THE HISTORY
On hundreds of stickers edged in black attached all over the streets of the city center, the city of Palermo reads the following message for the first time “AN ENTIRE PEOPLE WHO PAYS THE PIZZO IS A PEOPLE WITHOUT DIGNITY”
The following day, all the regional newspapers open with this cover story, the public prosecutors working on investigations regarding extorsion meet up with police forces to try and figure out the authors of the sticker, and the Prefect of Palermo summons the commitee for public order and security composed by the main police authorities and
forces in the prefecture
THE HISTORY During the press conference which followed these events, a representative of the professional association of shop-owners (Confcommercio) declares that a new toll-free number would be available for collecting anonymous reports (another association, Confesercenti, had deactivated one a few weeks before because they never received any calls, unfortunately the new one did non have more success) and the Chamber of Commerce stated that it would create a monitoring committee of the phenomenon of extortion to help shop-owners and business men
The sticker was non signed and every one thought it had been the idea of a shop-owner. However it was the resounding act of seven almost-thirty years old citizens
Among friends, acquaintances and people the seven youths let themselves be found by, the group of Addiopizzo in a few months was formed by about 30 people. Together this group starts an awareness campaign regarding the problem of the pizzo in the city of Palermo

1. THE CAMPAIGN “AGAINST THE PIZZO CHANGE SHOPPING HABITS”
A year after the first stickering, the Comitato Addiopizzo officially presents the campaign “Against the pizzo change shopping habits” and addresses all the citizens and consumers in order to make them sign the “Manifest of the citizen-consumer for legality and development”
“I am a citizen and a consumer aware of my power and my responsibility and I pledge to chose products and services offered by shop-owners, business men and professionals who do not pay the pizzo or who have reported being extortion victims”
The 24th of May 2005 at palazzo Steri, headquarters of the University of Palermo’s rectorate, with Piero Grasso (today the National Anti-mafia Prosecutor) and Pina Maisano Grassi (entrepreneur and widow of Libero Grassi), Addiopizzo presents the first 3500 signatures which are then published in full in the “Giornale di Sicilia”, the main regional newspaper
One year later, the 2nd of May 2006, in the same place, Addiopizzo presents the names of the first 100 shop-owners of Palermo and the surrounding provinces who do not pay the pizzo and declare it publicly thanks to the support of over 7000 citizens who signed the manifest
2. ACTIVITIES IN THE SCHOOLS
Ever since the origins, one of the main activities of Addiopizzo is the promotion of an anti-mafia culture in the schools of Palermo, with the help of judges and shop-owners committed to fighting against extortion
The work in the schools is essential if the objective is to promote a widespread change of mentalities and habits
After a few years of volunteering, from 2007 the school project is financed by the Italian Minister of Education
2. ACTIVITIES IN THE SCHOOLS The main activities are
Meetings and debates in more than a hundred schools in the city of Palermo and the provinces, and dozens of schools in all of Italy
The creation of 22 “Fortifications of Legality” in these schools or permanent anti-mafia garrisons with thematic libraries and video-libraries. These institutions face the various aspects of the criminal phenomenon
The creation and presentation of a statistical research called “Palermo. Vista racket”, a study on the phenomenon of the pizzo based on a questionnaire defined by a sociologist and given to shop-owners by students of the schools
Six editions of the pizzo-free fair characterized by the participation of schools, shop-owners and citizens
A protocol with the regional education office for ethical economics (08/05/2008). The schools which sign this protocol assume the responsibility to acquire school-material from suppliers who do not pay the pizzo or that collaborate with police forces (info on www.addiopizzo.org)
The beginning of a research/Action called “Mettiti gli occhiali” (“Put your glasses on”) to stimulate students to ri-conquer the neighborhoods around their schools
Meetings on the “Quality of consent” and the importance of participated democracy
2. ACTIVITIES IN THE SCHOOLS -ADDIOPIZZO JUNIOR-
Addiopizzo Junior is a committee born in 2006 formed by children and youths who decided to create their own blog to talk about the fight against the mafia and extortions. Their action is inspired by Addiopizzo
They take part in the campaign “Against the pizzo change your shopping habits” by organizing critical consuming events and by convincing family members, friends and acquaintances to purchase in the stores of shop-owners who do not pay the pizzo
They promote an antimafia culture with 5 rap songs on antimafia. With these songs they have participated to various events, including two editions of the presentation of the new school year at the Quirinale, the presidential palace, where the President of the Italian Republic was present
They try to include the Catholic church in the fight against the mafia by meeting the priests of Palermo
3. ANTIRACKET
Libero Futuro (“Free Future”) is the first anti-racket association of Palermo and it was born from Addiopizzo in 2007. It is formed by businessmen who assist and support entrepreneurs who decide to report the pizzo
In less than two years from it’s birth, Libero Futuro has assisted and helped more than one hundered shop-owners and businessmen. The association has permitted shop-owners and businessmen to stop being racket victims with a reduced public and mediatic clamour. This proves that a collective and coordinated rebellion avoids many difficulties and risks. However it is very important that business men and shop-owners consult the association before deciding to report the extortion
The association carries out three fundamental activities
Fight against the solitude of who is victim of an extortion
Define a connection between the victims of racketeering and the public institutions
Guarantee a valid perspective of security
3. ANTIRACKET
13 th of May 2009 - “Patto per la legalità e la sicurezza nei cantieri edili” (Pact for legality and security in construction sites)
The Pact for legality and security in construction sites is presented in Palermo and promoted by Libero Futuro, ANCE (National Association of Construction Companies), Confindustria Palermo, Addiopizzo and FAI (Federation of Italian Anti-racket associations), to prevent extortion and that began with 30 enterprises
20 th October 2008 – “Un futuro Libero per le Imprese” (A free future for enterprises )
An awareness and information campaign on the fight against racketeering. It took place with collaboration of the association Libero Futuro and the ASI Consortium. The project represents an action of prevention, assistance and support to the business men who denounce their extortionists
4. LEGAL OFFICE The activities of Addiopizzo defined the basis for a legal and judicial action without precedents in the history of Italian justice
In 2006 a few of the founding members of Addiopizzo, graduates of law school and lawyers, created the legal office of Addiopizzo. Since then they have pursued important objectives with determination and perseverance
This means proving in courtrooms the efficiency and the concreteness of the contrast strategies thought and developed by Addiopizzo
So far Addiopizzo has been a civil part in about 70 criminal trials and has been recognized the right to a congruous compensation
Furthermore, the legal office legally assists the victims of pizzo and extortion who decide to enter the trial as a civil part, together with Libero Futuro and Addiopizzo. which means exercising the right to receive a compensation
So far the number of mafia extortion victims who have been assisted by the legal office and who have been civil parts are over 40

