Does it ever occur to you that we seem to be living in a time of instant gratification? We seem to be settling in what we can get so fast for the quick attainability of hap-piness and contentment. And love seems to be losing its essence day by day because everything comes in a click of a mouse and a tap of a finger. That appreciation means having your picture liked and deeper appreciation means having someone scroll through photos and words you’ve posted. It’s a little creepy, yet if not most, then some of us tend to consider it an act of thoughtfulness and admira-tion.

Love is fleeting.

How will you describe your art?

Miles: It is making entire worlds and stories through a single drawing.

Fabo: As of now, it is ro-mantic and sarcastic.

What’s your medium?

Miles: Pen, markers on paper

Fabo: As of now, oil pastel, acrylic and ink.

What inspires you?

Miles: Artworks by people like M.C. Escher, Salvador Dali, Jan Svankmajer

Fabo: Past and everyday life.

Does your surrounding af-fect your art in anyway? If so, how?

Miles: When I see some-thing strange, I draw it in my own way.

Fabo: Yes, so much. Ex-cited ako palagi sa idea na “lust for life”. Na mahalaga ang ngayon. Ang past ay inspiration, ang now ay ac-tion.

As an artist what do you think is the influence your child can acquire?

Fabo: Siguro, experience lang. Ang art kasi ay con-stant change. Siguro mai-papaliwanag ko sa kanya ang art when it reflects life. Pero nasa sa kanya na when art dictates life.

How do you feel being a father of an artist?

Fabo: Proud, very, very proud.

Do you feel pressured as an artist’s son?

Miles: No, not really.

When did you see his poten-tials?

Fabo: Noong una kong nakita siyang nag-doodle, hehe. Big fan ako ng anak ko kaya I see everything as potential kay Miles.

What do you think is the dif-ference between your work and your father’s work?

Miles: Daddy is more on making art with human characters.

Fabo: No

Can you share us the things you have learned from your father?

Miles: He told me I can draw anything and share my opinions to everybody.

Being an artist, what advice can you give your child?

Fabo: “Anak, always hold a brush/pen in your hand and a concept on the other.”

Where do you think is the best place to see art?

Miles: Exhibits and art films.

Fabo: Anywhere, basta alam mo lang ang hinaha-nap mo.

What international art desti-nation do you most want to visit?

Miles: Japan

Fabo: Japan

Who’s your favorite living art-ist?

Miles: Jan Svankmajer

Fabo: My son, at marami pang iba.

Where can we go to see more of your works?

Miles: Deviant Art, I am CarmeltheSlimy there. In my Facebook page and In-stagram, as Miles Fabonan.

Fabo: May regular posting ako sa Facebook.

What’s the first artwork you ever sold?

Miles: First time that my original artwork was bought, it was from our first exhibit at Secret Fresh last May 2014. Its title is “Char-acter Session.”The first time that prints of my drawings were bought

was in 98B Escolta Future Market, the first time we joined the market day last year.

Fabo: Hindi ko na maalala. Basta parang yung artwork na yun ay Flight of Icarus at isang si Super Man na nag-a-ahit.

Most unforgettable experience as an artist:

Miles:Date: May 25, 2014Place: Secret FreshPerson: No one in particu-lar. It’s the feeling. It was the spot-on recorded inter-view just before the open-ning of our Testing Testing exhibit was a bit awkward. I am a bit shy but thankfully it went well.

Fabo: Parang wala pa na-man.

How will you describe each other’s art?

Miles: I like Daddy’s own style of art.

Fabo: I love art. My son is art.

What do you love about each other?

Miles: We share our crea-tions with each other and always ready and open with opinions or critique.

Fabo: Yung constant learn-ing namin from each other. Ang dami kong natututu-nang bago sa anak ko. Na-tutuwa ako sa pagiging vo-cal niya sa mga gusto niya at perspective niya sa mga bagay. Gusto ko magpatu-loy ito for a long time kaya I will need to cope up. :)

Hi, please introduce your-selves and the brand.

I’m Rik and I’m Pat, and we’re Proudrace

How did you come up with your brand name?

It was a play on words when we were into partying hard. How every night after a party things would turn out crazy and we always joked that we belong to a proud race. But now it just means more to us because we really are proud of our race.

