Addison Oaks Disc Golf Course Upgrade Update: 12/12/2019 Page 1 The Addison Oaks Disc Golf Course is a 24-hole course located in Oakland County Parks and Recreation's (OCPR) Addison Oaks County Park. In the OCPR's 2018 Disc Golf Survey, it was selected as the second most played course (49% selected Stony Creek Metropark; 46% selected Addison Oaks County Park). The OCPR Commission has identified $35,000 in the fiscal year 2020 budget for an upgrade to the Addison Oaks Disc Golf Course. Final approval by the Commission will be requested in March 2020. The input of disc golfers in 2018 provided important guidance to staff in developing design principles and a proposed layout. For more information about Addison Oaks Disc Golf Upgrade, contact Tom Hughes, Chief of Park Operations at [email protected]. This information is also posted at OaklandCountyParks.com/Planning. We are seeking comment on the proposed design for the Addison Oaks Disc Golf Upgrade. The survey opens on Friday, December 13, 2019 and closes on Monday, January 13, 2020. There are three ways to review the design and provide comment: 1. Online Survey 2. Waterford Oaks Administration Building 2800 Watkins Lake Road, Waterford, MI 48328 3. The workshop was hosted by Oakland County Parks and Recreation in partnership with the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and attended by 49 people. We received a total of 80 surveys online and at the workshop. We are very grateful to the disc golf community for their support of the workshop and their enthusiasm for open dialogue about the sport they are passionate about. Visit OaklandCountyParks.com/Planning to read the full report. The following preferences expressed in the 2018 Disc Golf Survey guided staff in planning the proposed Addison Oaks Disc Golf Upgrade: 18 holes was the course size preferred by more than three quarters of survey respondents. Survey respondents clearly preferred a course environment that provides holes in a variety of wooded and open space settings. Comments gave detail on the merits of both. Hole length over 400 feet was preferred by most survey respondents. However, almost a third of respondents selected “Other”, with their comments indicating the need for a mix of distances. Most of those preferring hole lengths over 400 feet also provided detailed comments, many supporting the need for a mix of distances and indicating that distance is only one factor in designing a good hole. Three quarters or more of survey respondents would like to include the following characteristics in a course: a variety of long and short holes in the same course, dog legs, both long and short tees at each hole, water, and raised or lowered baskets. When asked to list preferred brands and/or styles of baskets, the highest ranked brands were Innova and Discraft. Some expressed support for Michigan companies, mentioning Discraft and MVP by name. Most survey respondents currently pay a fee to play disc golf, either as a park entry fee or a fee to play or both. Most respondents were willing to pay up to $10 to play disc golf but only for courses that were well-designed and well- maintained. When asked what types of amenities are important when playing disc golf, nearly all survey respondents indicated restrooms were important. Picnic tables/benches and convenient parking also ranked high. The importance of trash cans on the course was frequently mentioned in the comments for this question and in the earlier question regarding course characteristics.

The following preferences expressed in the 2018 Disc Golf Survey guided staff in planning the proposed Addison Oaks Disc Golf Upgrade:

18 holes was the course size preferred by more than three quarters of survey respondents. Survey respondents clearly preferred a course environment that provides holes in a variety of wooded and open space

settings. Comments gave detail on the merits of both. Hole length over 400 feet was preferred by most survey respondents. However, almost a third of respondents selected

“Other”, with their comments indicating the need for a mix of distances.

Most respondents were willing to pay up to $10 to play disc golf but only for courses that were well-designed and well-maintained.

When asked what types of amenities are important when playing disc golf, nearly all survey respondents indicated restrooms were important. FACILITY VISION AND DESIGN PRINCIPLES Over the next two years, Addison Oaks Disc Golf Course will be renovated into an 18-hole course with a variety of challenges appropriate to multiple skill levels. While we continue to welcome tournament play, our primary objective is to provide the best possible year-round experience for the visitors to Addison Oaks County Park.

Make improvements within the existing footprint of the disc golf course Convert from 24 holes to 18 holes by combining holes; providing more holes with two tees Identify locations for challenge elements, such as dog legs and raised baskets Identify how adjacent facilities complement the disc golf course: An indoor restroom is located at Adams Lake Lodge and is

open when the park is open. Portable toilets are available seasonally at Buhl Lake Boathouse and at Walker Road Field. Identify potential user conflicts: the practice tee will be relocated due to construction of a new playground; potential

conflict at Hole #1 from throwing discs over the trail Minimize natural resource impacts, e.g. wetlands, oak wilt, erosion, etc. and secure necessary permits The course will be open to disc golfers with entry to the park and with no facility fees in addition to vehicle entry fees Provide a bench at every hole. Metal benches are recommended as the best to resist damage and to clean up graffiti. Wood

benches and picnic tables not recommended Provide a trash can at every hole Provide consistent and strategically placed signage that complies with current brand standards. Provide concrete pads at every tee Replacement of baskets provides an opportunity to increase the variety of experience at the course.
