Biographies Sercan Akyalcin, Ph.D. Dr. Akyalcin received his training from the Orthodontic Program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Orthodontics program at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. In his career as a dental educator and orthodontist, he has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, seven book chapters, co-authored an orthodontic textbook, and has received many prestigious awards, including the American Association of Orthodontists Full-time Faculty Award and American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Fellowship and Biomedical Research Award. He serves actively on the editorial review board of American Journal of Orthodontics, Angle Orthodontist, and other prominent dental journals. Dr. Akyalcin has been honored as an invited speaker at many national and international meetings. Maryam Amin, D.M.D., Ph.D., M.S. Dr. Amin is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and cross-appointed in the Division of Community Engagement at the University of Alberta. She received her D.M.D. from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences from the University of British Columbia (UBC). She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Health Education and received a certificate in Teaching in Higher Education from the UBC Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth. She is the recipient of a graduate teaching award in 2006, Gibb Award for Scholarly Teaching in 2013, and Tier II Clinical Mentoring Award in 2015. Dr. Amin served as the Division Head of Pediatric Dentistry from 2009-2019. Currently she is Director of Clinical and Population Oral Health graduate program and the principal investigator of the International Children’s Oral Health Research (iCOHR) group with a number of ongoing projects. Her program’s mission is to improve the oral health of children through collaborations directed at prevention, education and advocacy. It’s vision is that, through collaborations and partnerships, all high-risk children of marginalized communities will receive similar oral health care as the general population. Her research team explores psychosocial determinants of oral health, barriers to access to dental care, and feasibility of implementing community-based oral health promotion programs responsive to the unique needs of different societal subgroups. She has been engaged in over 30 funded research projects, which have resulted in more than 60 peer-

reviewed publications and a number of presentations, mainly in the field of children’s oral health.

Fernando Astorga, D.D.S., M.S.

Dr. Astorga is the Director of Lifelong Learning and Continuing Dental Education at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine (CU SDM). He received his dental degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1995, where he attended an AEGD program at the Universidad Santa María, Caracas, Venezuela in 1996. Later he attended a Dental Implant Preceptorship program at the University of Texas-Houston. After completion in 1998, he moved back to his native Venezuela and ran a private practice for nine years while serving as a part-time faculty member. He moved to North Carolina and, in 2013, obtained a certificate and M.S. in Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.

Dr. Astorga joined the faculty of CU SDM in June 2013. He is the Director of Occlusion 1, Treatment Planning, Critical Thinking and Treatment Planning and Case Presentation. He is in charge of the Clinical Photography department, which has 20 digital SLR cameras for students and facult, and is resonsible for training for the students. Dr. Astorga has created three courses and is Co-chair of the iPad for Dental Education Committee, which helps introduce new technologies in teaching during lectures and clinical and preclinical courses. As the Director of Lifelong Learning and Continuing Dental Education, he designs predental activities and courses for high school and college students, focusing on underserved and minority communities to help motivate them to become dental professionals. He also plans and designs continuing education courses for dentists in Colorado and surrounding areas. He has lectured extensively locally, nationally, and internationally at CE events. In 2018 he was elected Secretary of the ADEA ection on Continuing Educationn.

Jennifer Bain, D.M.D., M.S.P.H., Ph.D.

Dr. Bain is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Preventive Sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry (UMMC SOD). She received her dental degree in 2009 from UMMC SOD. She then completed her M.S.P.H. in Clinical Research (2010), Certificate of Residency Training in Periodontology (2012) and Ph.D. in Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine (2014) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Bain joined the faculty at UMMC SOD in 2014. Her primary educational role is to direct the predoctoral didactic and clinical periodontal curriculum. Additionally, she leads an initiative to map and reform the entire predoctoral curriculum. Dr. Bain serves on several institutional committees including Curriculum Committee, Research Advisory Committees, Scholarship Committee, Clinical Advisory