How did it all start? And how did it feel like introducing a new brand of street style to the people especially here in the Philippines?

It started as a t -shirt and accessories brand and we mostly sold to friends at parties. It was never our intention to build a brand, it was more of something that we do on the side. Then we took a year and a half off and re launched the label as a full-time clothing and accessories brand. When we re launched the label, the concentration was more

for the overseas market. It’s just now that we are concentrating more locally and rooting the label here in Manila since we opened a retail shop last month. We feel like the country is slowly being open-minded to love their own.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Everywhere, anything and anyone can be our inspiration. We like to travel and we’re always observant of the street culture of every country that we visit. Youth

“Youth CuLtuRe, SuB CuLtuReS, MuSIC, And noStALgIA InSPIRe uS.”

What is the meaning behind the different symbols that are printed on your new collection?

Well, basically MMXV is 2015 so we’re trying to say that you can be the man of the year in 2015. The shapes are inspired from the Maui and Sons classic logo.

We noticed the transition of your first collection from the latest ones, what made you decide to seemingly jump from one semblance to another?

We always want to reinvent every season and create something new, but we always try to keep the DNA of the label every season.

Where can we find Proudrace?

Besides our stockists overseas. You can also shop us online at www.proudrace.com and we recently opened a retail space here in Manila at SOMA Stores so you can also visit us there if you want an instore experience.

culture, sub cultures, music and nostalgia also inspire us.

Your recent collection is called “Man of the Year”, can you tell us the concept behind it?

We wanted to get back to square one and what’s the best inspiration but old school streetwear and surf wear that we wore when we were growing up. Maui and Sons is one of our main inspirations we like how it’s still very contemporary until now.

We will definitely branch out the label to different markets and have a wider audience.

What do you love most about each other?

We encourage each other to be the best in what we do.

If there is someone who can best represent Proudrace, who do you think it is?

It’s definitely us. Proudrace is our blood, sweat and tears.

What do you love most about your brand?

It’s becoming a staple in everyone’s closet. A goal that we have dreamed of and it’s slowly becoming a reality.

How do you see Proudrace 5 years from now?

What is love? Biology states that it’s the theory of evolution: a survival mechanism. Chemistry’s solutions for it are pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin and vasopressin. Newton’s third law of relativity might be the formula. It could be all of the above. Or it could be about having the last Mary Grace cheese roll, dip-ping it in hot chocolate, and deciding to share itWho is your Crush? How will you describe your art?

Miguel: It’s hard to describe it, I use objects that have meaning/history as my main material and combi-ning it with my own expe-riences in my life or things I see in our society and make works out of them. It’s one of my ways of un-derstanding the world we live in.

Ryan: Cut and felt.

What’s your medium? What made you decide to use it?

Ryan: We have this long personal relationship with paper. When we start wri-ting as a kid, we scribble on sheets of paper. Some people keep diaries. Some

people keep notes writ-ten on pages and pages of paper—they’re almost metaphorical. Even in our current technological age, we still engage, transact and communicate using paper as a means to record important matters. I like those properties of pa-per. It is such a simple ma-terial, and yet you can draw on its surface, fold, cut and turn it into something more complex.

Where do you think is the best place to see art?

Ryan: Depends on how you look at things. I believe creativity is everywhere.

What international art des-tination do you most want to visit?

Ryan: Every culture has its own history of art mak-ing and I would want to see them all. That’s an ultimate dream. If it’s possible to see everything, why not?

Does your surrounding af-fect your art in anyway? If so, how?

Miguel: My surroundings are my inspiration! I use objects as my main mate-rial for my work, so it al-ways depends on where or who I am with, and that will dictate the concepts of my projects and the aesthetics of my pieces.

Who’s your favorite living art-ist?

Ryan: Do Ho Suh. He’s a Korean artist based in New

York. He works with fab-ric by creating a series of massive, sculptural, floating structures resembling his native house back in Korea. His works talk about dias-pora, home and belonging. I really love his journey and his work.

Do you collect anything?

Ryan: It’s almost an addic-tion but I like collecting stuff from Booksale and acqui-ring unnecessary things that I think matter.

What’s the first artwork you ever purchased?

