Dear Fellow Adhesion Society Members,

We have recovered substantially since the thin times of 2009. Our meeting in San Antonio saw 298 attendees and 42 participants of the short course. I personally very much enjoyed the plenary, keynotes, and oral/poster presentations. Thanks to Ali Dhinojwala (University of Akron) for putting together such an excellent program. One of the many highlights was the Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science (sponsored by 3M) symposium honoring Prof. Ken Shull (Northwestern University). Seeing the breadth of Ken’s impact on the field of adhesion was quite intriguing and rewarding. Also, we learned not to challenge him to a wrestling match any time soon.

San Antonio was a great host city for our meeting. The warm weather was a welcome break from winter. The Riverwalk provided handy access to a variety of restaurants and easy walking access to the rest of the city. Overall it seemed to be a good fit for our Society’s preference for walkable fun cities. The hotel amenities and staff were high quality and attentive, respectively. The area for the poster session felt a bit overcrowded for presenting the Peebles, Alan Gent, and Best Poster awards, but this is something we are already working on for future meetings.

It is my pleasure to announce that Prof. Tom McCarthy (University of Massachusetts Amherst) has been selected as the 2017 winner of the Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science (sponsored by 3M). He has graciously accepted this important recognition and we all really look forward to what will certainly be an interesting symposium in St. Petersburg as Tom’s influence in the adhesion community is broad, diverse, and international.

Next year’s meeting will be the Society’s 40th anniversary. This is certainly an accomplishment worth celebrating that will make this meeting one you won’t want to miss. I personally appreciate the valuable work from all the session chairs in past years programs and hope to see continued engagement in years to come. Prof. Kai-Tak Wan (Northeastern University) has kindly accepted our invitation to be the 2017 program chair and we are currently working on incorporating a celebration of our “40 years of adhesion science and technology” as well as peer into the future within the 2017 technical program. And speaking of the future, our Society will host the 6th World Congress on Adhesion and Related Phenomena (WCARP VI) in 2018. We are already starting to work on the planning as this is an international meeting of adhesion societies from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. More on this later. My dear 300+ members, we have exciting times to come in the next couple of years. I look forward to seeing you in St. Petersburg, for the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society. Thank you for responding to the brief survey we sent to you recently. We will continue requesting your input on several important issues.

F irst semester • 2016 edit ion

The Soft Adhesives division had another outstanding year with talks covering a wide range of topics. Our keynote speaker, Niels Holten-Andersen (MIT), gave a great talk on how bio-inspired metal coordination dynamics can effect soft matter mechanics. He showed how the viscoelastic proper-ties of these metallo-crosslinked gels can vary greatly based on the reaction environment. Also, our international reach was demonstrated with a talk from Naresh Datla (Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi). He spoke on the characterization and modeling of asymmetric tapes. Addition-ally, there were a couple of talks on characterization of soft materials covering the use of the blister contact test (BCT) and a quartz crystal microbal-ance (QCM). Finally, the session had a talk in which finite element analysis of a sandwiched elastomeric layer was used to understand demolding processes. We were satisfied by the great variety of topics that were gathered within a single session and it was truly gratifying to see how interest in soft adhesives spilled into many other sessions like Bio-In-spired, Dynamic Bonds and Electronics.

The Soft Adhesives division is already hard at work planning next year’s sessions. Suggested topics include flexible electronics, soft coatings, surface modifications, new synthesis schemes, characterization techniques and failure mode analysis. As you can see, no shortage of ideas! Be on the look-out for the call for papers in the coming months.

In division news, David Yarusso (3M) has stepped down from Chair into the position of immediate past chair. I would like to thank him for his years of service to the Division and to the Adhesion Society as a whole. David will continue providing input and guidance in the coming years. New to the Vice-Chair position is Dale Haner (DHM Adhesives) – Welcome Dale!

The 2016 Adhesion Society Annual Meeting was a great success for the Structural Adhesives Division with three focused structural adhesives sessions, as well as additional talks in modeling, electronics, characterization and chemistry across other sessions. Big thanks to Tony Kinloch (Imperial College London), Dave Dillard (Virginia Tech) and Ambrose Taylor (Imperial College London), for chairing the structural adhesive sessions.

I’d like to thank Alojz Ivankovic (University College Dublin) for his service as the 2014-2016 Structural Adhesives Division Chair. It is a great privilege to serve as your 2016-2017 Structural Ad-hesives Division Chair. Aaron Mann (Lord Corporation) has been elected as the 2016-2017 Structural Adhesives Division Vice-Chair.