8. RESPONSIBILITY OF PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS AND PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
November 2007 - In occasion of the presentation of the anti-racket association Libero Futuruo, Addipizzo publicly stated its ideas regarding the sense of responsibility that the political class must assume
“In the fight against the mafia an honest and credible political class is needed. There must not be any difficulty or doubt in excluding border-line or previously condemned for mafia members. Who represents public powers cannot have any sort of relationship with certain figure. Full stop. If Associations like Confindustria, Confesercenti and Confcommercio declare to be ready to expel who pays the pizzo, the minimum that the political parties can do is to operate in the same manner among their members”
January 2008 – In an article published in the newspaper “Repubblica” entitled “The responsibility of the sicilian politician”, Addiopizzo underlined the concept that political responsibility is very different from criminal responsibility
Taking inspiration from the words of the judge Paolo Borsellino, “politics and mafia are two powers that live and control the same territory: or they fight each other or they join”…
“Who governs in Sicily has the obligation to avoid whatever contact that could reveal to be compromised, otherwise they are not at the height of their role. […] It is hard to admit, but an entire people does not take care the quality of consent and is not interested in choosing their representatives who must administer public life, with rigour, then it is a people that has given up its dignity. If our self respect does not convince itself of this then we will never free ourselves from the mafia-client system”

October 2010 – Addiopizzo is a civil part in the trial against a candidate, Antinoro, of the UDC (Catholic Center political party). Antinoro was a candidate for the regional elections of the 13° and 14° April 2008 and he was found guilty of having obtained the promise of 60 votes from members of the criminal organization in exchange for 3000 euros
15 th Ottobre 2011 – The Comitato dei Professionisti Liberi (Committee of Free Professionals) is born
Through a process of auto-foundation, which began in 2010, a new movement is created. This movement is based on professional figures assuming their responsibility in the fight against the mafia, next to the businessmen and shop-owners
A Manifest is written which professionals can sign and must respect in order not to be eliminated from the list

Addiopizzo is an implementing body of the Security Project PON “Consumo Critico Antiracket – diffusione e consolidamento di un circuito di economia per la legalità e lo sviluppo” (Critical Consuming Antiracket – diffusion and strengthening of economic circuits based on legality and development), financed by the Minister of Home Affairs
Addiopizzo is the partner of the of the ITI Vittorio Emanuele III of Palermo of the project Addiopizzo School “Commons vs Cosa nostra”, financed by the MIUR
In 2011 Addiopizzo collaborated for 1 year with 12 volunteers through the National Civil Service
Addiopizzo Community’s touristic project “Sicilia pizzo-free” is financed by the Minister of Economic Development
Addiopizzo has been part of the RISE project which aims at giving job opportunities to underprivileged figures

NETWORKING Over time the strength of Addiopizzo has been in the capacity to keep contacts and define networks which could be useful in the creation of a unique anti-racket movement, which opposes itself to the criminal-political system of power and is slowly becoming motor of a cultural revolution