Committee, Faculty Senate, and Radiation and Safety Committee. Extramurally, Dr. Bain is one of UMMC’s ADEA CCI liaisons, a 2017 graduate of the ADEA Emerging Academic Leaders Program, serves a Chair of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF) Educator Scholarship Selection Committee, and is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honors Society. Dr. Bain is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Bain’s accomplishments over the past 10 years include the American Association of Women Dentist Research Scholar Award, AAPF Educator Scholarship, Volpe Prize Winner, Balint Orban Memorial Competition Winner, AAPF Teaching Fellowship, and recipient of student voted teaching awards at UMMC (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018). She was inducted into the Nelson Order for Teaching Excellence at UMMC (2015 and 2016), a recipient of institutional-wide Regions TEACH Prize, American Academy of Periodontology award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics, and the Mississippi Chapter of the American College of Dentists Outstanding Teacher Award. LaToya Barham, D.D.S. Dr. Barham is Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD). She received her D.D.S. from HUCD in 2004 and went on to complete a two-year residency in Pediatric Dentistry at HCUD in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in 2006. In 2008, she obtained Diplomate status by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Barham is also a Fellow of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Barham is a member of ADEA and of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and its local chapters in the District of Columbia and Virginia. She is also a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, National Dental Society, where she was inducted in 2003 as a dental student. Currently, she balances a career as a private-practice clinician in Northern Virginia and an Assistant Professor, where she also serves as the clinical coordinator for predoctoral education. During her tenure as Assistant Professor, Dr. Barham has served as course director and guest lecturer for several predoctoral courses and as a research advisor to numerous postdoctoral pediatric dental residents. She has chartered and currently is an advisor to the student chapter of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and serves as co-advisor for the College of Dentistry’s service sorority, Delta Phi Sigma Sorority, Inc. Dr. Barham has also been published along with her colleagues in various dental journals. Dr. Barham is most proud of having the privilege to develop a pipeline program called H.O.P.E.Yes! for underrepresented minority elementary, middle and high school students that has exposed over 100 African-American and Latino children to careers in dentistry, dental hygiene and allied health sciences since its inception in 2013. In 2018, she presented her research on dental pipelines for underrepresented minority students during the Greater New York Dental Meeting and was a CE lecturer on the topic of “Oral Conditions and the Pediatric Patient” during the North Georgia Dental Society’s Annual Fall Meeting.



Juliana Barros, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Barros is an Associate Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD). She serves as the Director for the Laser Dentistry Clinic, Operative Dentistry I and II. Dr. Barros earned her D.D.S. from the University of Uberaba, Brazil in 1995. She has postgraduate training in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. In addition, she earned a master’s degree in Laser Dentistry from the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute and University of São Paulo, Brazil. She completed the Health Educators Fellowship Program, a certificate program designed to expand the teaching skills and enhance the educational mission at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Dr. Barros lectures and conducts research in restorative dentistry, biomaterials, and hard/soft tissue laser applications. Recognizing great opportunities to advance knowledge and treatment in laser dentistry, she developed the laser dentistry curriculum at UTSD and is the acting director of the laser clinic. She is a member of several organizations, such as the Academy of Laser Dentistry, Academy of Operative Dentistry, International Association for Dental Research, American Dental Education Association, and the Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators. Kathleen Boesze-Battaglia, Ph.D. Dr. Boesze-Battaglia is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine). She is a native of Buffalo, NY and received her Ph.D in Biochemistry from SUNY-Buffalo. Dr. Boesze-Battaglia played an active role in faculty governance, serving as Chair of PDM Faculty Senate and at the University, a member of the President’s University Council Steering Committee and a member of the Senate Executive Committee. During her tenure at Penn Dental, she spearheaded the development of, and currently provides oversight for, the Penn Dental Medicine Honors Program; she also chairs the Committee for Professional and Ethical Conduct. Dr. Boesze-Battaglia has served on and chaired numerous committees within the university and Penn Dental Medicine, including the Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, Committee for Student Advancement, University Disciplinary Hearing Panel, and Committee on Academic Freedom. She continues to be active in CODA accreditation at the predoctoral level in the school. In her role as an educator, Dr. Boesze-Battaglia course directs and lectures in foundation sciences and first- and second-year professional and ethics in dental medicine courses. In addition, she is an active researcher; her NIH-funded research projects focus on molecular mechanisms of lipid homeostasis in epithelial cells and bacterial toxin induced cytotoxicity. Dr. Boesze-Battaglia currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Academic Initiatives at Penn Dental Medicine.



Angela Bruzzaniti, Ph.D. Dr. Bruzzaniti is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD), an adjunct Associate Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the IU School of Medicine, and a member of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health. In addition, Dr Bruzzaniti serves as the Director of Dental Student Research at IUSD and leads several student-centered research programs. Dr. Bruzzaniti received a B.S. with honors in biochemistry from La Trobe University and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Melbourne, Australia. She subsequently completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and was an Associate Research Scientist at Yale University before becoming a faculty member at IUSD. Dr. Bruzzaniti is actively involved in federally funded research in bone biology and regeneration, with the overall goal of improving bone health. Specifically, her laboratory is focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the formation, degradation and remodeling of bone tissue. She has expertise in bone cell biology, with a particular emphasis on elucidating the signaling mechanisms that inhibit or activate osteoclastic bone resorption, promote osteoblast activity, and mediate bone formation by megakaryocytes. Her research interests also include regenerative endodontics, repair of periapical bone lesions and the prevention of dental root resorption. Dr. Bruzzaniti regularly serves as mentor for predoctoral and postdoctoral students and fellows. Her engagement as a mentor and teacher have been recognized with the AADR National Student Research Group, Mentor of the Year Award, and the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. She was also awarded the IUSD Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award for Research in recognition of her research achievements. Craig Butler, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Butler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD) in Washington, DC. He is also a lecturer, clinical professor, and course coordinator for the preclinical Fixed Prosthodontics Simulation Lab. Dr. Butler received his D.D.S. from HUCD. He received a Certificate in Prosthodontics, and an M.S. in Oral Biology from the University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. While at the University of Maryland, he completed and published his research on the effects of fluoride and 10% carbamide peroxide on the surface roughness of low-fusing and ultra low-fusing porcelain. Dr. Butler maintained a private practice,



dedicated to prosthodontics, prior to his full time faculty appointment at HUCD. He continues to practice part time in Silver Spring, MD. Dr. Butler is passionate about interacting with students and incorporating private practice experiences into his teaching. He lectures on dental materials, occlusion, treatment planning, and implant dentistry. Dr. Butler also volunteers his time to travel with students on mission trips domestically and abroad to provide dentistry in underserved areas. He is a member of ADEA and the American College of Fixed Prosthodontics. Dr. Butler serves on the Implant Board and the OSHA and Infection Control committees at HUCD, and was appointed to the President’s Dean Search Committee for the dental school. He continues to mentor students as an advisor for Delta Mu Chi, a professional fraternity for medical, dental, and pharmacy students. He is a Board Examiner for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Dr. Butler enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences in the field of fixed prosthodontics and implant dentistry. Elisa M. Chávez, D.D.S. Dr. Chávez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. She graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry (1994) and earned her certificate in Geriatric Dentistry from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (2000). She has practiced in private, community health, long-term care and hospital settings. Dr. Chávez developed and directed for 11 years a full-time dental program for Pacific in a 780-bed, long-term care and rehabilitation hospital in San. The Pacific presence within the facility was a unique opportunity to practice, learn and teach oral health care in an integrated system of health care. In addition, she developed and has directed an extramural student rotation at On Lok Lifeways, a Program for All-Inclusive Care for Elders (PACE) in San Francisco since 2000. There, she is also an active member of the Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee for the organization. In addition, Dr. Chávez currently directs the second-year Integrated clinical sciences course and is the Chair of the Strategic Planning and Oversight Committee at Dugoni. As a recent fellow and current scholar with The Santa Fe Group, she is an advocate for the oral health needs of seniors nationwide. Brian G. Chrzan, D.D.S., Ph.D. Dr. Chrzan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine (UNLV SDM). He is also the Director of Post-Graduate Student Research at UNLV SDM, where he coordinates pediatric resident research, the M.S. in Oral Biology program, and the recently formed Ph.D. program in Oral Biology. Dr. Chrzan received his D.D.S. from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. Subsequently, he completed a three-year orthodontics residency at the same institution. During this