It is very exciting to look forward to the 2017 Annual Meeting as the 40th anniversary for the Adhe-sion Society. During the Division meeting, there was strong interest to pull in speakers from the aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding industries, as well as focus sessions on durability and micromechanics of adhesives. Please let us know if you would be interested in chairing and organizing one of these sessions. Overall, we would like to continue our strong partnership between academia and industry, balancing the sessions from fundamentals through applied Adhesion Science and technology.

The 39th Annual Meeting of the Ad-hesion Society marked the formation of the new Bioadhesion Division. The topics of interest to the Division include, but are not limited to: biomedical adhesives; tissue, cell or biomolecular adhesion; identification and elucidation of natural adhesive phenomena and subsequent biomimicry or bio-inspired design; char-acterization of bioadhesion; development of bioadhesive testing methods; and bioadhesive modeling with theory or computer simulations. With the help of the Executive Committee, the Bioad-hesion Division Council finalized and passed the Division bylaws on March 18th. The Division Council consists of Alyssa Stark (Chair), Burak Aksak (Vice-Chair) and Bruce Lee (Symposium Chair). Each Council member brings a unique and valuable perspective to the Division.

While the Division is new, the topic of bioadhesion at the Annual Meet-ing is not. Generally every year there are between 15-30 talks on the topic. This year the Annual Meeting benefited from three full sessions on bioadhesion, each with an impressive and dynamic keynote. Keynote speakers included Bharat Bhushan (Ohio State University), W. Jon P. Barnes (University of Glasgow) and Phillip Messersmith (University of California, Berkeley). In an effort to sup-port the Society’s interest in the topic of bioadhesion, the Division Council and interested members met to plan session topics for the 2017 Annual Meeting. The Council and membership decided to focus session topics around the classical elements of bioadhesion: Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Biomedical. The Division Council would like to thank the continuing enthusiasm of its Members and support of the Society as a whole. We look forward to seeing you next year.

The 39th Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society was held February

21-24, 2016 at the Westin Hotel on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX. The meet-ing was attended by 298 participants. The meeting attendees represented universities, industrial partners, and gov-ernment institutions from 18 countries. There were nearly equal numbers of participants from academia and industry, and government employees comprised about 10% of the meeting attendees. A majority of those in attendance were from the United States (72%) while other large contingents hailed from Japan (7%), the United King-

dom (5%), Germany (4%), France (3%), and Korea (2%). Attendees also came from Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain, China, India, Israel, Mexico, Russia, Switzerland, and Turkey.

The Adhesion Society’s fiscal year ends on June 30. The financial summary presented at the 39th annual meeting in San Antonio covered the period from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. The Society’s income comes from meeting registrations, membership dues, corporate donations, and the short course. Total income for the 2015 fis-cal year was $166,532. Our expenses fall into three major categories: expens-es associated with the annual meeting, home office and administrative fees, and operation of the short course. Meeting expenses represent about 70% of the total and include: hotel charges, audio-visual, awards, and administration of the meeting. The society gave out almost $9000 in awards to presenters and students in 2015. Total expenses for the year were $140,212, which means the society had a net gain of $26,320 for the 2015 fiscal year. Meeting at-tendance at the 2015 meeting in Savannah was 229, and there were 40 participants in the short course. Historically when meeting attendance exceeds 200 the Society has a positive cash flow. With a meeting at-tendance of 298 and 42 in the short course for the 2016 meeting in San Antonio, preliminary indications are we will again have a strong positive cash balance for the year ending June 30, 2016. What this means to members is there will be no increase in registration fees or dues for the

upcoming meeting in 2017 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Society’s net worth as of June 30, 2015 is $152,256. $54,240 of this amount is held in reserve in an endowment and a money market account.

Chuck Shuster, Franklin InternationalChuck has worked at Franklin International, Inc. in Columbus Ohio for just over 33 years. He has spent the last twenty years as a Senior Research Associate in Franklin’s Core Technology Laboratory. In this position he works on strategic development projects for the various business units within Franklin. Franklin has a variety of adhesive platforms including water based vinyl and vinyl acrylic adhesives for wood assembly, water and solvent based acrylics and vinyl acrylics for construction adhesives and mastics, and water based acrylic PSA’S. Chuck’s introduction to polymers was in the Polymer Science Department of the University of Akron where he first encountered Dr. Allen Gent, one of the Society’s founders

David Yarusso (3M), presented the 2016 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science sponsored by 3M to Professor Kenneth Shull. The award was for his “fundamental insight into the balance between surface functionality, polymer physics, and mechanics in adhesion”. Prof. Shull is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University, where he has been a faculty member since 1993.

The 39th Annual Meeting began with a special session honoring Shull’s contributions with talks by Rong Long (University of Colorado Boulder) on “Time Dependent Mechanics of Polymers with Dynamic Bonds”, followed by Diethelm Johannsmann (Clausthal University of Technology) who discussed “Use of the Second Generation QCM in the Life Sciences”, Constantino Creton (ESPCI Paristech-Paris) on “Advances in Micromechanisms of Fracture of Filled Elastomers” and concluded with Michelle Seitz (DSM) on “Adhesion in overmolding Applications”.

A few of Shull’s most impactful publications include: “Deformation and failure modes of adhesively bonded elastic layers,” “JKR studies of acrylic elastomer adhesion to glassy poly-mer substrates”, “Deformation behavior of thin, compliant layers under tensile loading conditions,” and “Fingering instabilities of confined elastic layers in tension.” Undoubtedly, Prof. Shull has been one of the most productive and impactful adhesion scientists over the past two decades, with significant contributions in the understanding of the Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts (JKR) theory and contact mechanics of soft solids, the behavior of block copolymers at interfaces, the mechanics and fracture of polymer gels, as well as numerous other fundamental and applied topics.

Additionally, Prof. Shull is one of the distinguished members of our adhe-sion community. He has served in several roles for the Adhesion Society. Most recently, as President of the Society, he showed incredible leadership in rejuvenating the Society and the Annual Meeting.

2016 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science Sponsored by 3M Company

We are pleased to announce that the 2017 winner of the Adhesion Society Award for Excellence in Adhe-sion Science sponsored by 3M will be Professor Tom McCarty, Professor of Polymer Science and Engineering at University of Massachusetts Amherst, for his “For his pioneering research in elucidating mechanisms of surface chemistry and wetting of polymers”.

Tom has published more than 150 papers on modification of surfaces in which wetting mechanisms have

played an important part. Thirty of his papers have been cited more than 100 times, including one of the most highly cited papers in Langmuir (2000) entitled “Ultrahydrophobic Surfaces. Effects of Topography Length Scales on Wettability” cited more than 1200 times. Other impactful publications include: “Ultrahydrophobic and ultralyophobic surfaces: some comments and examples,” “Molecular monolayers and films”, “Ultrahydrophobic polymer surfaces prepared by simultaneous ablation of polypropylene and sputtering of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) using radio frequency plasma” and “The lotus effect explained: Two reasons why two length scales of topogra-phy are important”. Undoubtedly, Prof. McCarty has been one of the most productive and impactful surface scientists over the past three decades, with significant contributions in the understanding of wetting phenomena as well as numerous other fundamental and applied topics. His most recent interests include silicones, the surface chemistry of inorganic materials, and how to manipulate wetting to create new materials. “A Surprise from

1954: Siloxane Equilibration. Is a Simple, Robust, and Obvious Polymer Self-Healing Mechanism” proposed a new methodology of real-self heal-ing system design. This is a clear example on how Tom has been able to combine “wetting phenomena” and “silicone chemistry” to advance adhe-sion science and technology. He also attains such a high citation rate as he believes in public discussion of the implications of his and others work. His papers “How Cassie and Wenzel Were Wrong” and “Wetting 101” being prime examples.

Additionally, Prof. McCarty is one of the distinguished members of our adhesion community. He has made other numerous and deep contributions to adhesion science over the years and we look forward to the award ses-sion in his honor next year in St Petersburg, FL.

The Adhesion Society’s Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science, sponsored by 3M, is the Society’s premier award for outstanding achieve-ments in scientific research relating to adhesion. The criteria for winning this award include a scientific contribution that has significantly improved our understanding of the phenomenon of adhesion, or a contribution to the technology of adhesion or adhesives that has had significant impact on the adhesion/adhesives industry, and a world-wide recognition of that achieve-ment. The award has been given annually since 1987.