Ryan: The portrait my cou-sin drew of me. Bought for a Jollie Kiddie Meal.

What’s the first artwork you ever sold?

Ryan: A poster color pain-ting of a tree I made when I joined an art competition in grade school. (This is a secret but my mom was the one who actually bought

my work. I found out about it because when I got home that night, I wondered, why was my painting hanging on our wall?)

What inspires you?

Miguel: Everything! Living in this time and moment.

Do you have a gallery/ mu-seum-going routine?

Ryan: I do. I enjoy going to those spaces. I like observ-ing the objects they contain and to be able to expe-rience the structure of the space.

What artwork/s do you wish you did yourself?

Ryan: I’d rather make them my inspiration to create more; to be able to learn the process and ideas be-hind the work along with the artists who created them.

Can you tell us your creative process?

Miguel: I don’t, I just use my instincts.

What are your future plans as a creative individual?

Miguel: Work on new up-coming projects and chase the dream!

Where can we go to see more of your works?

Miguel: It’s mostly on the in-ternet, but also if I got some on-going shows in the fu-ture you can check them out.

How do you see yourself five years from now?

Miguel: To be honest, I don’t know. I could living in another country, I could still be practicing art or not. I could be a doctor or a law-yer. Hahaha life is full of surprises.

Most unforgettable experience as an artist:

Miguel: When I went

back to practice art after I stopped for 7 years.Date: year 2012Place: Brisbane AustraliaPerson: Me

Ryan: Having my first solo show or maybe cutting myself and fortunately not bleeding to death. I think both struck me on the same level.Date: 2011Place: Silverlens Galleries/My studio.Person: Me.

Ever wished you were some-one else? if yes, who?

Miguel: Not really, I am happy for who I am.

Have you always been fasci-nated with dolls?

Miguel: I have, I use to col-lect a lot of Action figures since I was a kid so its nat-ural for me to be intrigued by them as an adult.

What’s the inspiration in ma-king these dolls? What is your

reason for creating them?

Miguel: I love the crafts-manship of these dolls, they have this certain aura as well. I looked at the history of these dolls and why are they here in the Philippines and learned a lot of inte-resting things about them and why they are here, the way I saw them was they did their own migration from Japan to here in the Philip-pines, and I can relate to them on my own personal experience plus other in-teresting facts about them and other reasons why they were dumped in a country like ours.

Which ones (dolls) are you favourites and why?

Miguel: I love the one that is covered with umbrellas, she has a certain aura that I got attracted too.

Where do you want to show-case your craft?

Miguel: Anywhere I can.

But some day I wish I can get in the international art stage and show my work in amazing institutions around the world.

What can you say about each other’s art?

Miguel: You can see his heart and soul in his art.

Ryan: I want to use the word “enticing” because it suggests a different way of perceiving, when confron-ted by his pieces. His work is about the material, and material is about his work.

Describe it in 3 words.

Miguel: Beautiful. Intricate. Honest.

Is there any chance of collabo-ration?

Miguel: We actually talked about it and at some stage yes.

Ryan: Of course!

What would it look like?

Miguel: Gin and Tonic

Ryan: Like two peas in a pod.

What do you not want Ryan to know about you?

Miguel: Nothing. He’s my brother from another mo-ther

What do you love about each other?

Miguel: All about him. He’s the complete opposite of me and I love it.

Ryan: He’s a fascinating, multi-faceted, strictly-KTZ-Westwood-consuming, party monster. And also the most endearing five-inch-platform-wearing human being you’ll ever meet <3

Hi, please introduce your-selves and the brand.

We’re Nat, Shaf and Dani. We’ve been best friends since 2006 and we started Mash-Up as a vision that has exceeded our expecta-tions. We’re a collective of creative designers who love to create, be around people and live life as crazily as we can.

How did it all start?

From a phone call from Daniela; “Do you guys want to start a brand?”

What separates you from other brands?

Mash-Up is us! Nobody else can be us!

How will you describe your style?

Fun, comfortable and nar-rative

Where do you get your inspi-ration?

Literally anywhere; the toilet, Instagram, books, newspapers, stalking peo-ple….

If there is someone who can best represent MashUp who do you think it is?

M.I.A. for sure!

