Ambient AirCold & Wet Air

Theoretical principle Pre-coolers are evaporative coolers attached immediately upstream of the condenser coil. In operation, a controlled water flow is passed across a specially designed media. As air is drawn through the media, the water absorbs heat and evaporates. This lowers the temperature of the air, creating a cooler operating environment for the condenser. Typical cooling effect of the pre-cooler in the summer is up to DT 14 °C depending on the geographical location.

The ambient temperature of air used to dissipate heat from air cooled condensersgreatly impacts the performance of the underlying system. As the air temperature of this air rises, head pressures also rises. As a result, energy demand and usage increase while cooling capacity falls.

Evaporative cooler is designed to meet the demand from customers using refrigeration and air cooled condensers in a variety of applications. By adding a precooler, the air temperature through the condenser will be lower and in most cases better or equal performance can be reached with lower energy consumption.

How it worksThe condenser pre-cooler provides a proven, cost effective and predictable solution that requires little maintenance. By pre-cooling the air before it reaches the condenser coil, the condenser is able to reject more heat. This reduces head pressure and lowers compres-sion ratios. Electrical demand and usage are reduced. Cooling capacity is increased, particularly on design days when these benefits are most needed.

Of equal importance, the condenser pre-cooler is a sim-ple, measurable, predictable solution and it requires little maintenance. The pre-cooler media prevents dust and other particles from clogging the condenser fins and can guarantee consistent high efficiency for the entire life of the system.

The pre-cooler concept can be adapted to single and double coil (v-shape) dry coolers for vertical and hori-zontal installations. Pre-coolers can be installed on new units or retrofitted onto existing units to lower the elec-tricity consumption, boost the capacity and make themmore environmentally friendly. For every 1 °C reduction in temperature due to pre-cooling of the air gives a 2% increase in efficiency of the condenser

Applications: • Cold stores• Frezers• Hypermarkets• Food industry• Liquid chillers• Ice rings• Air conditioning• Data centers, servers

Graph showing the effect of input energy to the compressor in relation to the temperature of the airentering the system with or without a pre-cooler. The required compressor input power is lower when using a pre-cooler, which allows for direct savings in operating costs.

The condenser cooling capacity is greater when using a pre-cooler, which allows for savings in new equipment investment and/or extended utilization of the existing condenser system.
