Getting Started
To open MarcEdit, simply click on the MarcEdit Icon on your Desktop orselect MarcEdit from Start/Programs/MarcEdit.
When MarcEdit opens, it will look like the picture below.

Opening the MarcEditor
The MarcEditor can be accessed from two locations. The first byselecting the File/MARC Tools option in the menu and the second byselecting the MarcEditor Icon on the main screen. See the imagesbelow.

MarcEditor Selecting a file
For the purposes of this tutorial, please select example1.mrk. This file is locatedat the following location (using the default installation): c:\programfiles\marcedit\examples\example1.mrk. If you have another file that you wouldlike to use for the purpose of this tutorial, feel free to use that file instead.
Opening the file:
Either select File/Open from the Menu

Initializing the Add Field Dialog
The Add Field function can be initialized by clicking on the Tools/Add Field Menuoption.

Add Field Dialog: Description
The Add field dialog has two arguments:
Select Field: This is the field that you would like to add.
Field Data: This is the data that you would like the field to contain. Please note thatField data includes the indicators (\\) and the subfield data to be added to the field.As noted in the help file, subfield delimiters are noted by using a $. Real dollar signsare noted by using the mnemonic {dollar}

Making the Changes
To globally add a new field, select the field to be added and the data tobe added to the field and then click add field.
When the changes have been made, the program will report the numberof fields added.

Conclusion
Remember, after making edits, you must always remake MarcEdits mnemonicfile format back into MARC to be loading by most electronic catalogs.
Overall, I have tried to make the MarcEditor editing functions as easy to use aspossible. From reading this tutorial, users should now be able to:
