New York State Releases the K-12 Social Studies Framework
The Board of Regents adopted the New York State K-12 Social Studies
Framework. This framework will drive Social Studies curricular changes
moving forward. The Social Studies department throughout the district
will be examining the framework throughout the summer months and next
school year to determine the action
steps moving forward towards im-
plementation in the Addison Cen-
tral School District.
Overview
New York State K-12 Social Stud-
ies Framework (“NYS Frame-
work”) is anchored in the New York State Common Core Standards for
Literacy and Writing and New York State Learning Standards for Social
Studies. These standards serve as a consistent set of expectations for what
students should learn and be able to do so that we can ensure that every
student across New York State is prepared to be an active and engaged citi-
zen ready to pursue college or a career.
The framework fuses the New York State Learning Standards, key ideas,
conceptual understandings, and content sequences into a single document.
Each course sequence is similar to that of the previous Social Studies Re-
source Guide with Core Curriculum.
Unifying Themes based primarily on the National Council for the So-
cial Studies themes serve to unify ideas and concepts across all grade
levels.
The Common Core Literacy Skills and Social Studies Practices in-
clude the skills and habits of mind that should be developed and fostered
using the content for each grade.
Key Ideas and Conceptual Understandings for each grade level with
supporting Content Specifications are incorporated.
The College, Career and Civic Life Framework notably the Inquiry Arc
is referenced as a curriculum development resource.

Tuscarora Instrumental Music News
Congratulations to all the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade band members for an outstanding spring concert! Mrs. Hamblin is very
proud of each and every one of you!
The band students at Tuscarora, along with Mrs. Hamblin, would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to the Woodhull Com-
munity Band members and Mrs. Kathy Knowles, for performing with us at our spring concert. It was such a great ex-
perience to perform with you all. We thoroughly enjoyed it!
Marching Band season is now upon us! Mrs. Hamblin has scheduled after school marching practices for the following
dates: Thursday, May 22nd (3:00-4:30), Thursday, June 5th (3:00-4:30), Tuesday, June 10th (3:00-4:30) .
***I know a lot of our students also play on sport teams. That is great; my children do as well! Just let me know if the
marching practices conflict with games, etc. I believe that most of the games and practices are later in the evening, so I
am hoping that everyone will be able to attend marching practice. If you would like your child to walk to the field at the end of our practice, please let me know. Thanks! ~ Mrs. Hamblin. *** Memorial Day Parade – Monday, May 26, 2014. Students will need to report to the bus loop at the HIGH SCHOOL
at 9:30AM dressed in their new band shirt and dark pants or shorts. The parade begins at 10:00AM and ends around
10:45-11:00AM at the American Legion. The students may be picked up at the Legion following the parade. ***The stu-
dents need to leave their cases with their parents as we will not be returning to the HS following the parade.
Colonial Days Parade – June 14, 2014. Detailed information about the parade and permission slips will be coming
home soon about this parade. Please save the date!
The Valley Early Childhood School
had an important visitor on May 5th.
Mrs. Hicks from Arnot-Ogden Medi-
cal Center spent the day with the
children explaining how medicine
sometimes looks like candy. She ex-
plained how you should always ask
an adult what it is before eating it.
She brought Twitch and Twiggle to
help tell a story about how Twitch found his grand-
mother’s pills. Mrs. Hicks taught the children a special
saying when
they are not
sure if it is can-
dy or medicine.
“If you don’t
know what it
is, stay away.”
NOTICE THE ADDISON CENTRAL SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL HOLD A SPECIAL MEETING ON MONDAY, MAY 19, 2014 AT 5:00 P.M. IN THE DISTANCE LEARNING ROOM OF THE HIGH SCHOOL TO AWARD THE CONTRACTS FOR THE PHASE II CAPITAL PROJECT.

On April 24th, students in the A-3 program participated in the 2014 Spring SciFair Showcase at the Wings of Eagles Muse-um in Elmira. Kim Seamon, 21st Century A-3 Coordinator, said that Steven Conklin, Da-kota Root, Hadden Crawford, JC Seymour, Bethany Win-dows, and Jordyn Agapito did a wonderful job of presenting their virtual world, which was based on the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Chasetin Crane, Alexis Padgett, and Abriana Frawley-Corwin were also involved in creating the world.
On April 4th , the American Sign Language I and the ASL II classes had the opportunity to go to the ASL Rally in Syra-cuse. Attending were Brittany Bibalo, Kameron Giardina, Tristan Hamblin, Kathryn Morris, Danielle Preston, Kira Rob-bins, Luke Woodard and Mackenzie Woodhouse. ASL is American Sign Language and it is taught in the Distant Learning Room. This class has been offered through GST BO-CES for the past three years. When the students attended the rally they were able to meet their teacher Ms. Aimee Dixon in person for the first time. Ms. Dixon is located in Bing-hamton. They also met the students they have class with eve-ry day. (Hammondsport, Watkins Glen, Tully, Baldwinsville and Cleve Hill ). They were able to use what they have learned all year in class. Voice Off (no talking ,only signing.) NTID (National Technical Institute of the Deaf) came in and did skits; only signing was used. They also involved the students. What a great experience for everyone. Everyone left with new friends, had a great time, and will never forget the great experience they had. Advisor Mrs. Cox said that her club is made up of students who “are very helpful...they have taught me a lot too.”