2017 Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science

This year we had seven recipients of the Peebles Award for Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science, sponsored by Henkel. The selection of awardees was based on abstracts submitted as contributions to the An-nual Meeting. These awardees received partial support to attend the meet-ing and present their papers at an oral symposium. These presentations formed the basis for choosing the winner of the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award sponsored by Henkel. In addition to this support, registration fees for the short course and the meeting were waived. The winners of the 2016 Peebles Awards were Jiangfen Sun (Northeastern Uni-versity), Leila Pashzanusi (Tulane University), Pierre Millereau (SIMM ESPCI), Helen Minsky (University of Pennsylvania), Dharamdeep Jain (University of Akron), Michael Imburgia (University of Massachusetts), and Chenglin Wu (University of Texas Austin).

Greg Schueneman (US Forest Service), Eric Silverberg (Henkel), and Anand Jagota (Lehigh University) presented Dharamdeep Jain (University of Akron) whose paper entitled “Effect of Humidity on the Adhesion of Black Widow Spider’s Gumfoot Silk” with the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award. Helen Minsky (University of Pennsylvania) was the runner-up with her paper entitled “Interfaces with Tunable and Enhanced Adhesion Compromised of Micro-scale Composite Fibrils”. Both were awarded a cash prize each in addition to the remuneration associated with being a Peebles Award winner. The winner’s prize included a $1,000 cash prize and a plaque, recognizing the winner. The runner up received a $500 cash prize and a plaque.

These two types of student awards, the Peebles Award for Graduate Student Research in Adhesion Science and the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award, are given every year. The Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award is sponsored by Henkel. Any student who is past the first year of graduate study enrolled in graduate school at the time of the annual meeting and who has not received a student award previously is eligible to compete.

2016 Peebles Awards and the Alan Gent Distinguished Student Paper Award Sponsored by Henkel

Scott Phillips (Penn State University) received the 2016 Adhesion Society Distinguished Paper Award for the paper “Signal-Induced Bonding and/or De-Bond-ing of Adhesives” presented at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Adhesion Society.

In his paper, Scott describes adhesives that debond rapidly and completely in response to specific applied signals that are orthogonal to chemical or physical signals encountered during normal use. Ultimately, his goal was to illustrate

That self-immolative polymers can be used to create stimuli-induced bonding and de-bonding of adhesives, where depolymerization (or self-

immolation) provides rapid, selective, amplified, and macroscopic responses to create new types of dynamic adhesives.

The 2016 Distinguished Paper Award was established in 1999 and was supported until 2005 by the H. B. Fuller Company as a tribute to Rolf Schubert, former Vice-President of Research and Development and Chief Technology Of-ficer for the H.B. Fuller Company. In 2006, National Starch and Chemical Com-pany began the support of this award. It is now sponsored by Henkel. One paper presented at the annual meeting of the Adhesion Society is selected each year to receive this award. The selection process is coordinated by the Vice President of the Adhesion Society. The selected paper has distinguished itself within this process as being outstanding in the categories of quality of research, impact on field, novelty and effectiveness of presentation.

Ali Dhinojwala (University of Akron) and Anand Jagota (Leigh University) presented the Best Poster Award, sponsored by Avery Denison, to Horiuchi Sun (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) for his paper entitled, “Study on Interface and Adhesion between Aluminum and Plastics using Electron Microscopy” and Justin Sirrine (Virginia Tech) for his paper entitled “3D-Printed Biodegradable Polyester Tissue Scaffolds for Cell Adhesion”.

Since 1977, The Adhesion Society has provided a forum to bring together in a single group all of the disciplines which relate to the science of adhesion. The Society fosters communication between researchers in mechanics, synthetic chemistry, surface science, polymer physics, materi-als science, and biology. With members drawn from industry and academia, it also encourages the exchange of problems and solutions between those who share common scientific interests. The poster session is an integral part of the Society’s annual meeting. With the short time available for each oral presentation, the poster session provides an excellent forum for more extended discussion of technical issues and interrelationships.

2016 Young Scientist Award The Adhesion Society Young Scientist Award recognizes a young scientist for conducting outstanding and fundamental research in adhesion science. The nomi-nee shall not have reached his/her 36th birthday prior to January 1, of the year in which the award is presented and he/she is expected to deliver an oral presentation at the annual meeting at which the award is conferred. Also, the nominee need not be a member of the Adhesion Society,

and nominees of any nationality are eligible.

Kai-Tak Wan, Northeastern UniversityDr. Kai-tak Wan currently serves as professor at Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. He earned his PhD in Chemi-cal Physics from University of Maryland at College Park. His research include mechanical and adhesion characterization of cell, tissues, liposomes and hydrogels, mechanical integrity of photovoltaic panels and cold spray coating, and non-Newtonian liquid droplet dynamics.
