Welcome Letter

On behalf of the SSRFC, it is my great privilege to welcome you to Anaheim, California for this year’s Annual Conference! I distinctly remember my first conference in Long Beach just a few miles away. Despite the sunny California weather and the prospect of returning to cold winter winds, I found myself inside for every hour of the conference. It was impossible not to be in awe of the amazing people and ideas brought together by the conference. Thanks to all of you, this conference stands to be even better. So good, in fact, that you will be surprised by how little you notice the weather. This weekend you will be surrounded by people like you who have spent hours studying for exams only to turn around and volunteer their free time by developing fundraising efforts, building community partnerships, and managing clinic workflow. These experiences and the benefits they bring our patients define what it is to be part of a student-run clinic. This weekend is another step in that journey. Take advantage of the Whova app and online conference booklet provided online to discover presentations that interest you. Afterward, use the app to connect with the presenters and others in the room to continue the conversation. The connections will help bring to life the ideas you take home from the conference. For many of you, the conference will be an introduction as you become leaders at your own clinics. We hope the conference plays a foundational role as you build your vision. For others, the annual conference will be one of your last major efforts for student-run clinics before graduating. We thank you for your service and the countless hours you dedicated to our shared cause. Then there are a select few of you who are looking for a way to help nationally. It does not matter if this is your first conference or fifth; you recognize that there is so much potential to improve the student-run clinic movement. If this is you, I strongly encourage you to run for a national SSRFC position, to join a committee, or to simply spend a little time Saturday night representing your school as a voting representative in our elections. Your contributions make an incredible difference. If you have any questions about what role might best fit your interest, please stop me or email me anytime to talk about the opportunities. Thank you for choosing to attend the conference. I wish you all the best as you strive to help your communities achieve better health and access to care.

Rumi Cader, MD – Keynote Speaker Professor of Clinical Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Dr. Rumi Cader is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at

the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He is a

graduate of that same institution, including being

awarded a Masters degree in Public Health, and

completed a fellowship in Medical Education in 2004.

He has always had a passion for providing care to the medically underserved. He

holds a position as Advisory Board Member to the UMMA Community Clinic, a

clinic which he co-founded during medical school to address the needs of a

downtown Los Angeles community that lacked access to primary care. The Clinic

recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and continues the Mission to “promote

the well-being of the underserved by providing access to high-quality healthcare

for all, regardless of ability to pay.”

He has received numerous awards including the Outpatient Faculty Teacher of the

Year Award at Cedars-VA Internal Medicine Program in 2008, an Exceptional

Dignity – Humanitarian Day Award from the Ilm Foundation in 2014.

Dr. Cader lives in South Bay, the same community where he grew up, with his wife

and three sons. When he is not working or spending time with his family, he can

often be found swimming at the beach, cheering his UCLA Bruins football team, or

refereeing youth soccer games.