time, he also completed a Ph.D. in Oral Biology, with an emphasis on bone biology. His research interests focus on the mechanisms of osteoblast differentiation and proliferation responding to synthetic and natural steroids, particularly estrogens. Through this work, a model has been constructed where natural estrogens, as well as dietary phytoestrogens (soy foods), sustain osteoblast longevity and contribute to bone growth. Future areas of research include the regulation of differentiation and apoptosis in periodontal ligament and dental pulp cells. His academic responsibilities at UNLV SDM include didactic and clinical instruction for dental students, orthodontic and pediatric dental residents. Dr. Chrzan’s courses emphasize facial and tooth development, bone physiology, and diagnosis and management of inter-disciplinary cases. Drawing upon his previous practice experience, Dr. Chrzan also aims to foster novel clinical ideas, combining technology with traditional orthodontic techniques for improved outcomes in UNLV SDM’s clinical programs. Dan C. Colosi, D.D.S., Ph.D. Dr. Colosi is Associate Professor and Acting Chair of the Department of Prosthodontics and Digital Technology at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (Stony Brook SDM). He is board certified in oral and maxillofacial radiology and serves as Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Stony Brook SDM. He oversees, and teaches in, the predoctoral curriculum in oral and maxillofacial radiology at Stony Brook SDM and maintains an active faculty practice with focus on radiologic reporting and diagnostic consultations in three-dimensional dental imaging. He serves as Co-chair of the Pre-doctoral Education Committee of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Dr. Colosi conducts research on dosimetry, image quality and applications in clinical and forensic practice of dental cone-beam CT. He reviews manuscripts for dental journals, including Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology Endodontics, Dentomaxillofacial Radiology and the Journal of Dental Education. Alex DaSilva, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc. Dr. DaSilva is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biologic & Materials Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry (U-M SOD).He received his D.Med.Sc. degree in Oral Biology with clinical training in Orofacial Pain at Harvard University. He is the Founder and Director of the H.O.P.E. (Headache & Orofacial Pain Effort) laboratory, a multidisciplinary collaborative effort at the University of Michigan to investigate the brain as a research and therapeutic target for pain. The H.O.P.E. Laboratory focuses on the development of clinical and neuroscience-driven technology innovations for human neuroimaging, neuromodulation, mobile technology, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, and their integration for pain research, education, and treatment. Dr.



DaSilva has been a frequent speaker at scientific meetings such as the International Association for the Study of Pain, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Headache Society, American Pain Society, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and educational initiatives of the National Science Foundation. He is the principal investigator of several NIH, foundation and industry grants on the evaluation and modulation of opioid and cortical mechanisms in the brains of chronic pain patients in vivo, including TMD, migraine, dental pain and cancer pain. His publications have received broad media coverage by national and international venues; for example, Discovery Channel, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Scientific American’s Mind, and others. Alex J. Delgado, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Delgado received his D.D.S. from the Universidad Santa María, Caracas, Venezuela in 2001. He earned his M.S. in Operative Dentistry and a Clinical Certificate in Advanced Operative Dentistry from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry in 2014. He then became a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida College of Dentistry (UF COD), where he now serves as Director of the Division of Operative Dentistry in the Department of Restorative Dental Sciences. The Academy of Operative Dentistry recently named Dr. Delgado as the recipient of the 2019 Rising Star Award. Last year he was recognized with the 2017-2018 Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Florida. In addition, his students selected him as the 2015-2016 Clinical Teacher of the Year. Dr. Delgado is Chair of the UF COD Curriculum Committee and the representative of the University of Florida for the Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators. In 2016, he received the Judson C. Hickey Scientific Writing Award from the American Prosthodontic Society. Dr. Delgado serves as a manuscript reviewer for six peer-reviewed dental journals. He belongs to the Dental Material section for the International Association for Dental Research (IADR/AADR) and was recently appointed to the Constitution Committee of the AADR. Dr. Delgado has a practice focused on providing preventive, restorative and esthetic dentistry. He serves as faculty advisor for the American Student Dental Association and is the faculty director/advisor for the Equal Access Clinic Network. He is also a Clinical Instructor for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Dr. Delgado is a member of the National Practice-Based Research Network and part of the communication and dissemination subcommittee. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Academy of Operative Dentistry, and the IADR.



Ibrahim Duqum, D.D.S., M.S. Dr. Duqum is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Division of Prosthodontics in the Department of Restorative Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry (UNC SOD). He completed his D.D.S. from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Jordan in 1997. After graduation, he worked as a general dentist in Jordan for seven years, five of them as a military dentist in the Royal Medical Services. He Joined the UNC SOD graduate prosthodontics program in 2005 and received his certificate and an M.S. in Prosthodontics from the UNC SOD in 2008. Dr. Duqum is board eligible for the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a member of numerous dental organizations. Dr. Duqum teaches all aspects of prosthodontic therapy at the graduate, clinical and preclinical levels. He was the recipient of the 2014 Richard Hunt Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence and received multiple class teaching awards, He was also the 2015 UNC nominee for the OKU Charles Craig national award for the best innovative dental educator. Dr. Duqum serves as an editorial board member and reviewer for multiple dental journals. Additionally, he is the school of dentistry Liaison for UNC athletics. Before becoming the Director of the Division of Prosthodontics, Dr. Duqum served as the Director of Digital Dentistry. Dr. Duqum is actively involved in patient care at the UNC SOD faculty practice and is a member of the UNC SOD dental implant team. His clinical interests include oral rehabilitation of complex cases with fixed, removable and implant supported prostheses. His research interests include the educational and clinical applications of digital dentistry in addition to the clinical application of implant therapy and contemporary dental materials. Dr. Duqum publishes and lectures about all aspects of prosthodontic and dental implant therapy. Janine Fredericks-Younger, D.M.D. Dr. Fredericks-Younger is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and currently serves as the Director of Educational Programs in the Office of Academic Affairs at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Dental Medicine (RSDM). Dr. Fredericks-Younger earned a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1995 and her D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) in 1999. Following graduation, she completed a General Practice Residency Program at TUSDM. After receiving her D.M.D., she joined the faculty at TUSDM, serving as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Operative Dentistry then transitioning to the Department of General Dentistry as a Practice Coordinator.