“We thInk In nARRA-tIveS And tRY to LInk dISPARAte eLeMentS

togetheR.”

What is the concept behind #mashuptribe?

We wanted to create a fashion label that wasn’t about being ‘exclusive’, and to create an urban tribe that anyone that was open to it would be part of!

Thoughts on past collabora-tions you’ve done, and will there be any more future col-laborations?

We love collaborations! We’ve worked with Lomo-graphy to DIY a camera, with Pioneer to pimp up headphones, with Uniqlo to create cool t-shirts that were sold all over South East Asia, cool night-club

Butter Factory to create party nights, Canvas to hold a virtual exhibition, and now we’re working with an online retailer (we can’t say yet!) for an awesome range of remixed street wear! There will always be collaborations, it’s a Mash-Up collective! :)

Can you describe to us your creative process?

We think in narratives and we try to link disparate el-ements together! For ex-ample, cubism and strong Algerian women for Spring/Summer 2015, or computer cyber hackers and the Ndebele tribe in Africa for Spring/Summer 2013!

What word best describes the brand?

Energetic.

What do you love about your brand?

That it’s ours and we can create things we love and meet creative inspiring peo-ple while building the brand

What can we look forward to in the near future?

International domination! HA HA HA!

How did you two meet and what made you decide to cre-ate a duo that makes lulla-bies?

Shawn: I started writing the first songs while Yoshi-mi was asleep. I had to make sure they were quiet enough not to wake her up (but I always ended up waking her up when I made one that was so good I couldn’t wait until the morn-ing to show her).

Yoshimi: Zzz.

How did you come up with the name Lullatone?

Shawn: Our first album was almost entirely made out of super simple sine tones sequenced to sound like lullabies.

Yoshimi: Plus it kinda sounds like “xylophone”

How do other people describe your music?

Shawn: Music you can read to.

Yoshimi: (Pajama) party jams.

Instead of doing other genres, what made you decide to pro-duce lullabies?

Shawn: Actually, only a few of our albums are lullabies. The others are all soundtracks for some other type of situation. Like… rainy days, seasons chan-ging and adventures. But there are a lot of lullabies in there!

How is it like living in Japan as a duo band? How has it af-fected you and your craft?

Shawn: Japan is a very clean, detailed and hard-working place. I think that pressure helps keep us productive.Yoshimi: We can eat deli-cious food every day.

What made you decide to use Raymond Scott’s “Soothing Sounds for Baby” as a refer-ence?

“[ouR MuSIC IS] Mu-SIC You CAn ReAd to... (PAJAMA) PARtY JAMS.”

Shawn: When we first got interested in electronic mu-sic, it seemed like a good idea to the first pioneer of it. Some of the sounds he came up with were real-ly ground-breaking at the time.

What separates you from the others?

Shawn: Molecules.

Yoshimi: Negative space.

What can you say about the music industry now?

Shawn: I don’t really know...

Yoshimi: I have never thought about it.

How do you come up with a new track? What is the pro-cess like?

Shawn: Each song is differ-ent, but a lot start out with playing a phrase on my guitalele (half-ukulele, half-guitar instrument). Then we often change that melody

over to a different instru-ment. I like thinking up something in one place and using it somewhere else.

Yoshimi: Humming in the bathtub.

Among the instruments you play which is your favourite and why?

Shawn: Guitalele!

Yoshimi: Suzuki Andes (it looks like a pianca, but sounds like a recorder).

Most unforgettable experience as an artist:

Date: 26 June 2010Place: ParisEvent: We got to play at the OFFF Festival in front of many graphs designers that we really admire.

What lullaby would you dedi-cate for your baby?

Shawn: I wrote our album “Songs that Spin in Circles” in the hospital when Yoshi-mi had our son Niko.

Yoshimi: Our daughter likes our winter EP “While Winter Whispers”

Where can we listen to your music?

Yoshimi: http://lullatone.bandcamp.com

What are your future plans?

Shawn: We already have bits and pieces of 3 more albums in the works!

Yoshimi: More vacations

What do you love most about each other?

Shawn: Everything.

Yoshimi: And morehigh-fives.

“I WouLd LIke to SAY MY WoRk IS JuSt

honeSt.”

