

Food certificates are a wonderful and simple way to help raise funds for the shul's capital improvements. Each member family has an annual obligation to purchase certificates in the following amounts: Single: $600 Family: $1,200 Senior Single: $500 Senior Couple: $1,000 Those who don't meet their obligation will be charged 5% of that amount. Gift cards are available for our area's three major supermarkets, Pathmark, Waldbaums, and Stop & Shop. We also have Mazurs, and A & A. Lastly there are Chesed Dollars that are accepted by many kosher establishments. They can be purchased from Ilene Horowitz , 718-470-9474 Paige Finkelstein 718-343-4821, Art Feldman , 516-227-0707 Marc Horowitz (at the morning minyan), or the shul office. Everybody shops (and eats) so there really is little excuse but to participate in the program, not just to fulfill your obligation, but to make it a habit year round.

Dear Congregants, On behalf of the Executive Board, I would like to wish you a happy Purim. One of the greatest qualities that Klal Israel is known for is the fact that Simcha is part of our daily lives and with this trait we are able to elevate ourselves to higher levels both physically and spiritually. With that said, I am very happy to announce that our Mikveh project has begun. On October 20th, we had the merit of pouring the Mikveh reservoirs and pools, which by itself is considered one of the highlights of building any Mikveh. Of course there is still plenty of work left before the completion of the project, but I believe, with the help of Hashem and with the support of our Congregants and friends, we will get it done and it will be the most beautiful Mikveh for the Northeastern Queens and New Hyde Park area. We have also had many events and projects such as YISMCHU Shabbatons , SEED programs, Kiruv seminars, Blood drive and many lectures and Shiurim in our Shul. I would like to wish a Mazal Tov to our Journal Dinner Honorees, Mr.Selig and Mrs.Rita Lenefsky, and Mr. Eric and Mrs. Paige Finkelstein. The dinner shall be held on Lag Ba'Omer which falls on Sunday, May 22, 2011. Please mark your calendars and send in your ads on time. I look forward to seeing you all in our Shul and at our events. David Rouhani President The YINHP has created a clothing gemach to help needy families in the Queens and Nassau Counties. We are looking for new or gently –used clothes (or hangers) to benefit needy families