In 2005, Dr. Fredericks-Younger joined the RSDM, formerly known as UMDNJ-NJDS. She began her RSDM service as a Group Practice Administrator, then served as Director of Clinics from 2014-2017. In the latter position, she studied the role of patient complaints in continuous quality improvement and published a dental specific taxonomy for complaint categorization. Since 2017, Dr. Fredericks-Younger has served as the Director of Educational Programs in the Office of Academic Affairs. In this role, she interfaces with postdoctoral program directors, faculty, and residents to globally support the postdoctoral curriculum. She is Course Director for the postdoctoral core curriculum, PGY1 and PGY2 Core: Foundations of Oral Biology and Advanced Biomedical Science in Dentistry, respectively. In addition, she teaches in several predoctoral courses and preclinic labs. Dr. Fredericks-Younger serves as the Co-chair of the RSDM Accreditation Committee and Chair of both the RSDM Planning Committee and RSDM Vendor Committee. She is a member of the Student Academic Performance Committee, Quality Assurance Committee, and Executive Council, and serves as the Vice President of the RSDM Academic Assembly. Daniel A. Givan, D.M.D., Ph.D., FACP Dr. Givan is a Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry (UAB SOD) and serves as the Associate Chair for the Department of Restorative Sciences, the Division Director of Prosthodontics, and the Director of Digital Dentistry and Clinical Laboratory Services. He received his dental degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry in 1992 and afterwards completed a general practice residency followed by a specialty residency in prosthodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and has earned a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering with emphasis in dental materials from UAB. He joined the UAB SOD faculty in 1998 and is actively involved in both clinical research and applications of technology to dentistry in both the graduate and undergraduate curricula. He has lectured nationally and internationally with emphasis in occlusion, implantology and digital dentistry. Dr. Givan has served as the elected chair of his school faculty multiple times and remains active in policy and shared governance. He currently serves as Chair of the university-wide Faculty Policies and Procedures Committee as well as a member of the Executive Council of the University Faculty Senate. Dr. Givan maintains an active faculty practice limited to prosthodontics and is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Association for Dental Research, ADEA, the Academy of Osseointegration, and the American Dental Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Prosthodontists, where he has held numerous leadership positions and currently serves as the Secretary of the Board of Directors. He also serves as the Chair of the Council for the American Board of Prosthodontics.



Deeba Kashtwari, B.D.S., M.S. Dr. Kashtwari is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the University of Florida College of Dentistry (UF COD), Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnostic Sciences, with multiple leadership roles. She is the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Radiation Safety Officer for the College of Dentistry and adjunct faculty in Medical Radiology. Dr. Kashtwari graduated from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, India in 2003 with a B.D.S. and worked in private practice before continuing her education the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also served as a teaching assistant for four years, completed a Clinical Research and Faculty Development Fellowship in 2011 and earned her M.S. in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2014. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in 2015. Dr. Kashtwari is also a site visitor for Advanced Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. In addition to ADEA, she is a member of ADA, FDA, AAOMR and RSNA. She represents the College on the Human Use of Radioisotopes and Radiation committee, serves on the College’s Advanced Education Faculty Committee, is an ex officio of Clinical Affairs and Quality Assurance committee and Chair of the subcommittee for Radiation Safety and Quality Assurance. She is also member of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Postdoctoral Education and Awards Committees. Dr. Kashtwari is heavily involved in predoctoral and graduate dental education as Course Director of all predoctoral radiology courses at UF COD and mentors up to 12 residents in the postdoctoral program and participates in clinical research and the Radiology Faculty Practice. Edmund Khoo, B.D.Sc.(Hons), ABO, FICD, FACD Dr. Khoo is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and teaches orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics full-time at his alma mater, New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). Dr. Khoo actively publishes in several journals, including the Journal of Dental Research and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and has been invited to chair and judge numerous scientific sessions. He is also a peer reviewer for PLOS One and sits on the editorial advisory board for Orthotown Magazine. Highlights of his career include the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Foundation TM Graber Teaching Award, the Academy of Distinguished Educators Faculty Award, the NYU Dentistry Faculty Council Teaching Recognition Award and, most recently, the ADEA/ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows/Colgate-Palmolive Co. Junior Faculty Award. He is very active in ADEA and is the current Councilor for the ADEA Section on Orthodontics, a member of the PASS Advisory



