"HC-7 SEADEVILS" DVD

From: John “Moon” Wilson After looking at the activities, I was wondering if it would be possible, somewhere during the week, we could share the "HC-7 SEADEVILS" DVD with those attending? There are quite a few folks out there, who have not seen the film, or even know of it's existence. I am offering a percentage of any sales, to be donated to the fund for our ready room aboard Midway, and this would be a perfect opportunity to let all hands be a part of that effort. Warmest Aloha's, John "Moon" Wilson ADC (AC) USN, RET ***************************************************************** NOTE: Many HC-7 members viewed Moon’s outstanding DVD in Memphis at the 2004 HC-7 Reunion. It will be shown in the hospitality suite after the after the Friday 19 May MIDWAY – USMC Combat Air Crew Wings presentation. ********************************************************************

Original Seadevil Decal

On 7 August 1968, the chief of Naval Operations approved HC-7’s squadron insignia. ATCS “R””B” KAYS originated and designed HC-7’s insignia, which was selected after a long search for an appropriate theme. HC-7’s insignia has as the central focal point CERBERUS who was acclaimed as one of the most feared creatures in Greek and Roman mythology. Like Cerberus, HC-7 rescue helicopters are guardians of the Gates of Hades (North Vietnam or possible death at sea). The three heads attached to a single body aptly symbolize the three basic missions of the squadron, i.e.; Rescue, Vertical Replenishment, and Utility. The three heads also signify the three models of helicopters assigned to HC-7, which are the Kaman UH-2A/B/C, Seasprite, Boeing UH-46A/D Sea Knight, and Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King. The gold circle surrounding the insignia represents a halo, hence the downed aviators reference to the rescue helicopter as an “ANGEL”.

Combat Aircrew Wings Presentation

This insignia for Aircrew Members was first established during World War II. In 1958 it was re-designated as the Combat Aircrew Insignia. It remains in use by the Marine Corps but was discontinued by the Navy. This was corrected through the efforts of Captain Jeff Wiant USN (Ret.) and RADM Bill Terry USN (Ret.) and has resulted in a most fitting tribute to those crewmen that went in harms way on many occasions as a matter of routine. This is an excerpt from the approval letter. “The Commandant of the Marine Corps (ASM), in response to Chief of Naval Personnel letter 1650 dated 29 Nov 00 has approved, the eligibility for the USMC Combat Aircrew Insignia with one star, for all qualifying personnel as follows:

All Enlisted Aircrewmen that participated in CSAR operations, and met the requirements delineated in paragraph 3310 of MCO 1000.6g, while attached to and serving in HS-2, HS-4, HS-6 and HS-8 from October 1965 to March 1968, HU-1/HC-1 from January 1966 to September 1967 and HC-7 from September 1967 to February 1973.”

At this time the following personnel will be presented their Combat Aircrew Wings on the 19th of May aboard

the USS MIDWAY CV-41 Tom McCann Don West Mike Foley Nick Brake Al “Guppy” Gaynor Edwin Davis (HS-2) James England (HS-2) Ted Roy (HS-2) ATC Taylor (HS-2) Bob Reichard Richard Stone (HS-2)