How will you describe your art?

Jaycee: More of a mono-tone-ish, minimalist kind of style and I love Asian girls’ face, so yeah. :D

Tokwa: I really don’t like describing my art because, I really don’t know? I al-ways answer this from the common consensus of the people who are familiar with my work. Melancholy, dreamy, ethereal, art nou-veau. “Gumawa ka naman ng masaya, please?” But If coming from myself, I would like to say that my work is just ‘honest”.

What’s your medium?

Jaycee: Mostly graphite, china ink, markers, minsan nag di-digital din ako.

Tokwa: Anything I can get may hands on actually. It’s mainly watercolour/acrylic. But I hardly have a work that is purely done in just one medium.

What inspires you?

Jaycee: Family, friends, people.

Tokwa: Literature, conver-sations, song lyrics, a new learned word.

Does your surrounding af-fect your art in anyway? If so, how?

Jaycee: Yup! Especially when you’re surrounded by these creative people, you just seem to be able to con-nect with their creativeness and inspirations.

Tokwa: Yes. Especially if that particular surrounding has the materials I need. Also, I don’t like working in noisy places. I get distrac-ted very easily.

As an artist what do you think is the influence your younger brother can ac-quire?

Tokwa: Well, I think he can see how serious I am with

my craft and how I practice everyday, that’s the only important thing I want to in-fluence anyone; karirin mo yang ginagawa mo.

Did you teach him to paint/draw or do you just let him do what he wants to do with his art?

Tokwa: No, I just let him do his shit. I only help him if I see he needs helping, which happens very sel-dom.

Where do you think your talent and inclination in the arts came from?

Jaycee: Siguro nakuha ko kay mama yung talent ko sa arts.

Tokwa: We come from a family of artists. We’ve been sorrounded with paintings and painters our whole life.

How will you describe the difference between your art and Jaycee’s?

Tokwa: Wala masyadong pinagkaiba, I guess. We work in the same studio, live in the same house, and are blood-related.

If you were to do a collabo-ration with your brother, what concept or theme do you think you’d be making?

Jaycee: Maybe a studio ghibli tribute.

Tokwa: Just go do what you want.

How will you describe Jay-cee’s art?

Tokwa: Parang sakin din lang, haha.

How will you describe Tok-wa’s art?

Jaycee: Magical!!

What do you love most about each other?

Jaycee: His quirkiness, and some of his dishes.

Tokwa: We are brothers.

What international art desti-nation do you most want to visit?

Jaycee: Saatchi Gallery and Serpentine Gallery in London and Japan.

Tokwa: Copenhagen, Ja-pan.

Who’s your favourite living artist?

Jaycee:Mall Licudine, Hi-kari Shimoda, Soey MilkTokwa: Too many. Really.

Where can we go to see more of your works?

Jaycee: Instagram: littles-paceboi , wala pa ako art account for tumblr pero soon i’ll make one, so, watch out!

Tokwa: tokwap.tumblr.com, my instagram: tokwap, Facebook, Vinyl On Vinyl Gallery, Lucina Home.

Do you have a gallery/ mu-seum visiting routine?

Jaycee: Minsan pumupunta ako sa Vinyl on Vinyl kapag may exhibit ang kuya ko or si mama.

Tokwa: Wala akong routine.

Most unforgettable experi-ence as an artist:

Jaycee:Date: April 6, 2013Place: Vinyl on Vinyl, Malu-gay St. Makati cityPerson: Tokwa’s first one-man-show exhibit.

Tokwa: When I passed my entrance test to UP Dili-man; “Ito na yun, legit na”.Date: April 2006Place: UP DilimanPerson: ~

How did it all start?

Michael: It was a personal project. I woke up one summer morning with Mick sitting beside me (being all creepy) and she brought up the idea of us collaborating. A few minutes later, we had our instruments set up inside my room and we started writing. The timing was perfect with me having just graduated from college and Mick finding herself in between jobs. Apart from having more free time than usual, we were both in this transitional period that allowed us togo off on a tangent.

Micaela: The idea was just, simply—and naively—to make a record. We didn’t even know how we would sell it or if anyone would buy it, it was really just the idea of making one that was appealing to me, the idea of making a collection of song-stories. We had been playing music since we were kids but never

really made anything public.

