1. Description

General The RSS Modification Kit is an optional feature for the BVC-Elevators which sets the slips automatically by a pneumatic assembly. For technical data of the elevator see the B+V Manual Slip Type Elevator BVC 75 - 150.

Function The B+V slip type elevator designs have been enhanced with RSS marking them suitable for running flush, near flush (small upset) and special clearance tubulars, including WT-23/26/31 drill pipe. Manufactured in accordance with API 8C, PSL 1/2. Proof load tested up to 1,5x rated capacity.

RSS feature: Remotely controls setting of the slip assembly. 4 individual air cylinders connected to the slip segments. Can be made available for all manual BVC/BVT and air operated ABVC

elevators. Features: Ability to remotely set the slips

onto tubulars. Eliminates the use of setting

rings. Slips can accommodate non-

marking inserts.

Benefits: Enhanced safety in running

tubulars. Eliminates the need to use lifting

subs on tubulars.

2. Installation / Operation

Lifting and transport WARNING: Lift the BVC Elevator on lifting ears only. WARNING: Wear your personal protection equipment at all times.

Pneumatic functioning of the RSS

If the Three-way-valve of the Control Unit (see Pos.2) switched to Pos.B, the valve applies pressure to the air operated RSS. The four pneumatic cylinders (Pos.1) will be actuated and cause to set the slips. Switch the valve back to Pos.A, the pneumatic cylinders will be lifted and the slip springs raises the slips.

Installation of pneumatic Parts Equip the elevators air supply with a maintenance unit (Lubricator, air regulator, filter) to make sure that devices operate with clean compressed air. An air regulator ensures constant working pressure and guards the pneumatic parts against break down.

3. Operation

Safety Make sure that all pneumatic lines are isolated before any work is carried out in

the BVC-RSS Sliptype Elevator. It is recommended to have the BVC-RSS Sliptype Elevator operated by the

Derrick Man/Floor Man. Tripping in Stab Single Joint of pipe into string at well center Make up the connection Close the BVC around pipe Slowly raise/lower BVC until the slips can be set properly on the pipe

Note: Make sure the slips are not set on the upset of the pipe

Set the slips by actuating the air supply on the control unit to the RSS-cylinders Lower the string in the hole When string is lowered such that a new joint can be added, set the slips in the

rotary table Release the air to the RSS cylinders by switching the valve in the control unit

back Once the BVC slips are raised, the elevator can be opened and the next joint

picked up Tripping out Close BVC around the string Slowly raise/lower BVC until the slips can be set properly on the pipe Set the slips by actuating the air supply on the control unit to the RSS-cylinders Pick up the string weight and raise the slips in the rotary table Trip the string out until the slips in the rotary table can be set

Note: Make sure the slips in the rotary table are properly set

Set the joint(s) back Release the air to the RSS cylinders by switching the valve in the control unit

back Once the BVC slips are raised and the elevator can be opened Lower the BVC down to rig floor to pick up the string again 4. Maintenance and Inspection See Technical Documentation B+V Manual - Slip Type Elevator BVC 75-150
