Operations on Fractions

The Addition and Subtraction of Fractions

Remember

1. Change the denominator to a common number, through multiplication.

2. Make sure you multiply the numerators by the same number that you did with the denominators.

3. Apply addition or subtraction to the numerators

4. Be Sure to keep the denominator the same

When adding and subtracting fractions you must also consider

Subtracting a negative

The numerator will move to the right on the number line and become larger

 ()

Adding a negative

The numerator will move to the left on the number line and become smaller

+ ()

What is a mixed number?

It is a number that includes both both a whole number and a fraction!!

You bought 4 large pizzas and each pizza has 8 pieces. Your friend ate  3 pieces of one of the pizzas before you sat down to eat.

How many pizzas are left?

Back and Forth Between Mixed and Improper

Mixed to Improper

Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction.

Add it to the numerator of the fraction.

Improper to MixedDetermine how many whole times the numerator goes into the denominator, that is your whole number.

Find out how many parts the whole number makes up and subtract them from the numerator.

Methods for Adding and Subtracting Mixed and Improper Fractions

Method 1: Change the fractions to improper

once you have performed your operations you can turn the answer back to mixed if you want

Method 2: Combine integers with the integers, and the fractions with fractions.

After you can simplify the answer as required
