A D E L A I D E W I N D O R C H E S T R A is dedicated
to presenting works that go further than
traditional wind and brass ensemble
repertoire. Our aim is to delight and
inspire as we traverse a wide range of
compositions and styles that bring to
life the unique constellation of musical
soundscapes available to wind orchestra.
O U R 2 01 5 S E A S O N will incorporate works
large and small, new and old, by some
of music’s most important composers.
Our programs are sure to demonstrate
vibrancy and subtlety, sonority and
rhythmic energy found in a stunningly
diverse array of repertoire. Joining us will
be concert pianist KO N S TA N T I N S H A M R AY ,
and jazz giant A N DY F I RT H , whose
supreme musical abilities will no doubt
thrill and astound.
Adelaide Wind Orchestra continues to
develop and consolidate its youthful
beginnings, and looks forward to your
interest and support through our most
exciting year yet!

Open 2015 with a twirl, and join Guest
Conductor DAV I D P O L A I N and Adelaide
Wind Orchestra on a cascading global
tour of human passion, as we celebrate the
very beating heart of music: the DA N C E .
Following his highly successful guest
appearance in 2014, the carnival
atmosphere of the ADELAIDE FRINGE
forms a festive backdrop for David’s
return, with this shimmering selection of
rumbles, sashays, stomps and whirls.
Sitting still is not on the program.
After an initial feast of mesmerising
K L E Z M E R , a pause – and then the bell
will toll an untimely twelve, to herald
in Saint-Saëns’ delectable, relentless
M AC A B R E - P I E C E of jiggling bones.
The bittersweet ecstasy of ill-fated
young love then takes to the boards with
the sensual Cha-Chas, and smooth cool
of 1950s New York’s Upper W E S T S I D E ,
before the energy level is notched up
even further for the fiery LI B E RTA N G O ,
and the pulsing Cuban rhythms of
Revueltas’ mystical S E N S E M AYA .
To finish, we ballet – as the heart-
rending theme of young love is
reprised with astonishing beauty by
R O M E O A N D J U LI E T , and then left to
linger in our enraptured souls.

It’s always a treat to revel in a rebel, so
we have collected together some of
music’s finest misfits, to present you
with a showcase of musical mavericks.
Our heroes have been called crazy,
unhinged, irreverent and wayward.
They don’t always put their tones in a
row, or keep standard time, but they
don’t always don’t, either. These guys
don’t belong to the latest school, or
some trendy movement, they aren’t
in uniform, and if you tell them what
to do, they probably won’t. They don’t
even really have that much in common.
Except M U S I C .
Acres of music. Landscapes of music.
Worlds, oceans, cities, machines,
and rambling country band-loads of
wonderful music.
So join us in celebration of our
favourite un-rutted, free-wheeling,
clique-busting heroes.
They are sometimes noisy, and
perhaps, on occasion, even a little bit
rude, but after M AV E R I C K S you will be
left in no doubt that they have each
marked the world a more interesting
and wondrous place.

himself as a distinguished and formidable

For our September Masterworks

evening of landmark music.
With two feet firmly planted, we launch

by the AU S T R A LI A N P R E M I È R E of
ground-breaking Swedish trombonist

Our theme of D E F I A N C E then emerges
fully-fledged, first in JA N ÁČE K ’ S V Z D O R ,
a resolute masterwork for piano in the

virtuous rebellion, resistance and hope,

Finally, the pièce de résistance –
the incomparable R H A P S O DY I N B LU E ,
conceived in the crucible of the jazz
revolution, and performed for you with
impassioned virtuosity by Mr Konstantin
Shamray and Adelaide Wind Orchestra.

To open the spectacular December
M A S T E RWO R K S concert, Adelaide
Wind Orchestra is proud to
present the world première of a
new composition by Adelaide’s very
own DAV I D J O H N L A N G . We would
be delighted for you to join us in
capturing this very special, never-to-
be-repeated moment in music history.
Then two of the most enduring and
popular programmatic concert works
in the repertoire, each famous for so
ingeniously employing the evocative
timbre and subtle complexion of wind
instruments to tell their tales.
The epic stage, and beloved characters
of LO R D O F T H E R I N G S are panoramically
portrayed in the award-winning first
symphony of eminent wind orchestra
composer J O H A N D E M E I J .
Then the Eternal City gives up its
layered secrets, as R E S P I G H I leads us
into the hidden nooks and crannies
of Rome, inviting us to listen, as the
children play their childhood games,
deep shadows haunt the ancient tombs,
the nightingale sings its song to the
moon, and the legions march their long,
straight road – all watched over by those
ancient sentinels, the PI N E S O F R O M E .