How did you come up with Outerhope?

Michael: It came from this book called Five Miles from Outer Hope by Nicola Barker. Outer Hope is a real place in England. One of the first tracks we wrote called “Five Miles” was alluded to that reference.

Micaela: It also stemmed from the idea of making music with just whateverwe had, which were two instruments, a keyboard and a guitar.

Who are your musical influences and how did they affect your music? Michael: We listen to so many different types of music that it’s difficult to tell which ones bled into the songs we’ve written. In a way, we’d rather not figure that out and just attempt to create something unaffected and

honest, which is probably the hardest thing to do given that we genuinely get inspired by a lot of artists.

Micaela: You absorb certain aspects of your favorites throughout time, or unknowingly select things to retain in your head, musically. I think I’ve always kind of stubbornly wanted to go my own way but the influences are there subconsciously... it’s hard to say what or how exactly.

Have you always seen yourself doing this kind of thing?

Michael: It was definitely something I romanticized in my head from a very young age but there was never a concrete plan to become a musician unlike taking clear steps towards finishing school or finding a job.

Micaela: Me too. I daydreamed about it all the time but never thought I would pursue it seriously. Growing up, I was pretty

satisfied with the fantasy.

What keeps you occupied these days?

Michael: I’m working on this mobile app for artists/galleries in Manila called Artifact which I’m hoping to release in the next few months.

Micaela: I’ve kept on working as an architect, and doing art exhibitions.

What musical instrument/s do you play?

Michael: Mostly guitar but trying to learn how to electronically produce beats and other sounds

Micaela: Piano / keyboards / synth

What can you say about the local independent music scene?

Michael: There are a lot of prolific songwriters out there who release music

mostly online but I’m pretty sure there are still a ton of talented musicians who just haven’t gotten around to starting their own thing or haven’t found the right avenues. We could definitely benefit from more independent labels, more producers, more show venues.

What is the difference between your music now & back in 2004? How has itchanged?

Michael: We’d like to think we’re continuously evolving with every record we release. Our tastes change and we find ourselves gravitating towards new artists every year. You can move forward with new music and still find a corner you can carve on your own.

Micaela: It’s been 10 years since our first release, and a lot of things have happened to us over time. In some ways we still see things a certain

way, because we already know at this age what kind of musicians we are and what feels true to our sensibilities. But there are always new things to explore. I’m always interested in chord building and layering, and the in-betweens, and different ways of building a song. The possibilities are endless, but whatmakes you sound like yourself are your choices. And I guess there are subtle variations in these choices over time; they become more refined but also surprising. We take time between releases, so what defines each one are the new discoveries that happen in between.

How does it feel playing in front of a crowd for the first time?

Michael: Always a terrifying experience for me...I’ve never been and probablynever will be comfortable enough playing on stage.

“the InFLuenCeS ARe theRe SuBConSCIouSLY... It’S hARd to

SAY WhAt oR hoW exACtLY.”

Micaela: Before Outerhope I hadn’t performed in years, not since highschool singing in a choir or singing the national anthem or something. I guess I’ve been on stage in the background playing keyboards or backing up someone. But it was the first time for me to play songs I had written. So yes, absolutely terrifying like a dream where you suddenly lost your clothes.

If your song ‘No end in sight’ is going to be used as a soundtrack for one film,What film would it be and why?

Michael: No End in Sight was actually written for Ang Nawawala by Marie Jamora...would definitely

love to score a film in the future...

Micaela: Would love to score a film too.

Where can we listen to your music?

outerhope.bandcamp.com

What are your future plans?

Michael: Trying to get in the groove of writing new material and hopefully release a record in the middle of next year…

Micaela: What he said!

What do you love most about each other?

Michael: I used to frequently stare into

space as a kid and that somehow carried over into adulthood...I get stuck in my head and Mick is usually the one that nudges me out of it. We would not have started writing songs together if she hadn’t literally dragged me out of bed.

Micaela: Today I fell sort of head-first in the snow (we are in Montreal visiting our brother) because I was being foolish and talking too much, and Mike picked me up by the armpits like a child. Haha. I guess that sums up our whole dynamic.

