311 LIVERPOOL COLLEGE OF CHEMISTRY, Duke-street.-Founder and Principal: Dr. Sheridan Muspratt, M.D. (Hon.), F.R.S. Ed. Assistant and Secretary : Mr. Martin Murphy. The laboratories of the college are open for the reception of students throughout the year ; the sessional term being three months from date of entrance. Medical Scholarships in the University of Durham.—Four Scholarships, of X25 a year, tenable for four years by students pursuing their medical studies in the University or at Newcastle, and not of sufficient standing to proceed to a licence in Medicine. A Scholarship will be awarded in October next. Two resident and two non-resident clinical clerkships and four dresserships are conferred for merit. At the end of each session a Silver Medal and Certificate of Honour will be awarded after exa- mination to the best student in each class. The laboratories are open daily from ten A.M. to five r.M. The students have - every facility for the preparation of all important compounds in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, and for prosecuting Qua- litative and Quantitative Analysis; whilst those who have more leisure are also instructed in the methods and the nature of Chemical Research. Those who attend the laboratories have an opportunity of gaining a knowledge of the Assaying of Ores, and the methods of valuing commercial products. Midwifery, Diseases of the Eye, Insanity and Vaccination - can be specially studied. The Libraries in the College and Infirmary and the Museums of Anatomy, Pathology, and Materia Medica are open daily. UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES, AND MEDICALEXAMINING BOARDS IN SCOTLAND

AND IRELAND.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH.

STATUTES RELATIVE TO GRADUATION IN MEDICINE.

1. Three medical degrees are conferred by the University ofEdinburgh-viz., Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.), Master inSurgery (C.M.), and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) The degreeof Master in Surgery is not conferred on any person who doesnot also at the same time obtain the degree of Bachelor ofMedicine.

2. The preliminary branches of extra-professional educationare English, Latin, Arithmetic, the Elements of Mathematics,and the Elements of Mechanics ; and the proficiency of stu-dents in these branches is ascertained by examination prior to.the commencement of their medical study.

3. No candidate is admitted to a professional examinationwho has not passed a satisfactory examination on at least twaof the following subjects, in addition to the subjects mentionedabove : - Greek, French, German, Higher Mathematics,Natural Philosophy, Logic, Moral Philosophy; and the exa-mination on these latter subjects also takes place before thecandidate has entered on his medical curriculum.

A degree in Arts (not being an honorary degree) in anyone of the Universities of England, Scotland, or Ireland, or inany colonial or foreign University specially recognised for this.purpose by the University Court, exempts from all preliminaryexamination ; and an examination in Arts by any corporatebody, whose examination has been recognised as qualifying forentrance on medical study by resolution of the General MedicalCouncil of the United Kingdom, provided the said examinationby the said corporate body shall be also approved by the Uni-versity Court, shall exempt from preliminary examination inArts, on all subjects comprised in the said examination of thesaid corporate body.

5. No one is admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Medicineor Master in Surgery who has not been engaged in medical andsurgical study for four years.

6. Every candidate for the degrees of M. B. and C. M. mustgive sufficient evidence by certificates-1. That he has studiedeach of the following departments of medical science-viz.,Anatomy, Chemistry, Materia Medica, Institutes of Medicineor Physiology, Practice of Medicine, Surgery, Midwifery andthe Diseases peculiar to Women and Children, and GeneralPathology, each during courses including not less than 100 lec-tures ; Practical Anatomy, six months ; Practical Chemistry,three months; Practical Midwifery, three months ; ClinicalMedicine and Clinical Surgery, each during courses of sixmonths ; Medical Jurisprudence, Botany, Natural History (in-cluding Zoology), during courses including not less than fiftylectures. 2. That he has attended, for at least two years, themedical and surgical practice of a general hospital which ac-commodates not fewer than eighty patients, and possesses adistinct staff of physicians and surgeons. 3. That he has been

engaged, for at least three months, by apprenticeship or other-wise, in compounding and dispensing drugs. 4. That he hasattended, for at least six months, by apprenticeship or other-wise, the out-practice of an hospital, or the practice of a dis-pensary, physician, surgeon, or member of the London orDublin Society of Apothecaries.

7. The studies of candidates for the degrees of Bachelor ofMedicine and Master in Surgery are subject to the followingregulations :—1. One of the four years of medical and surgicalstudy required by Section 5 must be in the University of Edin-burgh. 2. Another of such four years of medical and surgicalstudy must be either in the University of Edinburgh, or insome other University entitled to give the degree of Doctor ofMedicine. 3. Attendance during at least six winter monthson the medical or surgical practice of a general hospital whichaccommodates at least eighty patients, and, during the sameperiod, on a course of Practical Anatomy, may be reckoned asone of such four years. 4. One year’s attendance on lecturesin the hospital schools of London, or in the school of the Col-lege of Surgeons in Dublin, or of such teachers of Medicine inEdinburgh, or elsewhere, as shall from time to time be re-cognised by the University Court, may be reckoned as one ofsuch four years. 5. Candidates may, to the extent of four ofthe departments of medical study required by Section 6, sub-