Group and a site visitor for CODA. He holds multiple committee positions at NYUCD and is a member of the AAO Council on Education. He has significant responsibilities in postdoctoral orthodontic education, including a strong focus in the board certification training program for his students. His academic and research interests are accelerated tooth movement, evidence-based orthodontics, biomechanics and mechanotherapy. Larisa Kure, M.P.A. Ms. Kure is the Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry (UCSF SOD). She received her master’s degree in public administration, with an emphasis on managing in public institutions, from The George Washington University in 1999. Ms. Kure joined UCSF in 2000 and has held a series of progressively responsible positions across the schools of medicine and dentistry. In 2015, she was awarded UCSF’s Chancellor Award for Exceptional University Management based on her work in breaking down administrative silos and providing outstanding and cost-efficient support to faculty, staff and students across departmental and school boundaries. As Associate Dean in UCSF SOD, Ms. Kure is focused on creating a culture where staff are valued and supported as important stakeholders of the community. Despite staff being the backbone for many aspects of academic institutions, their needs are often are a lower priority than those of faculty and students. Ms. Kure is dedicated to ensuring that staff feel connected to the mission and values of the school. As a result, happy staff translates into better supported faculty and students and greater patient satisfaction. Those, in turn, lead to a better bottom line, enabling UCSF SOD to invest in the future of its students, staff and faculty. Ms. Kure is a recognized leader at UCSF and sits on numerous campus and schoolwide committees, including serving as chair or co-chair of many. During her tenure as Co-chair of the Committee on the Status of Women, the committee created a series of award-winning tip sheets to combat gender bias at UCSF. Jim Yuan Lai, D.M.D., M.Sc.(Perio), Ed.D., FRCD(C) Dr. Lai received a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Genetics and Biology from the University of Toronto in 1993 and a D.M.D. in 1997 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He completed a M.Sc. in Periodontics at the University of Toronto in 2000. He was a 2008 graduate of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, where he received an M.Ed. Dr. Lai then received an Ed.D. in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013. Dr. Lai is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is also Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and International Congress of Oral Implantologists.



Dr. Lai joined the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 2000. He has served in various roles, such as Director of Graduate Periodontology, Discipline Head of Periodontology, Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences and Vice Dean of Education. He was promoted to Associate Professor, Teaching Stream in 2019. In recognition of his exceptional contribution to dental education at Canadian universities, he was awarded the National Dental Teaching Award in 2017 by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry. Dr. Lai has also been serving as a dental officer reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces since 2006. He was the Deputy Commanding Officer of 25 (Toronto) Field Ambulance from 2008 to 2010. Paul A. Lindauer, D.D.S. Dr. Lindauer joined the faculty of East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine (ECU SoDM), after completing a 33-year career in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. During his naval career, Dr. Lindauer held leadership positions at every level of Navy Dentistry. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor and serves as Director, Division of Endodontics, Director of the Dental Care Foundations Course, and Faculty Council Chair. Dr. Lindauer received his D.D.S. from Loyola University Chicago School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy Dental Corps and later received his certificate in endodontics from the Naval Postgraduate Dental School. Dr. Lindauer is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, Charter Life Member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Endodontics, Fellow of the American College of Dentists, and Fellow of the International College of Dentists. While in the Navy, he served as an Alternate Delegate and Delegate in the American Dental Association House of Delegates and currently serves as an Alternate Delegate in the American Dental Association House of Delegates representing the North Carolina Dental Society. A lifelong learner, Dr. Lindauer is enrolled in an adult education master’s program at East Carolina University. Karen McPherson, D.M.D. Dr. McPherson is the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and an Associate Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina James. B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine (MUSC CDM). Dr. McPherson earned her D.M.D. from the MUSC College of Dental Medicine in 1997. Following graduation, she became an officer in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps, where she completed an AEGD residency at Camp Pendleton in California. She spent 10 years in private practice before joining the faculty at MUSC CDM in 2011. She served as Vice-chair of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation prior to assuming the role of Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs. In addition to her administrative roles, Dr. McPherson is the Course Director for Fixed Prosthodontics I and is a clinical attending faculty in the restorative clinic. She is involved in many other aspects of the D.M.D. curriculum, serving as a lecturer, research