Under the linen sheets, the curvature of your cheek

bristles at the thought of my fingers. You – inverted like a question mark -

bend yourself unconsciouslywanting the press of my lips,

it’s wet to coat the skinthat is burning, breaking,

into shivers of desire –the sweet nectar of imagination.

But in reality, I haven’t even touched you,at least, not yet.

Love Letters To Yourself By Yourselfby Cenon Norial III & Mav Bernardo

The Smiths (The Smiths)

May be overrated for some, but this would account as one of the freakin great-est albums of all time. Not only does it stir political sentiments, this album is so meta-phoric (pun intended) that it oddly strikes our hearts whenever we hear it.

The XX (The XX)

Basic words. Subtle lyric at-tacks. Extraordinary impact. Tell me otherwise and I’d smack you down. Just kid-ding.

I think we can agree that Gibbard is a poet. Alright, fine. Probably because some of us, at some point in our lives, have been guilty of tagging phrases of their lyrics to our facebook/twitter accounts.

Alt J (An Awesome Wave)

Indirect messages em-bedded in every para-graph— Alt J lingers in your bloodstream, making you come back for more. They remind me of my knack for screamo/post-hardcore (i.e. Saosin) bands back then, only this time it is much fluid, mature and Grammy-worthy.

Michael Jackson (All,exceptFarewellMySummerLove&Xscape)

He certainly had his way to our hearts. Also an inde-scribable way to our danc-ing shoes. We may have a specific experience with him, we still end up singing and dancing along once we hear a familiar tune of his, which makes him an icon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYA review of Plum Blossom

By Jed Gregorio

Plum Blossom (Kwak Ji Kyoon, 2000) is about intro-ducing oneself to the class, bike rides, one’s first kiss, making out on a patch of grass, a girl’s soft lips, her skin like milk and her scent that’s only hers, masturbat-ing while drenched in sweat and the faint glow of the moonlight, trains coming (also, trains leaving?), bag-gage, reading a poem and responding with a poem, seeing a friend die in front of one’s eyes (fainting in front of him and falling into a comma all day), end-less falling snow, the blue

mountain, avoiding the first girl you’ve ever fucked, long and deep sleep, best friends, rowdy highschool-ers, roasting what’s most likely domesticated poultry on a camp fire on a cold night, Chilsung cider from a vending machine, being undressed by a girl, see-ing her undress, jumping out of a window, fucking in a greenhouse, being told to wait, leaving the girl you fucked, a traditional cer-emony one may or may not understand, not one’s first kiss but something

that felt like it, being told “Let’s just forget what hap-pened”, screaming, being told “Screw you and all your ambitions”, cutting, a girl’s room (a teddy bear on a stool, a shopping bag from what is most likely a recent purchase, lace curtains, yellow light), superstition or faith (“If someone sleeps on lilies they will die.”), suicide, waiting, the first snow, a medical checkup, one’s name being called out in a waiting room, how it’s so much more fun to talk to someone else than to talk to oneself, college, being sick of everyone (not necessarily everyone in college, but just everyone), dancing, there being only one person left (not on the dance floor, but elsewhere),

a Don McLean song, a Roberta Flack song, sum-mer clothes, a phone num-ber on one’s palm, the same places (all at once dim, bright, happy, sad), one’s hometown, more con-versations indoors soaked in sunlight, Werther and Goethe being dead (but we’re still alive), waterfalls and jumping from cliffs, daydreaming on a rainy day in an empty room, a library (not the empty room), tiny hills, not wanting to sleep alone, pink sheets, star-ing into space, fast food, being asked why one has to make money, surprise visits, being asked “Are you also hurt by your past love?”, tears over pastries, confessing “I’ve been float-ing like a ghost”, being

told “Go back and start over again”, a restaurant with pale blue walls (or green—or is that someplace else?) and harsh light, neon lights on an alleyway at night, run-ning, running backwards (being all right), blue nights, a birthday song, a confronta-tion, how someone who gets hurt always hurts another, congratulating her for getting into grad school, a mountain trail, the same waterfalls, the same cliff, jumping again (now alone), everything be-ing all right (like an incan-tation), ashes, dust, hope, nothing but a coward who cannot love, a telephone call, coming back.