mentor, and course facilitator for Early Clinics I-IV. She has published multiple journal articles on digital dentistry, the incorporation of technology in dental education, and CAD CAM restorations. Dr. McPherson also maintains a private practice in the JBE College of Dental Medicine Dental Faculty Practice clinic. Dr. McPherson is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy. She is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society and currently serves as the MUSC chapter president. She is an active member of the ADA, AGD, and ADEA. She has served on and chaired many committees at both the University and College levels, including the Faculty Senate, Women Scholar’s Initiative, Clinical Affairs Committee, Dean’s Leadership Council, Curriculum Committee, and the Academic Performance and Professionalism Committee. Hiba Qari, D.D.S., M.Sc. Dr. Qari is an Assistant Professor at West Virginia University School of Dentistry (WVU SOD). She is the Director of the Biopsy Service, Maxillofacial Diagnostics, and is the Director of the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology. Dr. Qari is also the oral pathology consultant at WVU, Ruby Hospital. She earned her B.D.S. from King Abdul-Aziz University, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, she worked in Saudi Arabia as a general practitioner for five years, after which she returned to the United States, completing an M.S. from Tufts University, with research foci on flow cytometry and construction of 3-dimensional human skin equivalent models induced from pluripotent stem cells. Continuing her professional and educational development, Dr. Qari completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry. Dr. Qari is a Fellow of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. She is a member of the International Association of Oral Pathologists (IAOP), Eastern Society of Teachers of Oral Pathology (EASTOP), and the Western Society of Teachers of Oral Pathology (WESTOP). Currently, she serves on several committees at WVU SOD, including the Dental Admission committee, Faculty Search committee, and the Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion committee. Dr. Qari is also actively involved in raising awareness of oral cancer in the state of West Virginia by presenting pro bono lectures and seminars to various dental societies. Moreover, Dr. Qari has been engaged to present at several conferences and has a strong record of publication, with several published abstracts and articles in international peer-reviewed journals covering various topics in oral pathology.



Sophia Saeed, D.M.D. Dr. Saeed is Professor and Residence and Department Chair of Clinical Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine (UNLV SDM). Dr. Saeed graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, then pursued training in hospital dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She was recruited to the full-time faculty at UCSF, where she served in various capacities over the years. In December 2018, she began her current post at UNLV SDM. Dr. Saeed has received numerous local and national teaching awards; she has further been honored by being inducted in to the Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honor society and the UCSF School of Medicine’s Academy for Medical Educators. Dr. Saeed also serves as a consultant for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and Academy for the Advancement of Leadership. Her passion in life is having a positive impact on people around her. Walter L. Siqueira, D.D.S., Ph.D. Dr. Siqueira is a tenured Professor and Associate Dean, Graduate and Postgraduate at Western University Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry in Canada. Dr. Siqueira is a dental clinician-scientist. He obtained his D.D.S. and specialty training at Santo Amaro University, a Ph.D. at the University of São Paulo and postdoctoral training at Boston University. He is a Diplomate in Internationalization of Higher Education, College of the Americas, Canada. Dr. Siqueira leads the Salivary Proteomics Research Laboratory, a unique research program in Canada and one of only a few in the world in this area of research. He is recognized as a research leader nationally and internationally in salivary research for therapeutic and diagnostic applications, an area critically important for oral and systemic health. Dr. Siqueira has been awarded several prestigious teaching and research honors. He was a recipient of the W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry. He received the 2012 Salivary Researcher of the Year Award from the Salivary Research Group, IADR. The same year, he received the Visiting Professorship Award from the Canadian Association for Dental Research (CADR). Dr. Siqueira was also the recipient of the prestigious CIHR New Investigator Salary Award. In 2018, he received from Western University the title of Faculty Scholar. Recently, he was granted the 2019 IADR Distinguished Scientist Award. Dr. Siqueira was Councillor-at-Large of the CADR. He now serves as Vice-President (2017-2019) and upcoming President (2019-2021) of the CADR. Additionally, he was one of the founders of the Network for Canadian Oral Health Research (NCOHR, a CIHR-funded network) and member of the Steering Committee. Internationally, he served as President and Scientific Program Chair of the Salivary Research Group, IADR. He is an Associate Editor of the journal Clinical Oral Investigations and an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Dental Research.



Maryam Tabrizian, Ph.D., M.B.A. Dr. Tabrizian is the Associate Dean-Research and Graduate Studies and full professor at McGill University Faculty of Dentistry (McGill FOD) and also full professor at the McGill University Biomedical Engineering Department. She received her Ph.D. in Physical Sciences with a multidisciplinary background including physics, chemistry and biology from Université Pierre et Marie Curie-École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie de Paris (France) and an M.B.A from Ecole des Études Commercials (Canada). Dr Tabrizian is a prominent researcher in the field of regenerative medicine and nanomedicine due to her expertise in design of advanced biomaterials and biointerfaces for promoting the interactions of biologics with biosubstrate. She has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles with a H-Index of 47 and 57, according to the Web of Science and Google Scholar, respectively. She became the FRSQ-National Researcher in 2006, Guggenheim Fellow in Biomedical Sciences in 2010, the International Fellow of the Biomaterials Science & Engineering in 2011, and the elected Fellow of Royal Society of Canada-Academy of Science in 2017 for her extensive contribution to the field of biomedical engineering and biomedical sciences. She is extensively involved in education of the HQPs and in improving the curriculum of undergraduate and graduate teaching in both health science and engineering. Dr Tabrizian was founding member and the Director of the Centre for Biorecognition and Biosensors for 10 years (2001-2011). She is a member of many peer-review panels and advisory boards, including the European Research Commission, CIHR, NSERC, Advisory Task Force Committee for Québec Nanoscience/nanotechnology and at the Board of Directors MITACS. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Materials, the Associate Editor of the Journal of Biological Engineering and the International Journal of Biomaterials Research and Engineering. Ransome van der Hoeven, Ph.D. Dr. Ransome van der Hoeven is Assistant Professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Health School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD). He obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and completed his postdoctoral research fellowship at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School. He teaches physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and emergency medicine for dental and dental hygiene students and serves as the Course Director for the Biomedical Science Core and Dental Emergencies courses. He also serves as the Director of the Basic Sciences Section in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences. In 2014 and 2018, Dr. van der Hoeven was the recipient of the Dean’s Excellence Awards for Scholarship of Teaching and Integration, respectively. Dr. van der Hoeven’s



research focuses on understanding mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions using the invertebrate model system C. elegans. His research has led to numerous peer-reviewed publications and several presentations at local and national meetings. He has mentored several undergraduate students, dental students and residents in research. Joseph M. Vitolo, D.M.D., Ph.D., M.S. Dr. Vitolo received his D.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He went on to complete a General Practice Residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Dr. Vitolo was in private practice for several years in Rutherford, NJ before returning to school to pursue an M.S. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Gene Therapy and Therapeutics Branch of the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research. He went on to serve as the Director of both the Advanced Care Clinic and the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency program at Marquette University School of Dentistry. Dr. Vitolo joined the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University in 2016, where he currently serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Advanced Education. Pamela C. Yelick, Ph.D. Dr. Yelick is a tenured Professor in the Department of Orthodontics, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM). She completed her Ph.D. in 1989, was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston MA, 1989–1991, and Research Associate from 1991–1993 at the Harvard Biological Laboratories in Cambridge MA. She joined the Forsyth Institute as an Assistant Member of Staff in 1993. She was an instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and was promoted to Associate Member of Staff in 2004. In 2006, she joined TUSDM as an Associate Professor with tenure and as Director of the Division of Craniofacial and Molecular Genetics, and was promoted to full Professor in 2008. Dr. Yelick holds adjunct appointments in the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the Department of BME. She served as program leader for the Cancer Biology Program, Tufts Cancer Center, Tufts Medical Center, from 2013–2016. In 2018, Dr. Yelick was appointed to Director of the Genetics Program, Tufts Sackler School. Dr. Yelick’s research focuses on craniofacial and skeletal mineralized tissue development, disease and regeneration, using molecular genetic approaches in zebrafish, and dental pulp derived stem cells and tissue engineering approaches for regenerative dentistry and medicine. Dr. Yelick has served on NIH Grant Review Panels since 1997, and for NSF, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and March of Dimes, and is a reviewer for dozens of journals,



including PNAS, Science, Development, Cell, Developmental Biology and the Journal of Dental Research. Dr. Yelick has received NIH funding since 1990 and was awarded the 2004 William J. Gies Award in Biomaterials and Bioengineering Research, and the 2017 IADR Distinguished Scientist Isaac Schour Memorial Award. She has mentored hundreds of graduate students, technicians, postdoctoral fellows and undergraduates, many of whom have established careers in research, medicine and dentistry.
